This week, we talk with an inspiring voice in the adaptive outdoors community — Terry Burke Schake, founder of Outdoor Adventures for the Disabled, a growing Facebook group dedicated to connection, support, and encouragement for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts with disabilities.
Terry is a Pennsylvania native now living in Ohio, and he’s a paraplegic due to a gunshot wound. His story is one of resilience, purpose, and a deep love for the outdoors — and we’re honored to share it.
In this episode, we laugh with Terry about hunts and he opens up about:
🔹 His spinal cord injury — how it happened, and how he rebuilt his outlook on life in the days, weeks, and years afterward.
🔹 His early connection to hunting and how his relationship with the outdoors evolved after becoming a wheelchair user.
🔹 Adaptive gear, mindset shifts, that keep him in the woods and behind the trigger.
🔹 A memorable hunt, from planning and logistics to the moment of success — and what that experience taught him.
🔹 The real barriers disabled hunters face, from terrain to transportation to stigma — and practical ways to break through each one.
🔹 How hunting helped his mental and physical recovery, and how the outdoors continues to help him “redefine outdoor ability.”
🔹 Advice for newly injured hunters who want to get back out there but don’t know where to start — resources, attitude, and community.
🔹 The role of friends and family in the adaptation process, and what has surprised him along the way.
🔹 His goals for the future — hunts, gear, advocacy, and inspiring more people to get involved.
🔹 How able-bodied hunters can support adaptive hunting, ask better questions, and help create a more inclusive outdoor world.
Terry’s story is powerful. His passion is contagious. And his mission to build community for disabled hunters is something we’re proud to uplift.

Welcome to the Accessible Hunter Podcast! Today, we’re honored to talk with Alison Mitchell — a young woman whose story embodies courage, faith, and determination.
After losing her vision due to cerebral venous fibrosis, Alison refused to let that stop her from pursuing her passion for the outdoors.
Recently, she joined Barb Terry and the team from Whitetail Heritage of Ohio on an adaptive hunt, where she successfully harvested a deer using a crossbow and specialized equipment. Alison’s story reminds us that with the right mindset — and a little adaptive ingenuity — the outdoors truly can be for everyone.

This week, cohosts Mike and Greg open up about what hunting was like for them before and after disability — and how the passion for the outdoors never left, even when life changed.
We roll into three big topics:
Adaptive Gear That Changes the Game
Track chairs, gun mounts, modified bows… people might see them as “gadgets,” but for us, they’re the bridge between watching a hunt and actually pulling the trigger. That first moment you realize you can still do it is huge — it’s like getting a piece of yourself back.
Mental Resilience in the Field
Hunting with a disability is about so much more than filling a tag. It’s adapting, problem-solving, and pushing past limits you thought were set in stone. Every challenge you beat in the field builds confidence that carries over into everyday life. And the community? It’s everything. Around a campfire or in a blind with someone who gets it — you’re reminded you’re not alone.
Breaking Misconceptions
One of the biggest myths is that disability means you can’t be an active, successful hunter. Or that adaptive hunts are “easier.” Truth is, it often takes more preparation, creativity, and grit. Adaptive gear doesn’t hunt for you — it just levels the playing field so skill and knowledge can shine. Changing these ideas starts with visibility. Share your hunts. Invite others to see how the gear works. The more people witness it firsthand, the faster those old stereotypes fade.
Tune in and hear the full conversation — your perspective on what’s possible in the outdoors might just change.

Being able to share the woods, the waterways, and more so the amazing memories is what it’s truly all about.
Having a successful harvest is great, but being able to build bonds through tragedy is always truly humbling and heartfelt.
On today’s episode, we were able to bring on our buddy Jason Beard with The KT Team and to be able to lightly highlight all the amazing work that they do for the disability community, the turkey calling industry, and a little about the massive undergoings behind the screens.
I hope you’ll tune in and check them out, I know you’ll be blessed.
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Jason Beard for the last 30 years and to see his heart poured out into so many others is truly a blessing.
Every member of the KT Team is like family to us and their humble aspects of giving back are not lost on this old quadriplegic. There is a magnitude of work, love , and spirit that they put into each hunt and to every interaction that will leave each participant feeling truly heard and a member of The Team. They continue to give credence to the mantra “The Outdoors are For Everyone”.
From the extension of BeAdaptive equipment to the use of accessible golf carts, they’re finding new ways to get more wheelchairs back out into nature. It’s all about finding a way.
We’re honored to welcome Randy Ferguson, Executive Director of Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH), to the Accessible Hunter Podcast!
Randy and his team are making a massive impact—last year alone, HSH donated over 261,000 pounds of venison to food banks and community organizations across Pennsylvania. That’s thousands of nutritious meals reaching families in need, all thanks to the generosity of hunters and processors statewide.
Tune in as we talk with Randy about how HSH works, how you can get involved, and the power of giving back through the outdoors.
Whether you’re a hunter, a processor, or someone who supports accessible outdoor opportunities, this episode will inspire you.
