Edokko Audiobook by Isaac Shapiro
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1308/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Edokko Subtitle: Growing Up a Stateless Foreigner in Wartime Japan Author: Isaac Shapiro Narrator: Isaac Shapiro Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 13 mins Language: English Release date: 01-12-18 Publisher: seasidepress.org Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: In 1926, professional musicians Constantine Shapiro, born in Moscow in 1896, and Lydia Chernetsky (Odessa, 1905) met and married in Berlin, Germany after their respective families had suffered continuous persecution in war-torn Russia, or the Soviet Union, as it was known after 1922. With Hitler's national socialism on the rise, remaining in Berlin was for the newlyweds out of the question and they decided to continue their odyssey, first to Palestine, then China, to ultimately spend the World War II years in the relative safety of Japan. In 1931, they found themselves in Japan, where Isaac, son number four and author of this memoir, was born. A few years later, with World War II imminently looming, and the subsequent bombing of Pearl Harbor, their lives were disrupted once again. In 1944, the Yokohama shore was banned for foreigners and the Shapiro family, including their five children, were forced to move to Tokyo, where they survived endless hardships, among others the intensified strategic United States bombing campaigns on Tokyo. Operation Meetinghouse started March 9, 1945 and is regarded as the single most destructive bombing raid in human history. The Japanese later called the operation the Night of the Black Snow. During the subsequent American occupation of Japan, 14-year-old Isaac, being multilingual, was hired as an interpreter by John Calvin Munn, a United States Marine colonel, (later promoted to Lt. Gen.) who, when the war was over, paved the way for Isaac, or Ike as he soon became known, to immigrate to the United States. In the summer of 1946, Isaac landed in Hawaii, at the time a United States territory, altering the course of his life forever.

Our Year of War Audiobook by Daniel P. Bolger
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1308/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Our Year of War Subtitle: Two Brothers, Vietnam, and a Nation Divided Author: Daniel P. Bolger Narrator: Kiff Vandenheuvel Format: Unabridged Length: 12 hrs and 2 mins Language: English Release date: 12-15-17 Publisher: Hachette Audio Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Two brothers - Chuck and Tom Hagel - who went to war in Vietnam, fought in the same unit, and saved each other's lives. They disagreed about the war, but they fought it together. In 1968 America was divided. Flag-draped caskets came home by the thousands. Riots ravaged our cities. Assassins shot our political leaders. Black fought white, young fought old, fathers fought sons. And it was the year that two brothers from Nebraska went to war. In Vietnam, Chuck and Tom Hagel served side by side in the same rifle platoon. Together they fought in the Mekong Delta, battled snipers in Saigon, and chased the enemy through the jungle, and each saved the other's life under fire. But when their one-year tour was over, these two brothers came home side by side but no longer in step - one supporting the war, the other hating it. Former secretary of defense Chuck Hagel and his brother, Tom, epitomized the best and withstood the worst of the most tumultuous, shocking, and consequential year in the last half century. Following the brothers' paths from the prairie heartland through a war on the far side of the world and back to a divided America, Our Year of War tells the story of two brothers at war - a gritty, poignant, and resonant story of a family and a nation divided yet still united.
©2006 Longanesi (P)2015 Adriano Salani Editore

The Other Side of Hell: How I Survived Living with a Drug Addict Audiobook by Jamie Lee Coulter
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1308/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The Other Side of Hell: How I Survived Living with a Drug Addict Author: Jamie Lee Coulter Narrator: Kathleen Holeman Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 59 mins Language: English Release date: 11-23-17 Publisher: Freeman Group, LLC Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Imagine, if you can, putting your three week old baby into the freezer because her crying is interrupting your peace and quiet. And yes, I did say freezer and not refrigerator. And why was the baby crying? Because you were too messed up on heroin and hadn't fed her all day. Imagine, if you can, waking up in a town on the opposite side of the United States from where you remembered being. You have no recollection of what you did or what was done to you during those four weeks. You didn't wake up in a four star hotel either. Instead, you're in a dumpster with smelly, putrid trash and you can't tell which smells worse - you or the trash. Imagine, if you can, walking into a fast food restaurant, pulling a gun on a young, innocent cashier. She's frightened, trembling, and near tears. Her hands are shaking so hard she can't get the money from the cash register to you fast enough, so you just pull the trigger. She falls to the floor - dead. But that's not your problem, you reach into the cash register yourself, grab the money, and yell "bitch" at her lifeless body as you walk out the door. I can't imagine it - can you? But what I can imagine - because I lived through it - is being on the other side of stories like those and many more. And this is my story of survival. No, I wasn't the alcoholic or drug addict who created the nightmare; I was simply the person who made the mistake of falling in love with one.

