The Hague The Netherlands De Duitser Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen trad op jonge leeftijd, slechts 16 jaar oud, in dienst bij het Nederlandse leger. Hoewel hij afkomstig was uit een respectabele familie met koninklijke connecties, had zijn vader het grootste deel van zijn financiën besteed aan het ondersteunen van de Nederlandse onafhankelijkheidsoorlog tegen Spanje. Voor Maurits, het dertiende kind van zijn vader, bleef er daardoor weinig over.
