Brittney Griner has been detained abroad since February. Cherelle Griner, Brittney's wife was set to speak to her wife after four months of no contact for the couple's fourth wedding anniversary. However, Cherelle Griner told the Associated Press after making 11 calls, she was not able to get through. Officials say that even though the call had been scheduled for two weeks, Cherelle Griner was given a phone line that is only manned Monday through Friday and no one was available to take the call over the weekend.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s top spokesman Dmitry Peskov disputes the State Department’s position that Griner is a Russian hostage. "hundreds and hundreds of Russian citizens that were sentenced for carrying hashish, said Peskov. Peskov also said Griner does not deserve special treatment because she is a foreign citizen.
Earlier this month, U.S. citizen Marc Fogel, who works as a teacher at the Anglo-American School in the Russian capital of Moscow, received a 14-year prison term in Russia for illegal drug trafficking after he was caught entering the country with medical marijuana he says was prescribed to him after back surgery.
Needless to say, things do not look good for Brittney Griner.