Title: 8 Seconds of Courage Subtitle: A Soldier's Story from Immigrant to the Medal of Honor Author: Flo Groberg, Tom Sileo Narrator: Corey Brill, Flo Groberg Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 40 mins Language: English Release date: 11-07-17 Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 10 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: A story of valor and the making of a hero. Florent Groberg, who grew up in France, emigrated to the US and was the first immigrant in 40 years to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor after he saved many lives by tackling a suicide bomber in Afghanistan. Florent "Flo" Groberg was born in 1983 in the suburbs of Paris. When he was in middle school, his family moved to the US, and Flo became a naturalized citizen in 2001. After attending the University of Maryland, he joined the army in 2008 and deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. He deployed a second time in 2012. In August of that year, Flo was guarding a high-level US-Afghan delegation and noticed someone suspicious: a local man stumbling toward his patrol. Flo reacted quickly and ran to tackle the man - who was wearing a suicide vest - before he could reach the patrol. Four people died in the subsequent explosion, but many others were spared. Flo himself was badly wounded and spent the next three years undergoing surgeries at Walter Reed Medical Center. On November 12, 2015, Captain Groberg was given the nation's highest military award, the Congressional Medal of Honor - the first immigrant to be so recognized since the Vietnam War. 8 Seconds of Courage tells Flo's story from his childhood in France to his decision to enlist and the grueling training he underwent at US Army Ranger School. Through trial and error, he learned to be a field commander and on the front lines in Afghanistan formed close and lasting bonds with his fellow soldiers. It was this powerful sense of responsibility that compelled him to take his brave action to save lives, even at the risk of his own. Seldom when we hear about the heroism of Medal of Honor recipients do we learn what motivates their actions. Flo Groberg provides that essential insight into his selfless act of valor while honoring his four fallen brothers in arms. 8 Seconds of Courage is a story of heroism, sacrifice, and camaraderie in wartime.

Title: The Amy Binegar-Kimmes-Lyle Book of Failures Subtitle: A Funny Memoir of Missteps, Inadequacies, and Faux Pas Author: Amy Lyle Narrator: Angela Rose Masi Format: Unabridged Length: 4 hrs and 54 mins Language: English Release date: 10-11-17 Publisher: Amy Lyle Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 15 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: The Amy Binegar-Kimmes-Lyle Book of Failures is a funny memoir. If you have ever failed at love or finances, been fired, not fit in, self-diagnosed yourself with disorders and conditions, and/or said "I really need to get my s*** together", this is the book for you. You may appreciate your own dysfunction a little more as you take a journey through Amys debacles, including: I Was Not Talking to You, where Amy mistakes a handsome man waving at her as a potential suitor but in reality he was only trying to inform her that her belt was dragging on the freeway, and In the Neighborhood, where members of a cult moving in concurred with a suspicious decline in the cat population. You will relish the chapters entitled Calls from Sharon, where Amys best friend rants about her kids not getting a fair shot because public schools are "so political", as her OB/GYN reported her vagina was "too clean" and how the most eligible bachelor from 1982 married a whore. Enjoy Im Going to Kill You, where Amy compares her lack of sleep from her husbands snoring to CIA agents extracting secrets from a POW. Feel 20-32 percent better about your own life after reading Getting Divorced Sucks, where 911 was called after Amy had an adverse reaction from taking Xanax. The book has been featured on the WXIA-TV morning show Atlanta & Company, National Public Radio, LA talk radio show What Women Want, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Points North Magazine, Northside Woman Magazine, Just4Fun Radio, and Scoop OTP and as Rick Limpert's Kindle Book of the Week. Amy Lyle is a comedienne, screenwriter, and monthly contributor to My Forsyth Magazine.

The Gourmands Way Audiobook by Justin Spring

Title: The Gourmands Way Subtitle: Six Americans in Paris and the Birth of a New Gastronomy Author: Justin Spring Narrator: Bronson Pinchot Format: Unabridged Length: 15 hrs and 30 mins Language: English Release date: 10-10-17 Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc. Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 9 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: A biography of six writers on food and wine whose lives and careers intersected in mid-20th-century France During les trente glorieuses - a 30-year boom period in France between the end of World War II and the 1974 oil crisis - Paris was not only the world's most delicious, stylish, and exciting tourist destination; it was also the world capital of gastronomic genius and innovation. The Gourmands' Way explores the lives and writings of six Americans who chronicled the food and wine of "the glorious 30", paying particular attention to their individual struggles as writers, to their life circumstances, and, ultimately, to their particular genius at sharing awareness of French food with mainstream American audiences. In doing so, this group biography also tells the story of an era when America adored all things French. The group is comprised of the war correspondent A. J. Liebling; Alice B. Toklas, Gertrude Stein's life partner, who reinvented herself at 70 as a cookbook author; M. F. K. Fisher, a sensualist and fabulist storyteller; Julia Child, a television celebrity and cookbook author; Alexis Lichine, an ambitious wine merchant; and Richard Olney, a reclusive artist who reluctantly evolved into a brilliant writer on French food and wine. Together, these writer-adventurers initiated an American cultural dialogue on food that has continued to this day. Justin Spring's The Gourmands' Way is the first book ever to look at them as a group and to specifically chronicle their Paris experiences.

