SEPTEMBER IS SUICIDE AWARENESS MONTH
The best way to prevent as well as support those who experience depression and anxiety is to make it a point to become informed and have awareness of the true effects of depression and anxiety and how it impacts all aspects of an individuals life.
Now let’s take a look at the alarming statistics on the true suicide rate that you may not be aware of.
Since suicide attempts are “self-reported” it’s difficult to understand the magnitude of how common it truly is. From 2008 to 2019, a 12 month reporting period suicide attempts rose to 564 in every 100,000 adults from 481.
Suicide attempts in the United States showed a “substantial and alarming increase” over the last decade, but one number remained the same, a new study has found: Year in and year out, about 40 percent of people who had recently tried suicide said they were not receiving mental health services. The mental health sector is in a crisis state currently in the United States. Several Psychiatric Hospitals have closed, individuals are waiting in the ER for days even up to a week waiting for a bed to be available in order to be transported. Psychiatrists and therapists are booked solid leaving those in need on waiting lists for 2-6 months or more. Not to mention, not all clinicians take all forms of insurance and many are considered private pay only and don’t even accept insurance.
The age-adjusted suicide rate in 2020 was 13.48 per 100,000 individuals. The rate of suicide is highest in middle-aged white men. In 2020, men died by suicide 3.88x more than women. On average, there are 130 suicides per day.
The largest area in mental illness that is not spoke about nor understood is how TRAUMA truly has an effect on an individual's mind and body! If left unprocessed for the trauma survivor, it increases the risk of depression, anxiety and addiction.
