[Intro 1] Hello! Hola! Marhaba!

WELCOME to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! Join me, Syazana Sani and the Astro Duo, Azfar Azman and Azimah Azman, your hosts from New York. Let’s strive to educate, regenerate and elevate family institutions through optimal productivity and wellness education, one episode at a time.

[Intro 2]

ARE YOU READY to listen to inspirational stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility from multicultural families and special needs communities? Sit back, relax and be inspired by the awesome people that we highlight in the podcast…

Seeking Knowledge and Wellness

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] You are listening to episode three of season two with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo: Azfar and Azimah.

[Sound effects 🔘]

“Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.”

Seeking knowledge is our topic for today so let’s introduce our special guest whom we interviewed during a family trip to Cairo, Egypt way back in November 2022.

[Azimah] Let’s welcome…

[Sound effects 🥁]

Ustadha Fatin Insyirah Binte Mohamed Azan!

[Sound effect 👏🏼]

She’s also my lovely cousin! Woohoo!

Assalamu’alaikum, habibati (May peace be upon you, my darling)?

[Fatin] Wa’alaikumsalam! (And may peace be upon you too!)

Question 1

[Sound effects ✅]

[Azimah] How did you feel after graduating from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt?

[Sound effects 🪄]

[Fatin] Bismillahirahmanirahim.

Alhamdulillah (Praise and thanks to Allah SWT)! I feel delightful and unbelievable graduating from Al-Azhar University. If you guys don’t know, Al-Azhar University is one of the best universities in Cairo (Egypt) and also around the world.  [Sound effects 🎉]

Alhamdulillah! I’ve just gotten my certificate after four (4) years of hustling and studying like crazy!

Question 2

[Sound effects ✅]

[Azimah] Were you afraid when you left Singapore to study in Egypt?

[Sound effects 🪄]

[Fatin] Honestly, afraid and excited to start my own journey without my family members with me. Yeah! I’m traveling abroad with my friends only. That was my first time being independent, just with my friends to go abroad for my studies and it’s not an easy decision for me to make because I’m very family oriented.

Question 3

[Sound effects ✅]

[Syazana] How do you cope with being homesick while studying overseas?

[Sound effects 🪄]

For the first few months, I always call my mom everyday, call my mom, call my grandma, call my father. Alhamdulillah! Now we have social media where we can easily interact with our family members. Despite the time difference (from) Cairo and Singapore, alhamdulillah, I still managed. When I come back from school, I will straight away call my mom because I know once I come back from school, my mom’s gonna sleep because usually I come back from school around 4:00 PM and Singapore time around 10:00 PM. My mom usually sleeps early so I will (be) like “Hello, Mom! I’m back from school!”

[Sound effects✅]

[Azimah] Let’s find out what her mom, Aini Salim, felt about letting her go and study overseas.

[Sound effects 🪄]

[Aini] At first it was difficult. But because of the journey for her to continue her studies and passion, I  wish her all the best for her to proceed with what she loves to do. And I hope that Allah SWT will always protect her.

Question 4

[Sound effects ✅]

[Azimah] Do you have any study tips to recommend?

[Sound effects 🪄]

[Fatin] Firstly, when you want to study, we need to check or we need to know what’s our weakness and what is our strength.

For example, I need to make a  timetable for myself because I need to discipline myself because here in Egypt, we don’t have attendance, we don’t have any assignments to do. So when I’m here with my friends, actually we don’t have anything to do, we are not busy with any assignments and all.

[Sound effects 🥁🥁]

For me, my studying tip is that I need to make a study timetable. For example, before I get my exam timetable, I need to set a timetable, where each day, what subject I need to revise. For example, on Monday, I need to revise Fiqh and I need to set a target. My book, there’s 300 pages. So on Monday I need to read that book from (the) first page till 60 pages, for example. If that day I have not finished that 60 pages, I can’t sleep!

[Sound effects🫣]

If I sleep, then the next day or the next time I revise my Fiqh subject, it will be you know…

[Sound effects 😮]

[Azimah] You’ll struggle.

[Fatin] Yeah! I will struggle!

Question 5

[Sound effects ✅]

[Syazana] What advice do you have for our listeners, especially students studying overseas who are far, far away from home and family?

[Sound effects 🪄]

1) Trust in Allah SWT and His Masterplan

Sometimes what we want, we don’t get it but Allah SWT gives the opposite things. For example, if we want something for example if we want A, sometimes Allah SWT will not give us A but He will give us B. But we, as a human being, sometimes we will be like “Why Allah SWT doesn’t give me the prayer that I asked for, the A for example but Allah gives me B?”

