Why do people choose to become social workers?
Can you even make a living as one?
Isn’t it… really, really hard?”
Friends and family love to ask us:
“What exactly does a social worker do?”
“Wait, you get paid?”
“Wow, you must be SUCH a kind person!”
And then, whenever a shocking tragedy hits the news—
from last year’s K.K. case to the recent 8-year-old drowning incident in Dayuan—
the public conversation almost always turns to:
“Where were the social workers?
Why didn’t they do something?
What did they fail to do?”
And at those moments, every social worker in Taiwan is silently screaming:
“Why is this suddenly our fault?!”
If you’re a young social work student,
maybe you’re scared of entering a field that feels hostile and misunderstood—
maybe you’re even thinking about switching majors.
If you’re about to graduate,
you might be terrified of the future,
wondering whether you can survive on a social worker’s salary,
or whether this profession is simply too heavy for one human heart to carry.
And if you’re already in the field…
you might be in that stage where disappointment outweighs hope,
where every morning feels like marching into a battlefield you’re exhausted from fighting in,
where the heartbreak, frustrations, and injustices are piling up.

Why do we stay?
Why do we keep choosing this path—
this “no-return road” of social work?
There’s an old Taiwanese lyric:
“Why is your path as a medical social worker so bright and easy,
while mine feels cold and full of rain?”
The truth is…
before we ever looked bright or steady,
before we ever smiled with confidence—
we walked through the same storms,
the same struggles,
the same soaking rain.
