#12 - The Isolation of Aviation
‘The Isolation Of Aviation’   🛫 Uncovering The Aviation Mindset - Episode 12 With CFA & Concierge Bree Sheehan 🛬   Summary My good Ozzie buddy Brie joins me for another fascinating conversation about living a healthy lifestyle in and out of the aviation environment. We explore many topics aside from the potential to feel isolated in our aviation roles as we travel worldwide.  Bree and I became mates when we worked for Nissan North America, endlessly exploring this topic at 45,000 and over many enjoyable worldwide adventures.  She always makes me smile with her humour, energy, and interest in all she puts her mind to, including the human beings around her. Bree is committed to personal development and always impresses me with her enthusiasm for finding the next chapter in her life.  Her antipodean thirst for travel and adventure has taken her worldwide, working in various fields, including airlines and private/corporate aviation. She studied for a degree whilst working full-time and continues to add to her self-education CV. With her enviable communication skills, she has now branched out from her role as a corporate flight attendant to provide concierge services for global flight departments. As I always maintain in our niche world of private aviation, Bree’s CFA role provides the linchpin between the demanding passengers in the back of the jet and the demanding flight deck crew in the front. Emotional and social intelligence is vital in this role, which Bree has in abundance.    Key Takeaways ✈ Building relationships in a male-dominated industry can be challenging, but conflict resolution and emotional intelligence are key to creating better relationships. ✈ Learning to say no and prioritise personal time is essential for maintaining mental and emotional well-being. ✈ Complaining and negativity can have a detrimental effect on personal and professional relationships. ✈ Maintaining personal health through proper sleep, nutrition, and self-care is crucial in a high-pressure industry like aviation. ✈ Raising awareness of mental health and well-being is essential in the aviation industry, and there is a need for more conversations and support in this area. ✈ Gender equality and emotional intelligence are essential for creating a more inclusive and supportive environment in aviation. Feeling isolated in the aviation industry can be challenging, especially when lacking diversity and inclusion. ✈ Isolation can harm mental health, and it is crucial to address this issue in the industry. ✈ Effective leadership and emotional intelligence are crucial for creating a supportive work environment. ✈ There is a need for better training and development opportunities for aviation professionals and mentoring programs.   Chapters 00:00 Introduction and Background 01:36 Challenges of Building Relationships 03:30 Managing Expectations and Saying No 05:27 Balancing Personal Time and Socialising 06:27 The Difficulty of Saying No 08:18 Managing Personal Time on the Road 09:16 The Challenge of Managing Crew Dynamics 10:10 The Complexities of Crew Relationships 11:04 The Importance of Self-Interest and Personal Development 12:01 The Negative Effects of Complaining and Negativity 13:21 Maintaining Personal Health and Well-being 15:13 Dealing with Exhaustion and Fatigue 16:31 The Importance of Health and Discipline 20:34 The Impact of Diet on Mental and Emotional Health 22:29 The Need for Gender Equality and Emotional Intelligence in Aviation 24:08 Challenges Faced by Female Flight Attendants 25:04 Challenging Behavior and Feeling Isolated 27:01 Isolation and Mental Health 29:00 Isolation and Personal Choices 30:28 Choosing Social Connections 34:40 Leadership and Emotional Intelligence 38:11 Improving Leadership and Training 43:01 Nurturing Human Potential 45:50 Open Communication and Safety 47:13 The Need for Dialogue   Bree can be found at the following links: Linkedin Instagram Facebook   I hope you enjoy the podcast.
