In this episode, I sit down with my good friend Shepard Merritt to discuss his experience with the New Independent Fundamentalist Baptist (NIFB) Church as well as with the Church's insistence on using only the King James Version of the Bible. It's not merely that the church teaches you should use the KJV, but it also teaches that other versions are demonic and attempting to deceive people with false teachings. Shepard describes how he got pulled in by the church's teachings on Faith Alone, Scripture Alone, and Grace Alone, but how the doctrine of Scripture Alone was twisted to really mean King James Version Alone, a gross misrepresentation of one of the five solas of the Reformation. Also discussed are the red flags that started to show up in his study of NIFB teachings that led to him to start questioning the church. One of the biggest red flags he noticed was how reprobation and imprecatory prayers (as well as KJV Only radicalism) were taught with equal importance to the Gospel, signifying how out of focus some of the leaders of the NIFB church can be. We want to be clear that this is not meant to criticize anyone within the NIFB church personally, but simply to bring to light some of the errors of NIFB and KJV Only teachings so that all of us can grow stronger in the faith together as we lift each other in humble obedience to Jesus Christ. This video hopes to express a James 3:17-18 (NASB 1995, my emphasis) attitude, "17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace." We hope to push Christians to be peaceable and open to reason so we can all grow in love, gentleness, mercy, and good fruits.