Whatever Allah SWT gives, it’s actually the best for you.

[Sound effects 🪄]

2) Allah SWT is listening so make du’a to Him.

As a student, when you feel you have a problem, ask du’a (supplication) from Allah SWT because he is listening.

[Sound effects 🔘]

[Syazana] As His humble devotees, we submit to Allah’s will and decree. Making du’a itself is an act of ibadah or worship and when Allah answers our du’a, it could be delayed or in a totally different form and that is a test for us as believers.

[Sound effects 🪄]

3) Do your best and make your parents proud of you

[Fatin] Four years' journey in Cairo is not an easy journey because I’m not with (my family. As I mentioned, I’m very close with my family. So when I study abroad, I learned a lot about being an independent girl and daughter. Because I’m the one who wants to study here so I need to make my parents proud. And I came here of course not from my money but my parents’ money so I need to do my very best.

[Sound effects 🔘]

[Syazana] It’s been a year since Fatin graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Shariah Law or Islamic Jurisprudence. After working as an Islamic educator in Muslim organizations and as an Arabic language tutor, she is now working in the Islamic Finance industry with a leading Islamic Financial Planning agency in Singapore.

[Azimah] Let’s also ask her mom, Aini, and her dad, Azan:

[Sound effects ✅]

How did you feel when you attended your daughter’s graduation ceremony in Egypt?

[Sound effects 🪄]

[Aini] Proud and happy that she has ended her journey here to fulfill her dreams.

[Sound effects 🎉]

[Azan] Alhamdulillah! All praise to Allah SWT. It’s been four (4) years, not easy for kakak (older sister) Fatin, not easy for us as her parents. Alhamdulillah, Allah SWT helped us. We’re so proud!

[Sound effects 🎉]

This is a big achievement especially in the Haji Repin family. So may Allah SWT make it easy for her and make it easy for everybody; Azimah, Azfar, and Muhammad Amirul and all of us.

Please take education as the first priority in our life. Inshaa Allah, everybody will succeed in whatever they do, not only in their studies but in every single angle that they take up in their life. Ameen ya rabbal ‘alamin (Lord of the worlds).

[Sound effects ✅]

[Syazana] Any special advice for all the dads out there?

[Azan] Most important beside giving moral support, du’a, du’a, du’a. Nabi (Prophet) Muhammad SAW, everything that he wants to do, he will start with du’a, in the midst he will du’a, at the end also he will du’a. So, we make du’a because we can plan but the Masterplan always comes from Allah SWT. Although all things have been written, Allah SWT can change the Masterplan by two (2) things: with our du’a and sadaqah jariyah (charity). Inshaa Allah (if God wills), if we follow this as what has been taught by Rasulullah SAW, whatever we plan, Inshaa Allah, Allah SWT will fulfill for us (Qabul).

[Sound effects 🔘]

[Syazana] We make du’a that Allah SWT will grant His blessings and guidance for Fatin and everyone listening to achieve success in this dunya or world and in the akhirah, the hereafter. Ameen!

[Sound effects 👏🏼]

Till we meet again in the next episode…bye!

Hello! Holã!

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] You are listening to the brand new season of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

This is the second episode of  Season 2. We are now in the last ten (10) days of Ramadan.

[Azfar] We would like to wish Ramadan Kareem to our Muslim listeners. May Almighty God, Allah SWT, grant you the special gift of meeting Laylatul Qadar, the Night of Decree and the Night of Power, which is better than a thousand months, ameen!

“There is also a special link between this night and seeking forgiveness from God.

A’isha R.A. asked the Prophet S.A.W., “O Messenger of Allah! If I knew which night is Laylatul-Qadr, what should I say during it?”

And he S.A.W. instructed her to say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عُفُوٌّ كَرِيمٌ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

O Allah! You are Most Forgiving, and you love to forgive. So forgive me.”

[Syazana] For more information on Ramadan and the significance of Laylatul-Qadr, visit YaqeenInstitute.org and check out the link in the podcast transcript to read its research paper.

https://yaqeeninstitute.org/read/paper/why-laylatul-qadr-the-significance-virtues-of-the-most-important-night-of-the-year

[Azfar] Now, let’s continue with the Ramadan theme. Do you want tips to stay fit and healthy in Ramadan? Let’s listen to a wonderful sharing on how to stay fit and healthy in Ramadan by Coach Zarina…

[Azimah] Woohoo!

