VIP Ep. L100: Dictionary.com Crowns "67" as 2025's Most Influential Term

Highlights

  • Dictionary.com named "67" its 2025 Word of the Year, a Gen Alpha slang term with no concrete meaning.
  • The term originated from rapper Skrilla's song and viral NBA clips, spreading rapidly since October 2024.
  • "67" functions as an interjection and identity marker, showcasing Gen Alpha's linguistic creativity.

Dictionary.com announced Wednesday that "67" — pronounced "six seven," not sixty-seven — has been chosen as its 2025 Word of the Year. Director of lexicography Steve Johnson noticed the term's pervasiveness across social media and schools nationwide. The turning point came when his friend, a middle school teacher, messaged him urgently: "Do not make six seven word of the year." Johnson immediately recognized that if educators were pleading against it, the term had achieved genuine cultural penetration. For parents and teachers dealing with students randomly shouting "67" throughout the day, this recognition feels bittersweet.

What makes "67" unprecedented is its deliberate ambiguity. Unlike conventional words with established definitions, "67" resists concrete meaning. Some interpret it as "so-so" or "maybe this, maybe that," occasionally accompanied by palms facing up and moving alternately. However, Dictionary.com classifies it as "brainrot slang" — intentionally nonsensical and playfully absurd. Johnson explains that it functions primarily as an interjection, something people simply shout without expecting semantic clarity. This makes "67" the first word of the year in decades to prioritize sound over substance.

The term's journey began with rapper Skrilla's song "Doot Doot (6 7)" in late 2024. TikTok and Instagram users quickly paired the song with basketball footage, particularly clips featuring NBA player LaMelo Ball, who stands 6 feet 7 inches tall. By October 2024, the meme had gained unstoppable momentum among young audiences, eventually appearing in "South Park" episodes. The combination of catchy audio, athletic visuals, and absurdist humor proved irresistible to Gen Alpha content creators.

Beyond entertainment, "67" serves as a generational identity marker. Johnson describes it as an in-group signal, a way for Gen Alpha to assert, "I'm part of this generation." While older generations might dismiss it as meaningless noise, linguists recognize it as Gen Alpha flexing their linguistic creativity. The term's success demonstrates how digital natives reshape communication through deliberate absurdity and shared cultural references. Johnson remains curious about its longevity, noting that predicting slang's trajectory requires time — perhaps six or seven months.

Topic: About Germany - Big cats' droppings help German circus weather coronavirus crisis

One creature's droppings can be another's treasure, as Germany's Krone Circus is finding out during the new coronavirus pandemic.

Home to 26 lions and tigers, the circus has found an unusual side income and raised money despite coronavirus-related restrictions: selling jars of big cats' droppings.

Customers have told lion tamer Martin Lacey they swear by the stuff.

"I am told it keeps cats away from the garden, and since then we have learned that also it keeps the animals away from the car, where they eat all the electric cables," Lacey said.

The jars sell for 5 euros each, with some of the money going towards a charity to improve the living conditions of captive animals.

And if you don't have a garden pest problem but find your neighbours pesky? – "Put some in the garden, and the neighbours will go away," Lacey chuckles.

Next Article Topic: About Europe - Sausage vending machines booming in Germany

Hungry Germans craving a sausage in the dead of night are increasingly turning to vending machines for their bratwurst, bockwurst, and so on. The machines are booming outside German cities where shops are less likely to stay open for long hours, according to a survey by the German Press Agency.

Some butchers' vending machines sell three or four types of sausages, and punnets of accompanying potato salad – so customers can buy all they need for a traditional hearty German feast anytime.

There are over 570,000 vending machines in Germany, but despite their popularity they are expected to complement, rather than replace traditional shops.

"Vending machines will play a complementary role in brick-and-mortar retailing," Wolfgang Kampmeier of the Berlin-Brandenburg trade association told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper.

Next Article Topic: Slow music: Chord change in Germany of 639-year organ piece

Hundreds of fans attended a special kind of musical happening on Sept. 5 at a church in Germany: a chord change in an organ piece that is supposed to last for an entirety of 639 years. The performance of the ORGAN2/ASLSP, or As Slow As Possible, composition began in September 2001 at the St. Burchardi Church in the eastern town of Halberstadt and is supposed to end in 2640 if all goes well.

The music piece by the American composer John Cage is played on a special organ inside the medieval church. The last sound has been the same one for the last six years and 11 months, and therefore the chord change on Saturday last week was a big event among fans of the John Cage Organ Project.

