All About Beer
AAB 083: The Importance of Pilsner Urquell, as Explained by its Long-time Brewmaster

Pilsner Urquell is one of the most famous beers in the world and many would argue it’s the original golden lager as, after all, “Pilsner Urquell” means Original Pilsner. But what is its origin story, how is it brewed and how has Pilsner Urquell the beer evolved (if at all) from its invention in 1842 in the town of Plzen, Czech Republic?

On this episode of the “All About Beer” podcast, we talk to Brewmaster Emeritus and Plzen native Václav Berka about the history of golden lager from the Czech perspective and how Pilsner Urquell conquered the world and brought Czech lager and drinking traditions to mankind.

Statistics tell us the truth.  And while it is true that the industry is facing headwinds, there are segments and beers that are doing well.  What can we learn from those positive trends to take beer into the future?

On this episode of the All About Beer podcast, we take a deep dive into all things Budvar with their Deputy Brewmaster, Petr Kosin about how Budvar goes from Czech ingredients to your local shop. And Kosin answers the question everyone wants to know: should there be diacetyl in your Czech lager?

All About Beer
A Deep Dive Into Uncommonly Good Kentucky Common

Kentucky Common may be a lesser known beer style, but it has seen an increase in interest in recent years, thanks at least in part to it now being included in the BJCP Style Guidelines.  How do new styles get added to the guidelines?  And what is the effect?

For those who love Kentucky Common, they know that it has a wonderful sweetness from malt and corn.  It is similar to cream ale, but features darker color.  Like many beer styles, Kentucky Common evolved because of the ingredients that were available to area brewers and the climate in which they brewed.  Kentucky Common is a delicious, thirst-quenching trip in a time machine.

All About Beer
AAB 077: There’s Nothing Like a Good, Cold Beer in the Summer

There's nothing like a good beer in summer, surrounded by friends, BBQ lit up with burgers sizzling and the baseball game on the radio. Some breweries around the U.S. look to exemplify summer in a single beer style like golden lager or pale ale. But what really makes these beers fit for summer? Aren't all beers good when the weather turns warmer? What are customers looking for in a summer beer and how are breweries delivering on this?

On this episode of the All About Beer podcast, we talk to Washington based Chuckanut Brewery and Brooklyn based Threes Brewing about their summer seasonals and what they hope to achieve by brewing these summer styles.

All About Beer
Heritage Corn Tells a Story in Craft Beers

There is perhaps no crop that illustrates the success of agricultural science like corn.  It has been bred to grow well, with strong stalks and robust disease resistance.  And scientists have engineered multiple uses for it, making it a very agronomically successful plant.

But that success has resulted in an almost monoculture of modern corn in North America.  Historically, corn was a diverse crop, with many varieties grown throughout the land.  Some brewers are helping to revive these heritage corn varieties and embracing the unique characteristics that they bring.  This produces a unique product, is friendly to the land and harkens back to a simpler time.  In a way, beer made with heritage corn is time travel in your glass.
