Susan Smith, the killer mom who drowned her two young boys in a lake in 1994, is up for parole in November 2024. THE INTERVIEW ROOM WITH CHRIS MCDONOUGH looks back at the case that shocked the nation when Susan Smith confessed to killing her sons, Michael, 3, and Alex, 14 months. CHRIS TAKES YOU ON THE ACTUAL DRIVE SMITH TOOK FROM HER HOUSE IN UNION, SOUTH CAROLINA, TO JOHN D. LONG LAKE, WHERE SHE DROWNED HER TODDLERS, PROVIDING INSIGHT ONLY A SEASONED HOMICIDE DETECTIVE CAN SHARE. YOU WILL NOT WANT TO MISS THIS! On Oct. 25, 1994, Susan Smith, 23, told police she was carjacked by a black male who took her two young sons inside the car. Her story rocked her small hometown of Union, South Carolina, and the country. For days, she appeared on TV news with her estranged husband, David Smith, crying and pleading for her boys' return. After nine days, Smith confessed to police that she drove her car, with her boys strapped in their car seats inside, into John D. Long Lake. Smith was convicted of two counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison - at Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, South Carolina - with a possibility of parole after 30 years. She is up for parole on Nov. 4, 2024.