[Zarina] Ramadan Kareem to all. Thank you Syazana and the Astro Duo for inviting me to this brand new season. I am so happy to be back in this blessed month of Ramadan!

It has been a busy year for me! I lead a variety of classes at several Shape Up NYC locations and Long Island City YMCA. These classes include Bootcamp, Cardio Sculpt, Deep Definitions and Indoor Cycling.

Therefore, it’s very important for me to stay healthy especially in this month where we observe the fast in addition to spiritual development and additional worship to Allah SWT.

[Azfar] What practical tips do you recommend to those who want to stay fit and healthy in Ramadan?

[Zarina] I would like to recommend 3 tips today.

First, I would encourage everyone …

  • To stay active by incorporating exercise or physical activity into your daily schedule

  • It’s always good to check with your doctor first if you are fit to engage in any physical activity or exercise.

  • Once cleared, opt for Low Intensity Workout by using your own Body Weight. This could be a walk around the neighborhood with a few rounds of Squats, Lunges and Push Ups.

  • Stretching is also highly recommended.

  • It’s best if you could include at least 10-15 minutes of exercise routine daily. It could probably ease your body and joints when performing your nightly prayers, inshaa Allah, God willing.

[Azfar] When is the best time to exercise in Ramadan?

[Zarina] The suggested time for a person who is fasting is about an hour before break-of-fast known as Iftar which is at sunset or before the pre-dawn meal known as Suhoor.

  • My second tip would be to consider nutrient-dense meals, water-rich food and plenty of water.

+Foods that are high in Fiber and Protein take longer to digest hence give you steady energy and ease your bowel movement.

Overnight Oats, Whole Grains, Fruits, Lentils & Eggs are some good examples.

+Water-Rich fruits and vegetables such as Cucumber, Celery & Watermelon are certainly good options.

+Remember to drink lots of water to help combat dehydration. Perhaps you can drink more water during Iftar and Suhoor ya!

  1. When breaking your fast during Iftar, it is recommended to break your fast like our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with dates in odd number(s): eat 1, 3, 5 or even 7 pieces if you can.

This reminds me of a narration by Al-Tarmidhi, 658:

“When any one of you breaks his fast, let him break his fast with dates for that is a blessing; if there are no dates then with water, for that is a means of purification.”

[Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi, 658.]

Dates are easily digested and serve as a quick source of energy and nutrients after a day of fasting!

And my final tip (3) is to take a little rest or naps during the day.

The additional salah or prayers in the evenings to early morning affect your sleep pattern. Rest when you have a chance during the day. A nap helps to recharge the body and definitely improve your mood!

These are my three tips to stay fit and healthy during Ramadan.

Most importantly, listen to your body and do what is best for your physical and spiritual wellness for the sake of Allah SWT.

All the best and Ramadan Kareem everyone!

[Azfar] We hope that you will benefit from the practical tips shared by Coach Zarina.

[Syazana] Till we meet again in the next episode…bye!

Segment I | Summer Holidays & Traditional Archers Singapore II

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] You are listening to the 34th episode of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

[Azimah] Today’s episode is also the finale of the first season of the podcast from January 2021 to September this year.

[Syazana] Hey! Time flies too quickly and summer holidays are over!

[Azimah] Yeah! I’m back to school! I’m now a junior in high school!

[Syazana] And our co-host, Azfar, has less than a year left to complete his National Service in Singapore, inshaa Allah, God willing!

[Azimah] Yeayyy!

[Syazana] Now let’s reflect on the activities we did during the summer holidays.

Which activities did you have the most fun during the summer holidays?

[Azimah] Hmmm…let me think!

[Syazana] Was it the Go Kart ride with uncle Azan and family in Batam Island, Indonesia? Or was it the trip with Grandpa and auntie Win to Kuala Lumpur and Melaka in Malaysia?

[Azimah] Ah yes! I love the Go Kart ride very much! And I love all the traditional food in Malaysia and also the hit movie, Mat Kilau!

[Syazana] The action pack movie, Mat Kilau, is a historical fiction inspired by the epic Malaysian historical figure, Mat Kilau, who had fought against the British colonists in Pahang before Malaysia’s independence.

[Azimah] The movie is now on Netflix, guys! And I’ve watched it many times because I love to watch Silat, the Malay martial arts.

[Syazana] For the last two episodes, we talked about how fun and beneficial learning archery was with Traditional Archers Singapore.

In the last episode, our special guest, brother Alfyan Ariff, the founder of Traditional Archers Singapore, spoke about what inspired him to establish traditional archery in modern Singapore and why traditional archery is a great sport for families.

