For the longest time, whenever someone called my child “shy,” I felt the need to jump in with excuses or apologies. “She just woke up” … “She’s like that with everyone.” But deep down, it never sat right with me. Why was I apologizing for my child simply taking her time to warm up?
In this solo episode of Squiggly Motherhood, I share how I moved from feeling awkward and apologetic to becoming an advocate for my kids. I talk about:
* Why the label “shy” can have negative effects on a child’s self-image.
* How I reframe those moments and affirm my child in real time.
* The importance of teaching kids about consent, comfort, and confidence.
* Practical ways adults can connect with children without pushing them to “perform.”
This is an honest look at the power of words and how they shape our children’s inner scripts.
