Gray discusses this passage in Ephesians where Paul sets forth a view of submission and family that is radically different from how the average person in the Ephesian church would have understood it. He turns our understanding of family on its head as he redefines submission in terms of the sacrificial life and death of Jesus rather than the patriarchal hierarchy based on power and control of the Roman world. It is as shocking and challenging today as it was in Paul’s day.
