When Obedience Comes Before Understanding

📖 Luke 2:22–24 (NIV)

“When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord’), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: ‘a pair of doves or two young pigeons.’”

Explanation

Luke highlights how carefully Joseph and Mary followed the Law of the Lord. Even though their child was the Son of God, they did not bypass obedience. Jesus entered the world not as someone above God’s law, but as someone who willingly stepped into it. From the very beginning of His life, Jesus was identified with faithful obedience.

This moment reminds us that God’s salvation story unfolds not only through miracles, but through ordinary faithfulness. The long-awaited Messiah did not begin His mission with power and spectacle, but with humble submission to God’s will.

Application

Many of us want clarity before obedience. We want to understand everything before we take a step of faith. But Joseph and Mary obeyed simply because God had spoken. Following Jesus often means trusting God even when the full picture is not yet clear.

Ask yourself: Is there an area in my life where God is calling me to obey, even if I don’t fully understand why? Obedience opens the door for God’s greater purposes to unfold.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to obey You even when I do not see the whole plan. Help me trust that Your ways are good and Your promises sure. Shape my heart to walk faithfully with You, just as Jesus did. Amen.
