Instead of watching Michael Keaton in a rubber suit (The Flash), we're watching Michael Keaton in a rubber suit (Birdman). While the film barely passes the Bechdel test, it does succeed as a meditation on ego, artistry, and also in making us re-evaluate the entire purpose of our show.
Daniel introduces an inter-generational interpretation of the film via the three journalists, as well as the three main characters.
We ponder as to whether Iñárritu ACTUALLY hates superhero movies or not, and we defend them as if he does.
While the film appears to criticize the romanticization of male ego and artistry, Bo explains, the film deeply fails when viewed through a feminist lens, and therefore makes no attempt to counterbalance the phallus-measuring contest which dominates the story.
In a sudden epiphany, Bo reinterprets the surreal ending of the film, and Daniel challenges.
Daniel concludes with the thesis of our show; "We're here to celebrate great stories... Our podcast is a defense of the hero archetype."
