On episode 17 of Red Lens Podcast, I sat down for a conversation with Oakland-based movement photographer Brooke Anderson. Brooke is a freelance photographer and photojournalist based on unceded Ohlone land in Oakland, California covering movements for social, economic, racial, and climate justice. Brooke first fell in love with photography while documenting the struggles of the low-wage workers (hotel housekeepers, port truck drivers, recycling workers) she was working with as a union and community organizer. She is a proud union member of the Pacific Media Workers Guild CWA 39521 AFL-CIO.

In the interview we talk about how she got into movement photography, the work she does in Oakland, and more!

Listen to episode 6 of Red Lens featuring my interview with David Bacon where he also talks about being part of the freelancers union among many other things.

Brooke mentions Yesica Prado, a Bay Area photographer who documents police sweeps of encampments. Follow her work on Instagram at @yesicas.lens or on Twitter @prado_reports.

The intro/outro song in this episode is ‘Zapatista garage punk instrumental’ by Joshua Hudes. You can find it here.