A chord change means that the sound of the organ pipes changes either because new sounds are added or existing sounds end. On Sept. 5, two new organ pipes were added. Organizers say the performance is "one of the slowest realizations of an organ musical piece."

A compressor in the basement creates energy to blow air into the organ to create a continuous sound. When a chord change happens, it's done manually. On Sept. 5, soprano singer Johanna Vargas and organist Julian Lembke changed the chord. The new sound reminded some listeners of the metallic buzz inside a big ship's engine room.

The next chord change is planned for Feb. 5, 2022, the German news agency DPA reported. When the piece officially started on Sept. 5, 2001, it began without any sound. It was only on Feb. 5, 2003, the day of the first chord change, that the first organ pipe chords could actually be heard inside the church.

Cage was born in Los Angeles in 1912 and died in New York in 1992. He's known not only as a composer, but also as a music theorist, artist and philosopher.

The St. Burchardi church has a long, checkered history. It was built around 1050, and was used for more than 600 years as a Cistercian monastery. It was partially destroyed during the Thirty Years' War, later rebuilt, at some point secularized and over the centuries also served as a barn, a distillery and a pigsty, the John Cage Organ Project said on its website.

Chord changes usually draw several thousand visitors to Halberstadt, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of guests allowed into the church was limited this year.

1. Gemini (Google)

  • Gemini =
Gemini

John

2. Claude (Anthropic/Amazon)

Claude

3. ChatGPT (OpenAI)

  • GPT = Generative Pre-trained Transformer

5. Copilot (Microsoft)
❌ 錯誤: Copilot、Copiloto(受日文影響) ✅ 正確: Copilot

Copiloto"!

6. Perplexity
❌ 錯誤: Perpecity(L不見了)、其他各種亂念 ✅ 正確: Perplexity

7. Grok (xAI/Elon Musk)
Grok

Gro+k = Grok

John

8. Monica

Mon

  • Threads → 脆
  • Gemini → The Mini
  • Monica →

Copilot → Copiloto
Claude → Cloud

  • ChatGPT → GTP

Do you remember your 20s? This week on English Cafe, John and Shimin talk about 2000s jazz-pop singer Jamie Cullum and the classic song "20-something."

The lyrics of "20-something" are very straightforward and real, expressing the confusion of people in their twenties: Was spending all that money on school really worth it? Should I travel to find myself, or jump straight into my career? Should I move back home to pay off student loans? Are love and work really the answers? John and Shimin also share their own experiences in their twenties, whether it was studying hard for the pharmacist licensing exam, or earning multiple degrees by age 21 yet feeling uncertain about life's direction and needing to slow down and reflect.

VIP Ep. L096: Super Typhoon Strikes Philippines, Million Evacuate

Highlights

  • Typhoon Fung-wong hit Aurora province with winds reaching 185 km/h, forcing over 900,000 residents to evacuate.
  • The storm arrived days after Typhoon Kalmaegi killed nearly 200 people and suspended rescue operations nationwide.
  • Scientists warn that warming oceans could make future storms more intense for vulnerable nations like the Philippines.

Typhoon Fung-wong slammed into the Philippines' Aurora province on Sunday evening as a super typhoon, bringing destructive winds and life-threatening conditions to the country's most populous island. The storm's eye hit Luzon at 9:10 PM local time with sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 230 kilometers per hour. By early Monday morning, the typhoon had weakened slightly but remained dangerous as it traveled westward across the island, prompting meteorological services to issue urgent warnings about storm surges and flooding.

The disaster comes merely days after Typhoon Kalmaegi tore through the same regions, killing over 200 people and leaving more than 100 missing. Heavy rainfall from that earlier storm sent torrents of mud cascading down hillsides into residential neighborhoods, with some poorer communities completely obliterated by fast-moving flash floods. Civil aviation authorities closed multiple airports and cancelled nearly 300 flights as Fung-wong approached. Two fatalities have been confirmed so far, including a drowning victim and a woman trapped under debris in Catbalogan City.

At evacuation shelters across central Aurora, families huddled together with young children too small to remember Typhoon Haiyan, which claimed over 6,000 lives in 2013. Jessa Zurbano, sheltering at a sports center with her family, expressed deep worry about the storm's strength and her children's safety. Another evacuee, Patry Azul, explained that her wooden house near the coastline felt unsafe during such extreme weather. Hotel worker Hagunoy stayed behind at his beachside workplace as long as possible, watching staff secure gates and tie windows with rope before eventually fleeing on his motorbike.