[Azimah] We heard that the Traditional Archers Singapore have some great courses that you can consider signing up for.

Coming up next…

In the second segment of the podcast, we’ll learn about productivity and the nine dimensions of wellness—physical, emotional, environmental, spiritual, social, intellectual, mental, occupational and financial wellness—so we can survive and thrive in this unpredictable world.

Segment II | Occupational Wellness with Artist-Entrepreneur Faridah Jamal III

[Azimah, Syazana] Welcome back to segment two of the show!

Today is the fourth and final part of the Occupational Wellness with…

Miss Faridah Jamal from Singapore…woohoo!

[Syazana] Hello, Miss Faridah!

[Faridah] Hello! Hello, world!

[Syazana] What’s our next question for Miss Faridah, Azimah?

[Azimah] Question #4A

If someone is curious or keen to learn traditional music to achieve wellness, what steps would you recommend to him or her?

[Faridah] I would immediately establish connection; it would be especially good if we can have a physical meeting.

If not, we can meet virtually or call and discuss what the actual interest and needs are, and then recommend a customised programme.

[Syazana] So, what’s the next question?

[Azimah] Question #4B:

What are your future plans to spread love and wellness through music?

[Faridah] Since the Circuit Breaker period, I had already been in the business network called “Leave a Legacy” and the offshoot team named “Feminine Leadership”.

These platforms which attract both local and international entrepreneurs give me the impetus to develop my music business and angklung music program, incorporating or promoting health and wellness.

[Azimah] Question #5

What is your new angklung program?

What will be your target market(s) and why?

[Faridah]

Well, my specific target markets or my program would be Angklung at Home or Angklung for The Family

(1) Current / former angklung students (not just my own) who want to be more engaged in angklung music-making, expand their musical skills and become expert solo players.

(2) Parents who want to introduce not just music to their young children but ethnic music / music of South-east Asia / imbibe in them an appreciation for traditional music.

(3) Human Resources and Company Recreation Heads. Angklung for Health and Wellness will help in these areas (both face-to-face and virtual training)

  1. Personal Confidence & New skills development
  2. Team-bonding and Team-management via music ensemble
  3. Leadership and Creative Skills
  4. Basically, to engage in a cultural activity

[Azimah] Great plans, Miss Faridah!

[Syazana] So exciting!

[Azimah] We hope you’ve enjoyed the final episode of Occupational Wellness with Faridah Jamal in segment two…

[Syazana] …which is also the season finale of the podcast.

[Azimah, Syazana] Till we meet again in the new season! Bye! Woohoo! Woohoo!

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] You are listening to the Intellectual Wellness for Kids series of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

We hope that this new series will spark an interest in young children to read books at a very young age and nurture them to become readers for life as well as boost their intellectual wellness.

Just so you know, we will only be reading 5% - 9% of each selected on this podcast as an introduction to the book.

In this second episode of this series, we’ve picked another non-fiction children’s book entitled “Adam Healing Adventures: From Sickness to Health”.

This book is written by Madiha Saeed, MD. This book is illustrated by Anna Cunningham and the publisher is Black Rose Writing.

Our book reader for this series is none other than…Azimah! Yeayyy!

Take it away, Azimah…

[Azimah] Assalamu’alaikum

everyone!

Today, we’re going to read the book “Adam’s Healing Adventures: From Sickness to Health”...

[Azimah] Reads pages 1-3 of the book.

[Azimah] The end.

[Syazana] Thank you so much, Azimah. That was a really good attempt! Bravo!

Now, let’s do a quick review of the book. I have three questions for you…

[Syazana] What is the book about?

[Azimah] The book is about a boy, Adam, who has asthma. And he has eczema and he has allergies. This story is about taking care of our health and being healthy all the time.

[Syazana] So, what did you like most about the book?

[Azimah] I like the pictures. I like the words.

[Syazana] Would you recommend this book to others?

[Azimah] Yes! I would recommend this book to others so that the other people can read it to the kids; and they might find the story interesting, if they read, there’s something new, maybe they’ll like it.

[Syazana] Thank you again, Azimah!

Till we meet again in the next episode…bye!

Hello! Holã!

[Intro to Segment I]

ARE YOU READY to listen to inspirational stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility from multicultural families and special needs communities? Sit back, relax and be inspired by the awesome people that we highlight in the first segment of the podcast…

Segment I | Traditional Archers Singapore

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] You are listening to the 33rd episode of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

[Azimah] In Segment One of the previous episode, we shared our experience trying out archery for the first time!

