Why Grace Comes Before Peace | Philippians 1:1–2 | EP. 61

There are moments when peace feels just out of reach—not because we don’t love the Lord, but because our hearts are trying to steady themselves in the wrong places. This daily Christian devotional and prayer reflects on why Scripture does not rush us toward calm feelings, but gently brings us back to where the Christian life truly begins: the grace of God in Christ.

Today we continue our verse-by-verse journey through the book of Philippians by slowing down at Paul’s opening words to the church. Written from prison, these verses do not carry anxiety or strain. Instead, they speak with quiet confidence rooted in Christ. Paul addresses believers who belong to Jesus, reminding them of who they are before telling them anything about what to do.

This devotional explores why Paul always speaks grace before peace—not as a polite greeting, but as a theological order that steadies the soul. Grace comes first because the Christian life begins with what God gives, not what we achieve. Peace follows because grace has already settled our standing with God through Jesus Christ. When this order is reversed, the heart grows anxious. When it is restored, peace no longer needs to be chased—it is received.

If you’ve been striving for peace through effort, control, or spiritual performance, this message will help re-center your heart on the grace that gives rise to true rest.
