Part 2
5 years later chenab river (a branch of river jhelum) somewhere near chicken neck region, jammu tawi(later that night…...)
The sound was a common one- that of the bombs exchanged in the indo-pak region near the chicken neck. Although they were alarming, although they could be heard from miles away, the shukla family didn't pay any attention and started to warm up for bed . Suddenly a powerful light passed out around the shuklas’ neighbourhood. With the lights gone out, All of them were in a state of fear. They all stood still on the floor. Suddenly a knock came from the door and a voice of the in-charge night duty officer confirmed that it was just a search for a suspect . He then assured that they were here to protect us and requested us to sleep.
The very next morning something really strange happened. It was 10 am in the morning. Rio was in his school and the other family members were at home. Suddenly, the sky turned black within 2 minutes. The sky looked as if it was 10 pm at night . A Thunderstorm whipped up, with ice pellets breaking the glass of classroom windows. News channels were flashing headlines of a Peshawar school attack: it was a warning sign for the schools around the Indo-Pak Border. The next days we were given training on how to react if a terrorist attack happens. It consisted of 3 phases:
1. The ringing of an emergency bell.
2. then the arrangement of desks around the doors and in which position to lie down for minimum damage.
3. understanding the mechanism of how to use guns, bombs and weapons for defensive purposes, if they had to do it. Also they were trained about how a tank and a jet worked and how to operate them. Believe it or not, Rio and his classmates also did run a tank on their own!
However other than all these things there was a very good side of unity where all the people in the headquarters were like a single family, even though all were from different states across India. During that time, Rio's mother was out of station for almost 3 to 4 years, out of the 6 years which Rio spent in Jammu and Kashmir. But Thankfully, his Teacher and his Neighbours filled that gap for him..
we will be back with our third part of herald of good times
