🎙️ Jew & Gentile Podcast Notes
The One Thankful Leper — Luke 17:11–19
The Story
Jesus is traveling toward Jerusalem when ten lepers—physically suffering, socially exiled, spiritually cut off—stand at a distance and cry out:
“Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
Jesus responds with compassion. He tells them:
“Go, show yourselves to the priests.”
As they obey, all ten are healed on the way. But only one comes back.
A Samaritan — the outsider, the one least expected — returns to Jesus, falls at His feet, praises God with a loud voice, and gives thanks.
Jesus asks the piercing question:
“Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?”
And to the one thankful man:
“Your faith has made you well.”
Reflection — Where Are the Nine?
God pours out blessings every single day.
But:
Do we notice them?
Do we acknowledge them?
Do we expect them?
Do we assume we’re owed them?
Do we ignore the Giver because we’re excited to use the gift?
Were the nine bad people? Probably not. Were they thrilled to be healed? Absolutely.
But their focus was immediately on getting back to normal life.
The Samaritan, though— He paused. He returned. He moved toward God, not just toward blessing.
Thanksgiving Application
Thanksgiving is full of:
Family
Friends
Fellowship
Football
Food
Fun
But how many people pause to remember the One who gives all of it?
How many actually return to the Source of blessing?
Jesus notices gratitude. He also notices when gratitude is missing.
Yiddish Word of the Day
“grateful” — dankbar (דאַנקבאַר)
Expressions:
a dank — thanks
a sheynem dank — thank you very much
a greisen dank — a big thank you
A perfect tie-in to the thankful Samaritan.
