Manosphere in the mirror: researching the marketing of misogyny
What's actually happening in the manosphere? How is it affecting children and young people? And how might we respond? In this episode of Tomorrow is the Question, the Fully Human podcast, Jono Baggaley chats to Professor Harriet Over and Dr David Zendle from the University of York and Fully Human's own Dr Elly Hanson to explore their deep research into these questions. “When it comes to the manosphere, this naming of it might hide a lot of complexity. We talk about it through a word that is just the most perfect harmonious shape, a unity. Actually, we don’t know if it’s a unity at all." Dr David Zendle In this episode, we unpack one of the most challenging aspects of contemporary online culture — the marketing of misogyny by online influencers. Online misogyny and the manosphere have been a considerable focus in conversations about online harms against children and young people. And misogynistic influencers and messages are now hugely prevalent in many young people’s online worlds. But it can feel a bit ill defined, a sort of amorphous threat to those of us not regularly exposed to the videos, podcasts and narratives coming from these influencers. So I was delighted to have a Fully Human conversation with three people doing deep research on what’s actually happening: Professor Harriet Over and Dr David Zendle from the University of York, and Fully Human’s own Dr Elly Hanson. It’s a fascinating conversation in which they unpack the ecosystem of influencers and the interaction of adolescent development, gender norms, false narratives and profit-seeking algorithms — all of which seem to be causing very real harm. We explore the limits of our current understanding of the problem and new and exciting methods for getting to the bottom of what’s actually happening online.