The Philippines faces approximately 20 tropical cyclones annually due to its location near Pacific storm formation zones, making it one of the world's most vulnerable nations to such disasters. While climate change may not increase the overall number of typhoons globally, scientists emphasize that warmer oceans create conditions for more intense storms. The combination of rising sea temperatures and a warmer atmosphere can generate higher wind speeds, heavier rainfall, and greater coastal flooding risks, posing escalating threats to countries like the Philippines that already endure frequent devastating weather events.

Topic: Are African Artifacts Safer in Europe?

Is Africa's cultural heritage better off in Europe or in Africa?

That is the question at the heart of a yearslong debate that has gripped museums in Europe, where many officials say they support the idea of repatriating artifacts, but worry that African museums cannot compare to state-of-the-art facilities in Britain, France or Germany.

That debate has been given new life in recent months after an investigation by the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper found that many of the artifacts that will be on display in the Humboldt Forum, a huge new museum under construction in a rebuilt Berlin palace, had for years been stored in less-than-ideal conditions. The report featured searing depictions of flooded storage rooms and depots choked with toxic dust.

The Humboldt Forum will bring together the collections of several existing museums in the city under one roof, but reports in German news media have focused on the storage facilities of the Ethnological Museum of Berlin, which will be the Forum's largest single contributor.

Officials at the museum, which closed to the public in 2017 to prepare for the move to its new home, have responded with what observers call an unusual degree of openness.

They have denied some of the reports, in particular the claim of flooded storerooms, but said their depots were beset with problems common to museums across Germany. Those included outdated facilities, a lack of staff members, and a sense of disarray that dates to moments of crisis in German history.

Despite all that, they steadfastly rejected that those conditions might call into question their stewardship of the artifacts, many of which were collected during the era of European imperialism.

Sindika Dokolo, a Congolese art collector who runs a foundation that has organized the return of artifacts to Congo and Angola, said it was true that "a whole generation" of museum professionals, like curators and conservationists, needed to be trained "in most of the African countries." But while that new generation was being trained, he said, it is European museums' responsibility to make sure African audiences had access to the artifacts in their possession.

It is up to them to create the conditions that would let African artifacts "play their role where they need to be right now, in Africa," he added.

Next Article Topic: Neanderthal genes found for first time in African populations

African populations have been revealed to share Neanderthal ancestry for the first time, in findings that add a new twist to the tale of ancient humans and our closest known relatives.

Previously it was believed that only non-African populations carried Neanderthal genes due to interbreeding that took place after a major human migration out of Africa and across the globe about 60,000 years ago. The latest findings suggest human and Neanderthal lineages are more closely intertwined than once thought and point to far earlier interbreeding events, about 200,000 years ago.

"Our results show this history was much more interesting and there were many waves of dispersal out of Africa, some of which led to admixture between modern humans and Neanderthals that we see in the genomes of all living individuals today," said Joshua Akey, an evolutionary biologist at Princeton University and senior author of the research.

The study suggests living Europeans and Asians carry about 1 percent Neanderthal DNA, compared with on average 0.3 percent for those of African ancestry. Akey and colleagues believe that this Neanderthal DNA arrived in Africa with ancient Europeans whose ancestors — over many generations — had left Africa, met and mated with Neanderthals and then returned to Africa and mixed with local populations.

"An important aspect of our study is that it highlights humans, and hominins, were moving in and out of Africa for hundreds of thousands of years and occasionally admixing," said Akey. "These back-to-Africa migrations, largely from ancestors of contemporary Europeans, carried Neanderthal sequences with them, and through admixture, contributed to the Neanderthal ancestry we detect in African individuals today."

The increasingly fine-grained details of our ancestors' migration patterns and intimate encounters with other types of human are coming into focus thanks to the advent of sophisticated computational genetics techniques. These statistical methods allow scientists to line up the Neanderthal genome side by side with that of ancient modern humans and DNA from different living populations and figure out whether the different lineages have been steadily diverging or whether there are blips where large chunks of DNA were exchanged at certain time points.

The latest comparison highlights previously unnoticed ancient human genes in the Neanderthal genome, apparently acquired from interbreeding events dating to about 200,000 years ago. This suggests an early group of humans travelled from Africa to Europe or Asia, where they encountered Neanderthal populations and left a faint imprint on their genome that could still be detected more than 100,000 years later.

