“Pet Loss at Christmas: Grief, Love & Finding Support”

The holidays can be one of the hardest times to grieve the loss of a beloved pet. The joy all around can feel heavy when the one you love most is missing.

This is my second Christmas without Max, and I still cry — often. The grief doesn’t disappear just because time has passed. If you’re feeling this too, please know you are not alone.

In this very special and deeply personal episode, I’m joined by pet loss grief counselor Beth Biglar, who offers compassion, understanding, and gentle guidance for anyone navigating pet loss during the holidays. We talk about love, loss, and how to move through this season with kindness toward yourself. Beth also shares her 12 Days of Christmas support for grieving pet parents — small, meaningful ways to help you cope, one day at a time.

This episode is meant to hold space for you. To remind you that there is a dog-loving community out there, ready to support you, to listen, and to walk beside you through the grief.

This is also the final episode of the season. As we close out this year, I want to thank you — truly — for listening, for sharing, and for being part of A Dog’s Devotion.

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas, and sending you love and peace during this tender season.

If this episode helps you, please consider subscribing to the podcast and the channel. Your support means more than you know 🤍
Thank you,

When Ruby Learned to Talk

What if your dog could tell you exactly what she wants?
Meet Ruby — the brilliant 11-month-old pup who is learning to communicate by pushing buttons.

Ruby now has access to 25 words, and she uses them to express:

  • what she wants
  • how she feels
  • who she wants to see
  • when she wants a walk, food, or play

She has been featured on CBC and Newsweek because the bond between Ruby and her mom, Meg, is extraordinary — and it opens a whole new world of communication between humans and dogs.

This episode will amaze dog lovers.
 It’s funny, emotional, and a little mind-blowing.

Can dogs really talk?
Ruby proves they can — one button at a time.

🎧 Listen now on all platforms.

I have always thought dogs were more intelligent than we give them credit for - you can tell by looking in their eyes. This proves it. I hope you enjoy this episode, it was a fun one for me, and really opened my eyes to how smart our canine friends really are.
As always, thanks for listening and l hope you enjoy this episode.

“Beagles, Freedom, and Fighting for Justice”

This week on A Dog’s Devotion, I sit down with Shannon Keith, the powerhouse founder of the Beagle Freedom Project — an organization that has changed the future for thousands of animals used in research labs around the world.

Shannon’s mission is both courageous and urgent: rescuing beagles and other animals from laboratory testing, fighting the systems that keep them hidden, and giving these dogs the chance to experience love, sunshine, and freedom for the first time in their lives.

In this emotional and eye-opening conversation, Shannon shares:
🐾 Why beagles are the number one breed used in testing (and what most people don’t know).
🐾 How Beagle Freedom Project rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs who’ve never stepped outside a cage.
🐾 The incredible transformations these animals undergo once they finally experience compassion.
🐾 The legal battles, the victories, and the ongoing fight to change outdated laws.
🐾 What we can all do to help end animal testing — and support the dogs still waiting for freedom.

This is a powerful episode that will move you, challenge you, and remind you why the human-animal bond is worth fighting for.
If you love dogs, care about justice, or want to learn what’s really happening behind closed doors, you won’t want to miss this conversation.

As always thank you for listening, this episode will really open your eyes to the amount of dog testing that is still going on across the US, right in our own backyard, in places you would never guess. It is so sad to see these poor helpless animals suffer, and l am hoping this episode will shine a light on this so more people can get involved to stop it.

Thank you,

A Special Type of Dog Park

🎙️ Next Episode: Mutts in the 6ix — Where Dogs and Humans Unite in Style

Imagine a place where your dog can run free, play, and socialize — while you relax with a coffee, a cocktail, or a great meal. Mutts in the 6ix is the first of its kind in Canada: a vibrant, safe, and beautiful space created for both dogs and their humans.