Becoming Myself Audiobook by Irvin Yalom
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1308/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Becoming Myself Subtitle: A Psychiatrist's Memoir Author: Irvin Yalom Narrator: Peter Berkrot Format: Unabridged Length: 11 hrs and 18 mins Language: English Release date: 10-03-17 Publisher: Little, Brown Book Group Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 18 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Irvin D. Yalom has made a career of investigating the lives of others. In Becoming Myself, his long-awaited memoir, he turns his therapeutic eye on himself, delving into the relationships that shaped him and the groundbreaking work that made him famous. The first-generation child of immigrant Russian Jews, Yalom grew up in a lower-class neighbourhood in Washington, DC. Determined to escape its confines, he set his sights on becoming a doctor. An incredible ascent followed: we witness his start at Stanford Medical School amid the cultural upheavals of the 1960s, his turn to writing fiction as a means of furthering his exploration of the human psyche and his rise to international prominence. Yalom recounts his revolutionary work in group psychotherapy and how he became the foremost practitioner of existential psychotherapy, a method that draws on the wisdom of great thinkers over the ages. He reveals the inspiration for his many seminal books, including Love's Executioner and When Nietzche Wept, which meld psychology and philosophy to arrive at arresting new insights into the human condition. Interweaving the stories of his most memorable patients with personal tales of love and regret, Becoming Myself brings listeners close to Yalom's therapeutic technique, his writing process and his family life. Critic Reviews: "When Yalom publishes something - anything - I buy it, and he never disappoints. He's an amazing storyteller, a gorgeous writer, a great, generous, compassionate thinker, and - quite rightly - one of the world's most influential mental healthcare practitioners." (Nicola Barker, Guardian Best Books of 2017) "Wonderful, compelling and as insightful about its subject and about the times he lived in as you could hope for. A fabulous read." Title: Dangerous Boobies Subtitle: Breaking Up with My Time-Bomb Breasts Author: Caitlin Brodnick Narrator: Harold Limpert, Catlin Brodnick, Margaret Brodnick Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 7 mins Language: English Release date: 10-03-17 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 8 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: After watching too many family members die of cancer, at age 28, public speaker and comedian Caitlin Brodnick was tested for the BRCA1 gene mutation and tested positive, indicating an 87% chance she'd likely be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. She had a preventative double mastectomy, thereby becoming an everywoman's Angelina Jolie. Dangerous Boobies: Breaking Up with My Time-Bomb Breasts goes in depth into her experience from testing to surgery and on to recovery. Listeners hear the full story told in a warm, funny, and approachable way, even what it was like to go from a size 32G bra - giant, for a woman who is barely over five feet tall! - to a 32C. Engaging and open, Caitlin admits to having hated her breasts long before her surgery, and enjoying the process of "designing" her new breasts, from the shape of the breasts to the size and color of the nipples. While Caitlin's primary narrative explores the BRCA gene and breast cancer, her story is also one about body acceptance and what it takes to be confident with and in charge of one's body. Her speaking engagements and comedy routines have shown that the wider topic of breasts, breast size, and personal identity is resonating with younger listeners.

I was petrified. There was no immediate response on my part, only a deep sense of fear entombed by a completely paralyzed inner spirit. Much to my surprise, he spoke again: "Sir, you've waited too long to get here. You're not going to make it." And he continued: "If you believe in God, this is the time to make peace." In that very moment, I said to myself, "What do you mean, "If you believe in God?" Of course I believe in God! I'm a man of faith and a Catholic priest!" Fr. John Tourangeau, O. Praem., a Norbertine priest who had an afterlife experience following a major heart attack, emphatically states, "Heaven is for real!" Within this enlightening and hope-filled book, Fr. John weaves a powerful and dynamic tapestry of the Kingdom of God at hand through the exploration of Christian tradition, Sacred Scripture, Catholic teaching, as well as his own lived experiences.