The paper also highlights the relative lack of genetics research in African populations, despite modern humans having first emerged on the continent and despite African populations today being more diverse genetically than the inhabitants of the rest of the world combined. "To more fully understand human genomic variation and human evolutionary history, it is imperative to comprehensively sample individuals from all regions of the world, and Africa remains one of the most understudied regions," said Akey.

It is not known whether all African populations, some of whose roots stretch into the deep past, share this Neanderthal heritage. KhoeSan (bushmen) and Mbuti (central African pygmy) populations, for instance, appear to have split off from other groups more than 100,000 years ago. The findings are published in the journal Cell.

Next Article Topic: About Africa - Mysterious Mineral from Earth's Mantle Discovered in South African Diamond

A single grain of rock lodged in a diamond contains a never-before-found mineral. And that newfound substance could reveal unusual chemical reactions unfolding in the depths of the mantle, the layer of Earth that lies between the planet's crust and outer core. The entire mantle is about 1,802 miles (2,900 km) thick.

Scientists unearthed the mineral from a volcanic site in South Africa known as the Koffiefontein pipe. Shining diamonds speckle the dark, igneous rock that lines the pipe, and the diamonds themselves contain tiny bits of other minerals from hundreds of miles beneath Earth's surface. Within one of these sparkling stones, scientists found a dark green, opaque mineral that they estimated was forged about 105 miles (170 kilometers) underground.

Scientists noted that, for a mantle mineral, goldschmidtite has a peculiar chemical composition.

A man walked into a Nairobi car yard and paid for a luxury Mercedes with a mountain of 1,000 shilling ($9 euros) banknotes, desperate to offload cash that would be worthless after September 30.

With the deadline looming before the Central Bank of Kenya bans all old edition 1,000 shilling notes, big fish with their fortunes stashed in cash are under pressure.

A new print of the 1,000 shilling banknote, the largest denomination, was rolled out in June. The operation is aimed at flushing out dirty money being hoarded by tax evaders, crooked businessmen and criminal groups. The central bank in June said there were roughly 218 million 1,000 shilling notes in circulation.

People are getting creative, devising schemes to quickly unload small amounts of their cash. For example, a liquor shop owner gets 500,000 shillings every day to bank together with his daily sales, as a deal with a wealthy guy, and get between five and 10 percent in return.

(Passive Learning):

Lecture → 5%
Reading → 10%
Audio/Visual → 20%
Demonstration → 30%

(Active Learning):

Discussion Group → 50%
Practice by Doing → 75%
Teaching Others → 90%

(One-Way)

🔄 Input vs Output:

1. Reading Out Loud + Shadowing(必做!)
Turns your passive learning into active learning!」

(Muscle Memory)
(Sentence Construction)

  • Where - 在哪裡?
  • Why -

John老師說:「如果你用英文思考這些問題,you are already practicing it! You are already actively reflecting on the article!」

  • Checking List:
  • Categorizing List:

Ep. L092: Samsung Enters XR Market Race

Highlights

  • Samsung launched Galaxy XR at $1,800, half the price of Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro headset.
  • The device features 29 million pixels and weighs just 545 grams, lighter than Vision Pro.
  • Running Android XR, it integrates Google Maps, YouTube, and Gemini AI for immersive experiences.

Samsung unveiled its Galaxy XR headset at $1,800, directly challenging Apple's $3,500 Vision Pro. The pricing positions Samsung between Meta's $499 Quest 3 and Apple's premium offering. Available now in the United States and South Korea, Galaxy XR runs on Google's Android XR operating system with Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. Early buyers receive an Explorer Pack including 12 months of Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, and NBA League Pass access. The launch marks Samsung's ambitious entry into extended reality technology.

Galaxy XR delivers impressive specifications that surpass Apple in key areas. Its micro OLED displays feature 29 million pixels with 4,032 pixels per inch (PPI), exceeding Vision Pro's 3,386 PPI for sharper visuals. At 545 grams, it's lighter than Apple's 600-gram headset, with weight distributed ergonomically to reduce facial pressure. However, Apple maintains advantages with Vision Pro's 120Hz refresh rate versus Galaxy XR's 90Hz, and its M5 computer chip provides substantially more processing power than mobile-oriented processors.

Samsung's partnership with Google brings distinctive software capabilities. Users interact with Gemini AI to navigate immersive 3D Google Maps, discover YouTube content conversationally, and convert photos into three-dimensional experiences. Pass-through mode allows hand gestures to circle real-world objects for instant information. The headset supports multitasking with multiple apps at customizable sizes. Major streaming services including Crunchyroll, HBO Max, and Peacock have optimized their platforms for Android XR.

