Ship Goes Missing on Lake Superior | Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
On November 10th 1975, the largest ship on the Great Lakes sailed into one of the worst storms Lake Superior had ever seen. The ship attempted to make it to shore in Whitefish Bay but ended up vanishing without a trace, never reaching its destination. The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, considered the pride of American inland shipping, was lost along with twenty-nine crew members. At the time nobody knew what happened to the ship as it had simply disappeared. It was eventually found a few days later at the bottom of Lake Superior split in two parts. What happened to the boat and why did it sink the night of November 10th? To understand this event and the tragic loss of life we must first look at the life of the ship, its final voyage, and the fury of the storm that claimed her.
