The Wikipedia definition of a portrait is 125 words long. As you read it, it weirdly seems to get narrower rather than explaining multiple aspects of what portraiture means. So we take some time this week to share our thoughts and ideas on portraiture, what it means to us, to the subjects and to the viewer.
We share some of our own portraits which you can see here in our TFOP album.
We also answer the critical question of whether or not a photo of a sleeping dog can be a portrait? Or does it have to be a cat?
Picks of the week:
Tyler Stalman: How I Connect Real Footage With AI Transitions
Not Boring Camera
Lens Culture Black & White Photography Awards 2025

There’s a lot of commentary on social media at the moment about modern tools making us too comfortable to create and (of course) algorithms sundering our culture. But it’s a multi-dimensional thing for sure and each of those dimensions you could pick one side or the other.
So what happened to suffering for our art? What happened to 10,000hours? Are we all destined to morph into super-saturated influencers in sponsored bikinis? Or should we go back to pouring chemicals onto glass plates?
Let’s debate!
