The Rock Geeks
Phil Greenwood and Julian Gallagher
21 episodes

The Rock Geeks are two northern blokes and lifelong best mates, Phil and Julian, taking a monthly deep dive into the albums that have shaped their worlds and expanded their minds, exploring who created them and how they were made in the finest detail possible.

Each episode will take you into the recording studio and not only show you the gear that was used by the band and the studio engineers but also show you how the gear was used to produce their masterworks. Phil and Julian also discuss each album track by track, exchanging views and opinions on the musical and lyrical content, while exploring the social and cultural landscape into which the albums were released; and if the artwork is often your favourite part of an album, then you are not alone! If you've ever wondered what the controls on Angus Young's Marshall amp were set to, who painted the cover art for Weezer's Pinkerton or how many fascist dictators are referenced in Manic Street Preacher's The Holy Bible then The Rock Geeks can help.

The Rock Geeks Episode 3 Part 1 - Master Of Puppets by Metallica
Metallica's Master Of Puppets is possibly the thrash metal genre's most defining album and although Julian took to it like a heavy metal duck to water, Phil was a little more reticent, mainly because his dad introduced him to it. Not cool. On part one of this episode of The Rock Geeks Phil and Julian discuss Making Love and Music at Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen's Sweet Silence Studios, talk about James Hetfield's phenomenal songwriting and arranging chops and find out what the recording of Master Of Puppets had in common with the recording of The Chipmunks.
