Rodrigo Garcia - In The Sea

Professor and Para-athlete Rodrigo de Oliveira Garcia is the writer, co-director and subject of the documentary’ In the sea’.

The film shows Rodrigo traveling to swim for 8km in Rio de Janeiro. He narrates the sensations of spending hours alone in the sea, unveiling issues such as the autonomy of the use of his body, the ableist discourse of overcoming, and racial inequality in his country.

This conversation touches on many aspects of disability issues and environmental access, as well as citizenship handled as a commodity through different cultures and economic systems, opposite indigenous peoples and and their relation with their lands, nature and self. Rodrigo speaks about his unique heritage, his social class and his take on disability culture and the global burning issues as COP30 comes to one more unresolved ending.
