Rat Race: The Ecological Phenomenon Behind Mizoram's Famine Cycles

In northeast India, a rare ecological phenomenon occurs every 50 years, triggering the sudden blossoming of tropical bamboo species and the explosion of the rat population. This phenomenon, called Mautam, causes a terrifying spiral of crop devastation and food shortages, leading to famine and violent insurgency. The last time it happened was in 2008, and which will likely occur again between 2025-2026. In this episode, we'll explore the historical connection between rats, famines, and the Mizo National Front and how they're all tied to bamboo blossoms. We'll also talk about the measures authorities take to deal with this crisis, including supplying free rat poison to farmers and paying them to make bamboo traps. And yes, some people eat those rats too. Join us ni today's episode of 'what's the backstory?' as we delve into the fascinating world of Rat-pocalypse and Bamboo Boom in northeast India.
