Hey—if you’ve ever worked with volunteer management, you’ve probably wondered:
Why do most organizations assign volunteer coordination to social workers?
The guidelines only say ‘designated personnel,’ right? Nobody ever said it must be social workers… so why does it always end up on our desks?”
“Then there are those evaluation committees—you know, the ones who insist that volunteer services must show ‘innovative practices.’
What does that even mean?
Can someone who wrote that requirement please come out and explain it to us? (Yes, I’m annoyed… pass me a cigarette.)”
“Since the Volunteer Service Act came into effect in 2001, it’s only been amended three times.
Only three!
Compared to other laws, are they saying volunteer services don’t need to evolve with society?
Really?”
“And because Taiwan is aging—and rapidly—government officials keep telling us to ‘develop new strategies for senior volunteers.’
Uhh… we’re exhausted.
At this rate, every volunteer team is going to turn into a day-care center for older adults.”
“And let’s not forget those KPIs—
‘The volunteer team needs to increase in number every year.’
Increase… why? For what?
Are volunteers supposed to replace labor?
Or are we squeezing every drop of ‘surplus value’ out of citizens just because they’re willing to serve?
Is volunteerism really sustainable manpower reutilization,
or is it just… ongoing exploitation?
Honestly, it makes us sweat—on the inside.”
