120. Tom (A Bittersweet Goodbye to Fincher's)

Tom Fincher is here today, to chat about a store that’s been in many of our lives for most or all of our lives! For 70 years, Fincher’s has stood near the corner of Courthouse Square and Colborne St.

Started by Tom’s dad Dennis and continued on by Tom we are going to talk about the decision to retire, what it’s meant to him to have that business in town all these years and what he thinks his dad might think about all that has happened and the upcoming retirement.

We’ll chat about some of Tom & Dawn’s proudest moments and challenges through the years and we’ll share a little about the new owners and the new name of the business

And we will wrap with what’s next for Tom and Dawn as they settle into retired life and Tom’s heartfelt message to you.

A Life That's Good
119. Paige

I’ve known this wonderful human for a very long time. Maybe more accurately I've known her parents for a very long time and more known of her and her siblings shenanigans as peers of my own kids.

I’ve watched her grow to follow in her mom’s step dancing shoes, become an accomplished musician, a poet, a songwriter, a performer with Drayton Entertainment, a business owner with her sister that offers performing arts training for youth and a producer/director of shows for those same youth. She performs regularly with her family "The Ballaghs" and with her siblings as “The Crew.” And she's a solo artist with two projects to her credit. We'll hear a little music from her current release in this episode.

So that’s a lot of what she does, but who is the real Paige Ballagh? I hope you have as much fun learning the answer to that question as I did.

118. Kim, Travis, Deborah & Friends (Local Christmas Magic)

Local Christmas Magic. When I wrote this up and autofill decided on the word "Magic" before I could type "Music", I couldn't help but think it was a better choice.

Today is a Radio Sessions podcast with the extended versions of conversations heard on the Saturday morning show on Shoreline Classics. Our studio was full of friends including, Kim & Travis Teed and several members of the HuronSong Chorus (Deborah Bailey, Michele Hansen, Richard Madge, Craig Wark & Nisa Howe Lobb)

You'll hear details on some upcoming Christmas shows, but you'll also hear a lot of passion from our guests today. Passion for the magic of community, belonging, singing and contributing to great causes.

116. Sarah Louise & Paul (The Maitland Hollar)

On the pod this episode, my friend Sarah Louise and one of her band mates Paul McInnis of The Maitland Hollar, a great local band that was in Nashville recently recording some music.

We're going to get to know them to know a little and maybe we can talk them into sharing one of their newly recorded songs with us while they’re here. :)

115. Michelle - Belonging Matters (United Way Perth Huron)

I was lucky enough to be asked to co-mc an event recently with my friend Roz.  It was a United Way Perth-Huron workshop called Belonging Matters and it put a frame around some things I think I knew sub-consciously but hadn’t quite defined in my mind, mostly that belonging does indeed matter.

Much of it was based on a book called “Bowling Alone” by Robert Putnam  about the collapse and revival of community and a movie based on the book called “Join or Die.”

I'm joined in this episode by my friend Michelle Millar of the United Way to talk about the workshop and what’s next.

113. Ryan & Doug (Volkfest + Goderich Track Rebuild) (Radio Sessions 09/20/25)

We’re featuring a couple of extended versions of interviews from my Saturday Morning radio show on Shoreline Classics this week.

The Radio Sessions for September 20th highlight something I’m really looking forward to next Sunday (28th)  It’s Volkfest, happening for the first time around the Square in Goderich! Ryan Somers, the man behind it all since it’s inception is here with all the details.

AND

The Goderich Track Rebuild. If you’re a little older like me, you might remember a former teacher at GDCI by the name of Lynn Myers. He was the man behind the original track that is well over 40 yrs old now and in dire need of a rebuild. It’s an important thing I think for our community (Who knows what future Canadian Olympian might train on the track?) Doug Cruickshank is here to get us up to speed on all the fund raising efforts.

A Life That's Good
111. Brayden (Salt Mine Creamery)

I think we’ve mentioned this before but last year, Milli aka Ally, took the County of Huron’s  "Starter Company Plus" program and in that process met a lot of budding entrepreneurs and made a few friends in the process. One of those people is  Brayden Lisiecki of Salt Mine Creamery …

If you’ve checked out the Goderich BIA's Farmer’s Market this summer in you may have met Brayden and her partner Chase as they shared their home made ice cream with us. I know we've enjoyed it a few times.

In this episode, we’ll get you the lowdown on how it started, where they’re at with it and as the days of summer dwindle, what we can look forward to!

110. David & Jacqui (Ordinary Magic) (Radio Sessions 08/30/25)

"Ordinary Magic" is a youth theatre program at The Livery Theatre. In association with the Goderich Little Theatre, it's a place where our kids get the chance to participate in productions and workshops to develop confidence, creativity, and a love for the performing arts. And I believe, in the process, they learn a little something extra about life too.

It’s an amazing initiative and opportunity for our kids and so we’re going to take some time to chat with David Armour and Jacqui Knap, two of the people who are instrumental in making all happen.

109. Tiffany (Forest Tails Doggy Day Care) (Radio Sessions 08/23/25)

To some they’re just dogs but to many of us, they’re a whole lot more than that! They’re best friends, companions, part of the family and I think most of us, and especially our guest today, believe they deserve a little joy in life.

Tiffany Jones provides all that and more at "Forest Tails", a doggy adventure camp set in an enchanted private forest.

Tiffany was a guest on my Saturday morning radio show on Shoreline Classics. Here is our extended conversation.

The Radio Sessions are extended versions of interviews and conversations heard on The Phil Main Show, Saturday mornings on Shoreline Classics FM. Also, Clare Day (The Den) & Cindy Smale (West St. Willies Eatery) remind us that Downtown Goderich is OPEN!

105. Danny (Daniel Lanois)

He's one of the great producers of our time, maybe of all time. Daniel Lanois has produced records for artists like: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Peter Gabriel, U2, Robbie Robertson, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson and so many others.

It was a real blessing to have a few minutes to chat with this Canadian born and raised musician, singer/songwriter and producer who has sculpted so much of the soundtrack of our lives.

He is embarking on a small venue tour of Ontario in August and will be stopping in at The Livery Theatre in Goderich on Aug. 19th. At last check only a few tickets remain. Check availability at the livery.ca or at daniellanois.com

104. Tim ("Live" w Tim Schou)

This was one of our favourite experiences with the podcast, a live recording with platinum selling, singer/songwriter from Denmark, Tim Schou.

The show was recorded by our good friend and engineer extraordinaire, Brendan Couture as part of the Goderich BIA Concert Series on June 5th, 2025 and features a lot of wonderful live music and fan interaction with one of our new favourite artists.

Thanks B & Tim for making this happen. It was a remarkable experience that we're so glad we were able to have.

103. Madeleine (Culbert's Bakery)

It was our very first podcast back in March of 2023 but a few things have changed so we thought maybe the time was right to do an update on one of our all time favourite places.

Since the early 1800’s, it has dispensed joy to all who've passed through its doors.  Though the bakery has been around now for well over two centuries it was in 1942 that Mel Culbert took it over, soon passing it on to his son Berry and then eventually to Darin who ran it until 2022, when our guest today took ownership.

We’re going to learn more about Madeleine Lambert and her families history in Goderich, her long standing love of the bakery, the challenging process of taking over such an iconic and well loved business and her dreams for the future of Culbert’s Bakery!
