Prof. David J. Weiss is widely regarded as the father of computerized adaptive testing (CAT), leading much of the seminal research in the 1970s. That research is one of the early applications of AI and machine learning in assessment, and also of the use of computers. Listen to his story of how he got interested in psychometrics, measurement, and computers, how the early research started, and what has kept him researching to this day.
Prof. Weiss is the longtime director of the Psychometrics PhD program at the University of Minnesota, founder of the journal Applied Psychological Measurement, cofounder of the International Association for Computerized Adaptive Testing, and co-founder of Insurance Testing Corporation.
