An aquarium with more fish than the biological system can accommodate will require some routine maintenance. Waste is produced in greater quantity than the substrate can take it in. Without a vigorous food web this detritus simply builds up. Eventually it will develop a strong algae content and can begin impacting plant leaves ability to breath. In this video Father Fish shows some simple methods for removing this extra mulm. Observing the tank carefully help one learn when water changes are needed. As water discolors it does so for precisely the same reason as detritus buildup. A 25% water change when the water becomes like tea will bring it back to crystal clear condition.