[Syazana] We had so much fun with Coach Farah of Traditional Archers Singapore! We were so curious to know what motivated Coach Farah’s husband, Alfyan Ariff, to establish traditional archery in modern Singapore and why traditional archery is a great sport for families…

[Azimah] Yeah!

[Syazana, Azimah] So, let’s move on to our interview with Traditional Archers Singapore and welcome its founder, Alfyan Ariff! Woohoo!

[Syazana] May peace be upon you! What’s the first question for Brother Alfyan, Azimah?

[Azimah] Question #1: What inspired you to establish Traditional Archers Singapore?

[Alfyan] We were inspired by traditional games and also sunnah (the way of life of Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him, and legal precedent) games which were not highlighted in the community in Singapore.

Traditional archery is one of the highly recommended games in Islam. We know that we have MODERN archery all around the world and in Singapore especially but because there is no TRADITIONAL archery in Singapore, I began to search for it through(out) the region. Then I found my teacher who is in Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia, and I started from there.

In the community itself, we are known to highlight more on modern society, modern technology. So, this really inspires me, more to actually pick up traditional archery. Traditional archery comes with traditional learning.

Traditional learning is more of how we have to really be with the teacher. How I started is not entirely starting with archery itself but then, to wake up early, 4:30 in the morning to do my Tahajjud (night prayers), my najat, my all the other sunnah prayers. I started to do that at least maybe about one month before my teacher actually started to teach archery itself.

I had to do some other work like doing cucuk tanam or doing some plant(ing) work and do some other work (which) I thought was not related to archery like pulling bands. It was quite tough because it is the testing of our ego, our patience. At least about six to nine (6-9) months, I had to go through all that before the traditional archery learning actually starts.

The beautiful thing about this is that it actually lifted my own spirituality and my focus even before the archery program starts. Through the traditional archery learning, what I discovered was...there was actually a batch of Malay army that was actually part of the (Sultan) Fateh’s conquest of Constantinople or conquest of Istanbul.

Although this is not known by many people, we have seen murals which is in Romania where the first line of the army is Malay men with tanjak (traditional headgear worn by Malay boys/men).

I have an archer friend in Romania, so I asked him about these specific murals which is said to be on the churches of Romania. So, he confirmed with me on the mural and that confirmed the fact that there’s existence of the Malay army, the Malay regimen actually, in Sultan Al-Fateh’s army.

[Syazana] Hmmm…so Brother Alfyan founded Traditional Archers Singapore out of his LOVE for this sunnah sport and wanting to do his bit for SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY so as to preserve this sport from disappearing in modern Singapore.

Okay! Let’s move on to the second question…

[Azimah] Question #2: Why do you recommend archery as a sport for both Muslims and people of other faith?

[Alfyan] As we know, Nusantara itself is one of the earliest civilizations in the world, so it is sad to say in the community now there is no highlight or nothing has been brought up about traditional or instinctive way of hunting because through modernization, we have lost touch of all these.

Benefits of traditional archery

In our programs, traditional archery enhances the instinctive features of a person which is already in that person. Traditional archery is more on yourself, enhancing your capabilities rather than depending on the equipment(s).

But for traditional archery, you know, you have a bow and then you have (an) arrow. So, the main focus in traditional archery is to use your instinct or mata hati they called it in Malay.

In traditional archery also, we have features like walking while shooting or jumping while shooting. So, these actually help in your hand and mind coordination or (hand) mind and body coordination unlike rifles, you know. I mean it’s very hard to see unless you’re really in the army, then you get to walk and shoot.

As a recreational sport, in traditional archery, we can walk and shoot, jump and shoot. Then we also have running over obstacles and shoot. So, these are the ones that (actually) help you advance your instinctive features.

International competitions

[Alfyan] International competitions in traditional archery:

We have games like for example in Hungary, we have three different settings of completion.

The first day, we had a forest setting which is like hunting. They have 3D targets of bears or pigeons which are hidden but then we don’t know the actual distance of that target(s). So, it is how well you understand your bows and arrows.

Another example of setting is we shoot from the tower of a castle. We have never experienced that before in Singapore. So, in Hungary, this is what I experienced. At a height of maybe seven storeys and then shooting down. The target is directly down, and we have to do stances called Jamarkee, which is an example of shooting down the well during the war times or shooting down the castle walls where the enemy soldiers are climbing up the castle on the walls and then those archers on the walls shooting downwards. So, it’s not a straightforward shooting.

And then, we also have, like I said earlier, dynamic runs where we have to run to a certain station and while panting, we have to calm ourselves down to shoot certain targets and then run again.

