In 1895, D.D. Palmer adjusted Harvey Lillard in Davenport,Iowa — restoring his hearing and launching the chiropractic movement. That one act ignited a legacy of natural healing, nervous system restoration, and self-empowered health. They Went to Jail for AdjustinEarly chiropractors were arrested and jailed for “practicing medicine without a license.” In the first30 years, over 12,000 chiropractors faced 15,000 rosecutions — not for harm, but for healing. They stood firm so natural health could stand free. Today there are ~70,000 chiropractors in the U.S., serving 35 million Americans eachyear. Eighteen chiropractic colleges, thousands of clinics, and a growing number of women doctors are shaping the future of functional, drug-free care.In the 1960s, the AMA’s Committee on Quackery worked to eliminate chiropractic. Chiropractors fought back — and won. In Wilk v. AMA (1990), a federal court ruled the AMA guilty of illegal restraint of trade, protecting our right to practice and collaborate in modern health care. Chiropractic care is safe,evidence-based, and recommended by leading guidelines for back pain and mobility. Serious complications are extremely rare, and research shows no higher stroke risk than a primary-care visit. “If D.D. Palmer hadn’t given that first adjustment, we might still be waiting for permission to heal ourselves.”
