Ever since Hippocrates made medicine a professional field, healthcare has carried a strong sense of paternalism.
What illness do you have? How should it be treated? What should you do?—the doctor decided it all.
But in the 21st century, things have begun to shift.
We now talk about patient-centered care, seeing health not just through the medical lens, but from the physical, psychological, spiritual, and social perspectives of the patient—creating value for their overall well-being.
That’s why ‘holistic care’ has become such a key phrase in hospital accreditation—the four wholes, the five wholes, the “whole-person” idea everywhere.
And today, as patient rights and awareness continue to grow, we’ve moved beyond paternalism toward patient autonomy—‘My life, my choice.’
In Taiwan, while existing Medical Care Act articles 63, 64, and 81 address informed consent, they don’t fully reflect patient autonomy.
That’s why the Hospice Palliative Care Act (2000) and later the Patient Right to Autonomy Act (2019) were introduced—to formally safeguard patients’ rights to know, choose, and decide.
But here’s the real question—how can we make sure that when we’re sick or even unconscious, our medical wishes are still respected?
How can we avoid being hooked up to machines or tubes we never wanted?
Well, that’s where Advance Care Planning (ACP) comes in.
It allows competent adults, while they’re still clear-minded, to sit down with medical professionals and discuss what kind of care they would want—or not want—at the end of life.
So in this episode, we’re sharing some real stories and honest reflections about ACP—no dares, just truths.
Let’s talk about what it really means to plan ahead for the care we deserve.
