#26 The Climate Crisis: A Growing Threat to Global Peace and Security
In today’s episode, we will be discussing how climate change impacts peace, security, and conflict. As climate-related events like droughts, floods, and resource scarcity intensify, they are not only threatening livelihoods but also fueling tensions, displacement, and instability across the globe. We explore how climate change creates new security challenges while worsening existing political and socio-economic tensions. We also examine how it affects water and food security, contributes to migration, and increases the risk of both domestic and transboundary conflicts. We also turn to Europe, where extreme weather events are increasingly testing the resilience of societies. Finally, we discuss the political barriers to effective climate action, the role of climate issues in peacebuilding, and what urgent steps leaders must take to ensure climate change becomes a force for cooperation rather than conflict.
In this episode, Lamija Softic, host of Utrikesnytt, sits down with Professor Ashok Swain, Professor and Head of the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University, and the UNESCO Chair on International Water Cooperation. The episode has been edited by Simone Hornell, podcast editor at Utrikesnytt.
