Foam is perhaps the least appreciated aspect of beer. Somebody even hate it, wanting a glass filled to the brim with liquid. But experts insist that beer foam is important. It is visually appealing, it is an indicator of quality and freshness, and it affects the mouthfeel and even the flavor of the beer.
What makes good foam? There are factors inside the brewhouse and outside the brewhouse that affect beer foam. At its most basic, whiskey is distilled beer. And yet, beer makers and whiskey makers rarely share information, techniques and ingredients.
In recent years, some brewers and whiskey makers are taking inspiration from beer, using craft beer ingredients like specialty malts and different yeast strains, to make more interesting base beer that is then distilled to new styles of beer.