Galaxy XR's launch intensifies competition in the mixed reality market currently dominated by Meta's Quest series. While Meta captures mainstream audiences with affordability and Apple established a premium niche, Samsung fills the middle ground with advanced specifications at accessible pricing. These headsets face similar battery limitations, providing roughly two hours of general use with external packs. As Android XR becomes available to other manufacturers, Samsung's early partnership with Google may prove crucial in capturing market share and defining standards for next-generation extended reality experiences.

Topic: Calgary Zoo returning pandas to China due to bamboo barriers

The Calgary Zoo will be returning two giant pandas on loan from China because a scarcity of flights due to COVID-19 has caused problems with getting enough bamboo to feed them. Er Shun and Da Mao arrived in Canada in 2014 as part of a 10-year agreement between Canada and China. After spending five years at the Toronto Zoo, the two adult giant pandas arrived at the Calgary Zoo in March 2018 with cubs Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue.

The zoo's president, Clement Lanthier, said last week the facility spent months trying to overcome transportation barriers in acquiring fresh bamboo and decided it's best for the animals to be in China, where their main food source is abundant.

"It's about the animals. At the end of the day, we cannot pretend that we care for animals if we don't take those tough decisions," Lanthier said. "We believe the best and safest place for Er Shun and Da Mao to be during these challenging and unprecedented times is where bamboo is abundant and easy to access." Lanthier said the zoo had contingency plans for a steady supply of fresh bamboo, but limits on flights from China was the first problem. Transporting more from California added even more frustrations. "Every week, every 10 days there is more and more problem moving bamboo to Calgary. This risk is unacceptable. We don't feel comfortable at all that we can impose that risk on the health and the welfare of the pandas." According to Lanthier, the animals didn't like some kinds of bamboo and other supplies that arrived were past their expiry point.

Giant pandas have unique nutritional requirements and 99 percent of their diet is made up of fresh bamboo. Each adult consumes about 40kg daily. Lanthier said the news came as a bit of a shock to the Chinese government. In other locations where pandas are exhibited — such as France, Spain and parts of Asia — bamboo can be grown locally.

He said the pandas had been one of the biggest draws at the Calgary Zoo, but the decision wasn't one about business. "It's based on animal welfare. I cannot imagine if one day, two days, three days in a row I am unable to provide the bamboo. That would be catastrophic." There's no date for when the pandas will return home. Lanthier doesn't want the Canadian and Chinese governments to delay things. "We need the federal government and the Chinese government to expedite the permit process, so we can move them back to where this risk of not getting their next meal will be managed differently," he said.

Next Article Topic: Justin Trudeau's Official Home: Unfit for a Leader or Anyone Else

At Canada's official residence for its prime minister, security cameras keep silent watch over the fences, visitors pass through gates that can block truck bombs and a detail of uniformed Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers patrol day and night.

But the prime minister himself is unlikely to be found inside.

When Justin Trudeau became prime minister three years ago, he took a pass on moving his family into the official residence at 24 Sussex Drive, built in 1868 by an American-born lumber baron. Decades of neglect had turned Canada's top political address into its most famous home renovation project.

But no recent prime ministers have been willing to commit the tens of millions of dollars it would take to make the stone house habitable again. It would look as if they were spending money on themselves, a politically toxic step in Canada.

Trudeau, 46, who lived at 24 Sussex as a child when his father was prime minister, is no exception.

"No prime minister wants to spend a penny of taxpayer dollars on upkeeping that house," Trudeau told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. earlier this year.

There was little criticism of Trudeau's decision to live with his wife and their three children in Rideau Cottage, a relatively modest, two-story red brick house behind Rideau Hall, the house of Canada's governor general who fulfills Queen Elizabeth II's duties as head of state.

That is because the official residence's deteriorating condition is no secret to Canadians, with government reports documenting its decline for more than a decade.

Those reports make grim reading for anyone but a contractor hoping to land the renovation job.

"The building systems at 24 Sussex have reached the point of imminent or actual failure," one report, by the National Capital Commission, the federal agency that manages official residences, found this year. It rated the residence's condition as "critical."

Its wiring, according to the report, has become a fire hazard; the boiler is obsolete; the exterior stonework is crumbling; and the plumbing blocks up regularly.

The building by a pool added by Trudeau's father is "rotting," the report said, and air-conditioning comes from inefficient window units that could make it easy for intruders to slip in. Many of those windows need replacement anyway. Everywhere there is asbestos.

