The Places Where We Go podcast: Rich Detail for DIY Travel
It's vicarious travel at its best with Art & Julie Dobrucki, hosts of "The Places Where We Go" podcast which, as per the title, brings you along on their journeys through Europe and the United States.   https://www.theplaceswherewego.com/   Their story has been an evolution from only fairly recently beginning to travel in earnest to exploring the options of documenting their experiences: first creating little daily video journals for their own records, then blogging, followed by podcasting and YouTube videos now too. It's another great example of video complementing audio, and vice-versa.   The foundation of the show is great research and detail, in essence repurposing the work and preparation that went into planning the trip in the first place by then describing how it unfolded, and having lots of practical info at their fingertips.   In this, it is a podcast made for DIY travel: independent travellers who enjoy the planning and research process, piecing together a unique and individual trip and keeping space for spontaneity and adaptation. And they are happily inspired by other travellers to help them build their trips, to then pass that info and experience on to their own listeners.   Highlights include exploring destinations in Wales, England and Ireland, particularly off-the-beaten-path villages and parks that have a particular draw. We also visit Rome, Florence, Venice and Ferrara as part of their Italian trip, and more recently a mini-series on multiple cities in western Poland, where they trace some family lineage.   When not in Europe, Julie & Art are exploring the national parks of the United States, switching to RV travel in their Airstream trailer. This includes Montana, Northern California, the stunning parks of Utah and more. They take us to Alaska, hopping off their cruise to make it all the way up to Denali National Park.   As for motivation, in our conversation today we chat about how surviving a major health scare put life and travel in perspective, and led to them embracing opportunities and adventures. It's a valuable reminder for all of us to live life to the fullest.     Action Advice   9:45 - On filling a void in podcasting by creating one themselves. 11:50 - On getting used to the audio format, and learning to not over-prepare. 13:38 - Using podcast narration to add to video clips for YouTube. 19:19 - Don't worry about talking about an older trip on your podcast. Just get the information up to date, the stories are still relevant! 21:50 - On enjoying the moment and summarizing your travels when you get home. 24:25 - Art & Julie's remarkable consistency, and the decision that allowed them to achieve that. 28:28 - Learning the remote recording process and format, and how to get it all set up. 35:10 - How do they know how many episodes to do for each destination?     Travel Podcast the World   https://www.travelpodcasttheworld.com https://twitter.com/TedFlyTed https://www.instagram.com/travel_podcast_theworld/ Submit Your Podcast form  Suggest a Podcast form     Guest Links   The Places Where We Go website   on YouTube   on Twitter   on Instagram     References   Episode 78: The start of the Poland mini-series   Episode 55: Playing an organ in Helena, Montana   Episode 10: Denver NHL Bucket List trip     People   RV Miles podcast   The RV Atlas podcast     Places   Poland   Helena, MT
