JOURNAL CLUB: Quality of Life with Dysphagia & the Medical SLP


“I only eat because I have to – to live.”  That’s the headline of the research report we’re going to dig into during this month’s Journal Club. Jessica Hill is going to lead the discussion on your role as a medical SLP and the quality of life for people with dysphagia. Yes, thickened liquids aren’t desirable and coughing during meals is uncomfortable, but what are the emotions your patients are navigating? What become their greatest fears? Let’s talk about it.

In this journal club, learners will:

Identify potential emotional ramifications resulting from development of dysphagia
Describe the role of the speech-language pathologist (SLP) in daily management of dysphagia.
Describe perceived impacts of dysphagia on those experiencing it

 
Time Ordered Agenda:

 Minutes 0-5: Introduction of topic, articles being covered, and presenters
Minutes 5-15: An overview of dysphagia impacts on quality of life as it relates to the medical SLP
Minutes 15-58: Educational dialogue regarding the role of the medical SLP in dysphagia management and impacts on patient’s along with Q and A
Minutes 58-60: Conclusionary information







Jessica Hill, MS CCC-SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist who practices in Phoenix, Arizona. She has worked in a variety of settings including several trach/vent hospitals and rehabilitation centers, acute care hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. She is passionate about dysphagia, high-quality patient care, and advocating for the needs of her patients.

Jessica Lasky is a medical Speech-Language Pathologist that specializes in dysphagia and the adult and geriatric populations. Jessica has worked in nearly every setting possible from outpatient neuro rehabilitation, stroke, and trauma 1 hospitals, acute rehab facilities, and SNFs.
