and Matthew Macfadyen star in the Netflix four-part limited series Death by Lightning, which tells the true story of the assassination of U.S. President James A. Garfield.

Michael Shannon plays the role of President James A. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States. The series portrays him as an amiable and reform-minded leader who was unexpectedly chosen as the Republican presidential nominee in 1880.
Matthew Macfadyen plays Charles J. Guiteau, Garfield's delusional admirer who becomes his assassin after feeling betrayed when his applications for a government position are repeatedly rejected. Macfadyen's performance has been widely praised for capturing Guiteau's "controlled madness" and "slimy desperation".
