The main theory behind endometriosis is retrograde menstruation, where endometrial tissue flows back into the pelvis instead of out of the body. Common symptoms include severe cramping and feeling unwell before and during menstrual cycles. Estrogen, produced by the body and body fat, can contribute to the growth of endometriosis. Endometriosis can attach to various areas in the body, such as the bladder, bowel, and ovaries, leading to infertility. Treatment options include surgical management, medications such as Lupron, and medical management to increase the chances of getting pregnant. Early diagnosis and treatment by a specialized healthcare provider are crucial, and patients should advocate for themselves and ask questions about different treatment options.