Like for example in Malaysia, we did this competition called The Spartan Archery where we have to run at least 400 meters.

I myself seldom jog; you know. But then, at the end of that competition, my legs were really stressed, I couldn’t move my legs! So, I was just lying down...

My archer friends were like “Ohhh! Relax! Relax!”

I had to calm down my legs, they were really stiff at that point of time.

This is the kind of experience we joined traditional archery for.

[Azimah] Bravo!

~ End of Segment I ~

Coming up next…

In the second segment of the podcast, we’ll learn about productivity and the nine dimensions of wellness—physical, emotional, environmental, spiritual, social, intellectual, mental, occupational and financial wellness—so we can survive and thrive in this unpredictable world.

Segment II | Occupational Wellness with Artist-Entrepreneur Faridah Jamal III

[Azimah, Syazana] Welcome back to segment two of the show!

Today is the third part of the Occupational Wellness with…

Miss Faridah Jamal from Singapore…woohoo!

[Syazana] Hello, Miss Faridah!

[Faridah] Hello! Hello, world!

[Syazana] What’s our next question for Miss Faridah, Azimah?

[Azimah, Syazana] Question #3A:

During the start of COVID-19 in 2020, did your work shift to online, work from home or remote?

During the start of COVID-19 in 2020, did your work shift to online, work from home or remote?

[Faridah] Yes, it did. At first there was a total lull between Mid-March till end of June 2020. It definitely affected my income from angklung teaching. It was for a while, quite a good time to spend at home, to do things that I never got to do. We were lucky that in Singapore, we could still go out to shop for groceries and food within our neighborhood; and to get other essential services. It was certainly very boring not to have any actual work done in schools, and definitely no performances nor social and performing arts events to attend to or to conduct. Being a very hands-on musician and music instructor/teacher, I was not very adept at Infocomm and Technology (ICT). This was a good impetus for me to learn to manage digital work and the basic equipment necessary for online work, including meetings and webinars for various interests.

[Azimah, Syazana] How long was Singapore on lockdown?

How did you come to terms with having to stay at home, quarantine, practice social distancing or no overseas travel?

[Faridah] The “circuit breaker” (partial lockdown in Singapore) pushed me to have more online communication with all my contacts. Over time, we actually enjoyed Zoom sessions as it meant we could reach out to the larger audience and global platform without spending time and money for actual traveling.

At the same time, like all others, I certainly miss traveling particularly for the Hari Raya celebrations in Malaysia – my mother and I used to go up north to spend the holidays with my brother and his family, and other relatives who live in Kuala Lumpur.

I had to cancel my business trip to Indonesia and instead order my angklung instruments to be shipped to me or the schools. The pause in leisure travel, which would usually include spa and massage sessions was definitely a snag in my joy.

I spent more time walking and exercising in the neighborhood parks. I suffered too, for a while, when swimming was not allowed.

From July onwards, after the opening of Phase 1, instructors and coaches could begin our online teaching with our students; after the academic teachers had had their first experience. It helped us to reconnect with our students and colleagues. It made us rethink our teaching methodologies and to be digitally resourceful and creative.

From August, too, many Singaporeans had started attending or conducting face-to-face events and training with restrictions in the number of participants. This was definite for us.

I attended a course in safety in food-handling which was compulsory for all volunteers wishing to serve the community – I joined the Lions of Singapore in a nationwide cookie-baking and then mooncake making for the elderly.

In November, the Ministry of Health relaxed the restrictions a little for the Ministry of Education, thus school activities could return to normal, while enforcing the regulations like compulsory mask-wearing, safe entry and social distancing. This definitely gave us much relief. It was so good to be back to work again and carry out lessons and co-curricular activities.

[Syazana] Oh! I feel you…

Alhamdulillah, the Singapore government has finally made many new changes in late 2021 and with recent changes, Singapore has returned to almost like pre-COVID times. People are now allowed to gather again in larger groups. And no more PCR or ART tests for travelers coming to Singapore. Yeayyy!

Now, what’s the next question, Azimah?

[Azimah] Question #3B:

What are you doing to make sure that you and your family members are staying healthy and engaged throughout the years?

[Faridah] We practice heightened personal hygiene, partake in regular exercise and consume more warm water and healthy food. We took advantage of the opening of nature reserves, beaches and restaurants and started going to these places at least once a week for our family getaway, and thus regained a good level of sanity and normalcy. We could receive visitors to our home according to the fixed number allowed: five (5), and then eight (8), thus it was very good for my mother and my relatives for that very important family reconnection.

