At the forefront of these concerns is a demand described by Raskin and Garcia as a "blatantly illegal" attempt to secure $230 million in taxpayer money. This sum, they report, is being sought by former President Trump from the Department of Justice as compensation for previous federal investigations, including the probe into alleged Russian interference and the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case. In an October 23rd, 2025 letter, Raskin, the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, and Garcia, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, urged Trump to abandon this plan, labeling it an "outrageous shake down" and "theft" from the American people.