On top of all that, the house is ill-suited for official functions. Among the house's many deficiencies, "the dining room is at the same time too large for a family and too small for state dinners," the report said.

The current cost estimate to deal with everything (excluding security upgrades): 38 million Canadian dollars ($28.7 million).

Nearly 800 doctors and medical residents in the Canadian province of Quebec have signed a letter protesting against plans to raise their pay, arguing that the funds would be better spent on other areas of the province's beleaguered healthcare system.

"We, Quebec doctors, are asking that the salary increases granted to physicians be cancelled and that the resources of the system be better distributed for the good of healthcare workers."

It was drafted late last month by Médecins québécois pour le régime public, a group of doctors and medical students who support public healthcare.

The letter says recent pay raises negotiated by their professional associations as "shocking", given the "draconian cuts" that have left nurses, orderlies and others overworked and underpaid, as well as led to a widespread lack of services for patients.

The Quebec government recently announced increases of 1.4% and around 1.8% for specialists and general practitioners respectively, while recent data suggests that the average specialist in Quebec makes C$403,500 annually, while family physicians make C$255,000.

Learning by doing, learning by failing fast!

(Feynman Technique)!

Cosmic Orange!

Apple just announced the latest iPhone 17 last month, and after watching the launch event, Teachers John and Cariya's first reaction was: "Tim, try harder if you want our money!" This week on English Cafe, John and Cariya discuss whether this new phone, touted as "Awe Dropping" (jaw-dropping), is really worth upgrading to.

Cariya bought an iPhone 16 during last year's Singles' Day sale and originally felt no need to upgrade, but after talking it through, discovered that the all-day battery life and 20-minute to 50% fast charging features are somewhat tempting. John shares an interesting perspective: he switched to a white iPhone last year, but no one even noticed he changed phones, so if he's going to buy one this time, he definitely has to choose that super bright Cosmic Orange!

Ep. L088: Halloween's New Reality: Gummies Replace Chocolate

Highlights

  • Chocolate's Halloween market share dropped from 52% to 44% as fruity gummies gain popularity among younger consumers.
  • Global cocoa prices quadrupled between 2023-2025 due to West African drought, making chocolate far more expensive.
  • Non-chocolate candy sales surged 4.9% in 2024 while chocolate sales grew only 0.4%.

This Halloween, trick-or-treaters might notice something different in their candy bags: fewer chocolate bars and more gummy bears, fruity chews, and freeze-dried treats. The shift reflects a major transformation in the Halloween candy market. According to market research from Circana, chocolate accounted for just 44% of Halloween candy sales in the weeks leading up to October 2025, down from 52% the previous year. This trend particularly appeals to younger consumers, who have been gravitating toward the diverse shapes, colors, and flavors that non-chocolate candies offer.

Behind this sweet revolution lies a bitter reality: a global cocoa crisis. Between January 2023 and January 2025, cocoa prices skyrocketed more than fourfold, reaching $10,710 per metric ton—an all-time high. The culprit? Severe drought and climate change devastated cocoa harvests in West Africa, which produces 70% of the world's cocoa supply. This shortage hit consumers' wallets hard. In the 12 weeks before October 5, chocolate Halloween candy averaged $8.02 per pound, while non-chocolate alternatives cost just $5.77 per pound—a price gap that made many shoppers reconsider their purchasing decisions.

The impact on consumer behavior has been dramatic. Despite these challenges, Americans spent $7.4 billion on Halloween candy in 2024, representing 18% of all annual candy sales. However, the distribution shifted notably: non-chocolate candy sales surged 4.9% while chocolate sales crawled forward at just 0.4%. Major manufacturers responded swiftly. Mars Inc. began rolling out Halloween products as early as July 5, planning two years ahead for each season. Hershey maintained its market leadership with a 40.8% share, though even its chocolate-heavy lineup faced growing competition from gummy and fruity alternatives.

This transformation extends beyond individual trick-or-treat bags to broader market dynamics. Statistics Canada reported confectionery prices in Newfoundland and Labrador jumped 10.4% year-over-year, with similar increases nationwide. Retailers noted chocolate remaining 10-20% more expensive even after initial spikes. Yet Halloween spirit endures. Approximately 61% of consumers still purchased candy for trick-or-treaters, while 45% bought treats for themselves. Industry experts emphasize that Halloween celebrates more than candy—it's about costumes, community, and traditions. As families adapt to higher prices and evolving preferences, the holiday continues thriving, just with a more colorful, chewy twist.
