Photographer Al Bergstein on covering the Alexian Brothers Novitiate Standoff
On January 1st, 1975, a group of 48 armed members of the Menominee Warrior Society stormed into a stone mansion known as the Alexian Brothers Novitiate, occupying the property in an attempted land grab. For over a month, the group would standoff with the National Guard, while also dealing with deteriorating conditions and vigilante members of the surrounding community. Inside the novitiate, photographer Al Bergstein was granted an opportunity to cover the whole standoff, which included a visit from actor Marlon Brando. WTMJ's Adam Roberts sits down with Bergstein to learn more about that often forgotten chapter of Wisconsin history.