In this episode of A Dog’s Devotion, we explore how this Toronto gem is redefining what it means to be a dog lover in the city. It’s more than a park — it’s a community built on joy, connection, and the belief that our dogs deserve the best of everything.

Whether you’re a local looking for a new weekend spot or a dog parent dreaming of the perfect hangout, this episode will make you wish every city had a place like Mutts in the 6ix.
I speak with the owner and founder Sylvia Larke about her own journey through the US and how she realized there was another way for dogs and their humans to gather. She is a true inspiration, and l so enjoyed my conversation with her. If you have a dog, you know it is a great way to meet people, this location is in Toronto, Canada, but there are many similiar through out the United States.
I hope you enjoy this epsiode, it is about dogs of course, but also about the resilience of a woman who had a vision and fought for it. She never gave up!

How Therapy Dogs Can Help With Grief

Welcome to A Dog’s Devotion, the heartfelt podcast that celebrates the incredible bond between humans and dogs.

In this episode, we’re exploring the power of healing — the kind that comes not from medicine, but from a wagging tail and a gentle paw. The Alliance of Therapy Dogs brings comfort, companionship, and compassion to people who need it most — from patients in hospitals to residents in senior care homes, and those walking through the heavy fog of grief.

These special dogs have a remarkable gift — they don’t just visit; they connect. They lift spirits, ease loneliness, and remind us that love can be felt in the soft nudge of a nose or the warmth of fur resting beside us.

Today, we’ll learn how therapy dogs and their dedicated handlers are bringing hope and healing across communities, one visit — and one heartbeat — at a time.
Dogs are so special and help us with so much, they help us through everyday life, through pain and grief, and all they ever do is give us love, asking nothing in return.

Adopt A Shelter Dog Month

Welcome to A Dog’s Devotion.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month — and this episode is one that means so much to me personally. Because my own rescue, Max, came from a shelter in Mexico. He wasn’t just a dog I adopted — he was the dog who rescued me right back.

In this episode, I share my story — how I first learned about Max, the long journey that brought him from the streets of Mexico to a new life in Calgary, and the incredible woman who made it all possible. You’ll meet Jaimee, his amazing foster mom from Pawsitive Match Rescue. She’s the one who picked him up, cared for him, and gave him the chance to start again.

When I met Max, something changed in me forever. It was instant — like he had been waiting for me all along. And now, years later, I can tell you with all my heart — adopting a rescue dog doesn’t just change their life… it changes yours in ways you could never imagine.

Across North America, shelters are overflowing. So many dogs — young and old, big and small — are waiting for someone to give them a second chance. This month, and every month, I hope this episode inspires you to visit your local shelter, consider fostering, or even adopt a dog who needs you.

Because every rescue has a story. And sometimes, that story becomes the most beautiful chapter of your life. Along with my rescue of Max, was of course the harsh reality of dealing with his passing. A grieving process that is very real. Dog loss is real, and heart breaking. But time will heal, and one day l will reach out to Pawsitive Match again, and find my next Max.

In this episode of A Dog’s Devotion, I’m joined by Amanda, the proud mom of Instagram sensation Best Boy Brodie. Do dogs have emotions?

Today, I’m thrilled to welcome Holly, an animal welfare scientist whose work with the Canine Science Collaboratory is both groundbreaking and heartwarming. Her research focuses on something that’s at the very core of this podcast—the positive emotional states of dogs, and how we, as humans, interpret their happiness. Holly’s work isn’t just about science—it’s about deepening our connection with our dogs, learning to see and honor the emotions they experience every day. I can’t wait to explore how understanding a dog’s joy can change the way we live with, love, and care for them.

This episode will be the last one of the season. We have done a lot of work honouring Max the past year, and will now take a bit of a break. Max passed on August 21, 2024.
Love your dogs and always appreciate the time you have with them.
A Dog's Devotion will be back September 21st.
Thank you for llstening, and in the mean time we will be playing some of our season's highlights just in case you missed them.