My Life with Bob Audiobook by Pamela Paul
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1308/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: My Life with Bob Subtitle: Flawed Heroine Keeps Book of Books, Plot Ensues Author: Pamela Paul Narrator: Eileen Stevens, Pamela Paul Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 55 mins Language: English Release date: 09-26-17 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 16 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Imagine keeping a record of every book you've ever read. What would this reading trajectory say about you? With passion, humor, and insight, the editor of the New York Times Book Review shares the stories that have shaped her life. Pamela Paul has kept a single book by her side for 28 years - carried throughout high school and college, hauled from Paris to London to Thailand, from job to job, safely packed away and then carefully removed from apartment to house to its current perch on a shelf over her desk - reliable if frayed, anonymous-looking yet deeply personal. This book has a name: Bob. Bob is Paul's Book of Books, a journal that records every book she's ever read, from Sweet Valley High to Anna Karenina, from Catch-22 to Swimming to Cambodia, a journey in reading that reflects her inner life - her fantasies and hopes, her mistakes and missteps, her dreams and her ideas, both half-baked and wholehearted. Her life, in turn, influences the books she chooses, whether for solace or escape, information or sheer entertainment. But My Life with Bob isn't really about those books. It's about the deep and powerful relationship between book and reader. It's about the way books provide each of us the perspective, courage, companionship, and imperfect self-knowledge to forge our own path. It's about why we read what we read and how those choices make us who we are. It's about how we make our own stories. Critic Reviews: "Pamela Paul, editor of the New York Times Book Review, and narrator Eileen Stevens make excellent partners for Paul's memoir. After a pleasant introduction by Paul herself, Stevens performs with such enthusiasm that she could be the author." (AudioFile)

While many worry that our electronic gadgets are dumbing us down, she revealed how they can give voice to others, including children with autism like Gus - a boy who has trouble looking people in the eye, hops when he's happy, and connects with inanimate objects on an empathetic level. To Siri with Love is a collection of funny, poignant, and uplifting stories about living with an extraordinary child who has helped a parent see and experience the world differently. From the charming (Gus weeping with sympathy over the buses that would lie unused while the bus drivers were on strike) to the painful (paying $22,000 for a behaviorist in Manhattan to teach Gus to use a urinal) to the humorous (Gus' insistence on getting naked during all meals, whether at home or not, because he does not want to get his clothes dirty) to the profound (how an automated "assistant" helped a boy learn how to communicate with the rest of the world), the stories in To Siri with Love open our eyes to the magic and challenges of a life beyond the ordinary.

Title: The Chick and the Dead Subtitle: Life and Death Behind Mortuary Doors Author: Carla Valentine Narrator: Beverley A. Crick Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 20 mins Language: English Release date: 08-08-17 Publisher: Tantor Audio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 14 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: Carla Valentine works with the dead. After studying forensics, she assisted pathologists with postmortems for years before becoming the curator of the world's most famous pathology museum. When it comes to death, she truly is an expert, and in this book she shares that expertise. Using the most common postmortem process as the backbone of the narrative, The Chick and the Dead takes the listener through the process of an autopsy while also describing the history and changing cultures of our relationship with the dead. The book is full of vivid insight into what happens to our bodies in the end. Each chapter considers an aspect of an autopsy alongside an aspect of Carla's own life and work and touches on some of the more controversial aspects of our feelings toward death, including the relationship between sex and death and our attitudes toward human tissue collection. Starting with the first cut, we move from external examination into the body itself, discovering more about the heart, stomach, and brain, and into dismembered and reconstructed bodies, at each stage taking a colorful detour into the question of what these things can teach us about the living. Critic Reviews: "[Valentine's] zest for gross-out depictions of bodily functions...works spectacularly well...the book succeeds as a morbidly galloping parade of every possible kind of dead body." The Book of Emma Reyes Audiobook

Title: The Book of Emma Reyes Subtitle: A Memoir Author: Emma Reyes, Daniel Alarcón - translator, Daniel Alarcón - introduction Narrator: Marisol Ramirez, Daniel Alarcón Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 8 mins Language: English Release date: 08-08-17 Publisher: Penguin Audio Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 8 votes Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs Publisher's Summary: A literary discovery: an extraordinary account, in the tradition of The House on Mango Street and Angela's Ashes, of a Colombian woman's harrowing childhood. This astonishing memoir was hailed as an instant classic when first published in Colombia in 2012, nearly a decade after the death of its author, who was encouraged in her writing by Gabriel García Márquez. Comprised of letters written over the course of 30 years, and translated and introduced by acclaimed writer Daniel Alarcón, it describes in vivid, painterly detail the remarkable courage and limitless imagination of a young girl growing up with nothing. Emma Reyes was an illegitimate child, raised in a windowless room in Bogotá with no water or toilet and only ingenuity to keep her and her sister alive. Abandoned by their mother, she and her sister moved to a Catholic convent housing 150 orphan girls, where they washed pots, ironed and mended laundry, scrubbed floors, cleaned bathrooms, sewed garments and decorative cloths for the nuns - and lived in fear of the devil. Illiterate and knowing nothing of the outside world, Emma escaped at age 19, eventually establishing a career as an artist and befriending the likes of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as well as European artists and intellectuals. The portrait of her childhood that emerges from this clear-eyed account inspires awe at the stunning early life of a gifted writer whose talent remained hidden for far too long. For more than 70 years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world.