[Syazana] Wow! I love what you did!

What’s next, Azimah?

[Azimah] Next. Question #3C:

Despite all the anxiety and confusion in an unpredictable world, how are you and your family moving forward and giving back to your community?

[Faridah] I am blessed to still be able to hold on to my career and work for schools. Like many others who had a big cut or loss in our salaries earlier, I later received the government’s help of a fixed, advanced salary. This gave me the golden opportunity to continue teaching my students and more importantly, to prepare them for 2021 and the Singapore Youth Festival.

My involvement with the Rotary Club of Kampong Gelam (RCKG) is also inspiring me to spur on connecting with the different levels of community. At the moment my team is initiating service to the “DOT” – Daughters of Tomorrow – an NGO working for the betterment of women who are marginalized or going through a very challenging time.

[Azimah, Syazana] How exciting! Yeah!

Stay tuned to the next episode…for the concluding episode of Occupational Wellness with Faridah Jamal. Woohoo!Woohoo!

Hello! Holã!

[Intro to Segment I]

ARE YOU READY to listen to inspirational stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility from multicultural families and special needs communities? Sit back, relax and be inspired by the awesome people that we highlight in the first segment of the podcast…

Segment I | Archery in Singapore

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] You are listening to the 32nd episode of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

[BGM] Jet plane

[Azimah, Syazana] In Segment One last week, we shared about hiking in  Singapore at the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve… with my former colleague turned good friend, Noor.

[Syazana] Going out on that hiking trip plus lunch together was a great example of the mutual trust, respect, acceptance, integrity and love we had in our friendship which began in 1998! That’s 24 years and counting…

[Azimah] Mashaa Allah! How amazing!

[Syazana] Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah SWT.

So, Azimah, what activity shall we highlight in this episode?

[Azimah] How about Archery?!!

[Syazana] Whoa! Excellent choice!

For the past four years, Azimah has been watching Turkish movies and drama series where the actors and actresses used bows and arrows for hunting and in battle fields. She’s been asking for a lesson in archery for so long!

[Azimah, Azfar] Yeah! Yup, I know…

[Syazana] Azfar and I wanna make you feel respected, accepted and loved! Afterall, Respect, Acceptance and Love are three of the six family values in the T.R.A.I.L.S. acronym.

So, during our recent home trip to Singapore in February, Azfar and I found some time to shoot arrows with Azimah at the Traditional Archers Singapore (TAS) located in Punggol.

[Azimah] Awww! I’m so touched! Huggy!

[Syazana] Since 2011, TAS exists to rediscover and revive traditional Asiatic archery in Singapore. They organise meet and greet sessions, conduct formal courses and offer competitive coaching for pathways to traditional archery festivals worldwide.

Now Azimah: Tell us about your experience shooting arrows there.

[Azimah] First of all, we had a funny, cute and friendly coach. Her name is Farah. I want to thank sister Farah for coaching us! Woohoo!

[Syazana] Yeah! I agree 💯 percent. Coach Farah is the sister to our podcast guest speaker and fitness guru, Coach Zarina, from NYC.

[Azimah, Syazana] Big thanks to Coach Zarina for connecting us to Coach Farah! Yeayyy!

[Syazana] Next, what skills and knowledge did you gain from the 1-hour archery lesson?

[Azimah] I learned a few things in archery. In this episode, I wanna share that I learned how to string the bow properly, how to pull the arrow correctly and how to shoot the arrows and aim at the target.

[Syazana] Hmmm…I remembered that we all learned to be patient when we were trying to pick up a new skill and acquire new knowledge in archery.

[Azimah] Okay, let’s listen to the audio recordings…

Woohoo! Enjoy!

[Audio Recording #1, #2 and #3]

[Syazana] So, Azimah: Did you feel happy that your dream to take a lesson in archery finally came true?

[Azimah] Of course! Thank you! Muah! Muah!

[Azimah, Syazana] Did you know that you can show your support for the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast by shopping at our online shop?

…and listen to stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility.

Segment II | Occupational Wellness With Artist-Entrepreneur Faridah Jamal II

[Azimah, Syazana] Welcome back to segment two of the show!

Today is the second part of the Occupational Wellness with…

Miss Faridah Jamal from Singapore…woohoo!

[Syazana] Hello, Miss Faridah!

[Faridah] Hello, world! Thank you for inviting me.

[Syazana] Hey, Azimah! What’s the next question for Miss Faridah, The Angklung Queen of Singapore?

