A Dalit Happy? - A talk delivered to Janmat Magazine - ft Arunesh X - Jan 2022
Questions I tried to answer: // 1- We read your poem 'A Dalit Happy' which entails a very important message. Can you please elaborate on the notions that the society expects you to meet as a Dalit? 2- What do you think about the reservation system in India, how effective has it been thus far in order to bring backward classes at par with others? 3- There's a blatant outcry on the irrelevance of the reservation system these days. What do you think of it? 4- Do you ever feel, as a Dalit that your identity is caged? Even when we approached you at first, it was primarily because of the injustice you faced due to discrimination. But you are a poet, a philosopher, a teacher and much more than what your caste denotes. What do you have to say about this? 5- How do you think we can make educational spaces more inclusive and safe? 6- What is an identity according to you? What place does an individual's 'caste' have in that identity? Since you are also a Dalit activist, we see that this aspect of your identity has brought you a sense of purpose to agitate for your rights and to raise your voice against the unjust system. 7- Lastly, we'd like you to describe yourself in a few lines. Who are you? Let us not delve on caste distinction anymore. What message would you like to give to the people who face similar issues related to the caste and identity clash and to those who are not sensitive enough toward these things and end up triggering others? 8- After the long, draining battle against a prominent university, where do you think the Indian legal system stands?
