It seems like every time I pick up a book on art and artists, art periods and art movements are discussed. And though I understand both a way to categorize the art or artist, I don’t see a reason that it either helps in appreciating the work or understanding the artist. I feel like the art work itself tells me enough about the artist, and the years and where the artist lived tells me something about the culture at the time.
So what is the importance of the art period and art movement in regards learning or understanding or in appreciation of art?
Art history is divided into periods and movements. The difference between the two is time and intent. While art periods are usually based on historical eras, art movements are decided by artists as a collective.
