As we begin 2023, we felt that we were ready to discuss the topic of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. This is a highly sensitive topic that has grown in awareness over the last few years with the increased use of filters, social media, AI and other face altering tools. Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a mental health condition in which you fixate on a perceived flaw in your appearance.
This was an eye-opening episode with a lot of moving parts. We focused first on what BDD is, how it is defined clinically and how we, at ANEU Med Spa, have taken steps to screen our patients for BDD. Patients with BDD can very easily be taken advantage of in this industry so we try to have those tough conversations to ensure we are doing what is ethically right for our patients. At the same time, we want to avoid the pitfalls of completely unrealistic expectations these patients can have which could only be achieved through digital editing. We move into positive self-talk, how the internet has impacted us individually and how we see our industry impacting the future generations. As BDD and other mental health diagnoses continue to surface, we want to educate our patients on what BDD is and why it is important to be aware of it.