[Azimah] Question #2A

Which of the nine dimensions of wellness have the greatest impact on you?

[Faridah] Among the nine dimensions of wellness, those that have the greatest impact on me are:

1) Physical

2) Emotional

3) Intellectual

4) Social and Cultural

[Azimah] Question #2B

How does your passion for traditional musical instruments like Angklung and other percussion promote wellness for you and your students?

[Faridah] Firstly, as an educator, I must be physically fit and be conscious of my health and fitness.

This gives me the confidence to be present at every or almost every training session.

Playing these instruments, in fact, any instrument, requires some level of physical fitness, agility and adaptability.

[Syazana] How true that is!

[Faridah] Every session, I will apply the basic workouts that are relevant to their instrumental skills development.

Within at least two months of learning any of these instruments, my students would be able to demonstrate some acceptable level of skills and adaptability.

[Azimah] Woohoo! Super!

[Faridah] Cultural Wellness is the next arena and definitely a must in teaching and learning traditional music.

[Azimah] Ooh! That is something new that I learned today!

[Faridah] I share my knowledge and passion in my own Malay and Indonesian language, culture, history and music, and explain the important nuances which identify that particular music or culture.

[Azimah] How exciting!

[Faridah] I also give my students the advantage of sharing their own ethnic culture and interests in other cultures and music to highlight the differences or similarities.

[Azimah] That’s fantastic!

[Azimah, Syazana] To find out more about Miss Faridah and her career as a performing artist-entrepreneur…

Stay tuned to the next episode! Woohoo!

Hello! Holã!

We hope that this new series will spark an interest in young children to read books at a very young age, nurture them to become readers for life as well as boost their intellectual wellness.

Just so you know, we will only be reading five (5) to nine (9) percent of each selected book on this podcast as an introduction to the book.

In the first episode of this series, we’ve picked a book from “Celebrate the World” series by the publisher, Little Simon, entitled “Ramadan”. It is written by author Hannah Eliot and illustrated by Rashin.

Our book reader for this series is none other than…Azimah! Yeayyy! Take it away, Azimah…

[Azimah] Assalamu’alaikum (May peace be upon you) everyone. So, today we’re going to read a book called “Ramadan”.

[Book reading by Azimah.]

[Azimah] The end.

[Syazana] Thank you so much, Azimah! That was a really good attempt! Bravo!

So, what did you LIKE most about the book?

[Azimah] I like the book, the pictures and what it means to us as Muslims. We help with charity, zakat (alms), sadaqah (donation for the needy and poor) and we pray Taraweeh (special night prayer in Ramadan).

[Azfar] Surah Al-Fateha (Verse 1-3 from The Holy Quran recited in Taraweeh Prayer with extended families in Singapore.)

[Syazana] We hope that you will check out the book in the public libraries or better still, proceed to purchase the book.

Hey! If you have not listened to our Ramadan series released in 2021 last year, you might like to check it out on our website. You'll hear stories of respect, acceptance and love in Segment I of Episode 15, 16, 17 and 18.

Till we meet again in the next episode…bye!

Segment II | Occupational Wellness with Artist-Entrepreneur Faridah Jamal

[Azimah] Welcome to segment two of the show!

[Syazana] Let’s give a shout out to…

[Azimah]…our new special guest, Miss Faridah Jamal from Singapore…woohoo!

[Syazana] Hello, Miss Faridah! May peace be upon you!

[Faridah] Hello, world! Thank you for inviting me.

[Syazana] Can you guess when was the very first time I met Miss Faridah, The Angklung Queen of Singapore?

[Azimah] Hmmm…At Raffles Girls’ Secondary School, right!

[Syazana] You’re right, Azimah! Back then I was only 13 years old. My best friend, Norain, and I joined the school’s Angklung Orchestra as a Co-Curricular Activity (CCA). Angklung is a musical instrument made of bamboo and has its origin from Indonesia. Miss Faridah was the pioneer Angklung Instructor back then and she is still teaching at RGS and many other schools too. Under her expertise, RGS and many schools had won awards. I recalled that we won a Distinction Award in the Singapore Youth Festival in 1987.

[Azimah] Wow! Woohoo!

[Syazana] We were so lucky to get a chance to meet Miss Faridah during our recent home trip last February. We met at Far East Plaza at Orchard Road and went to ABC restaurant. I remembered I had a famous Indian dish called “Mee Kuah” which is noodles in red gravy.

[Azimah] Aha, yes! I remembered that!

[Syazana] Now, let’s get to the first question for Miss Faridah today…

[Azimah] Question #1

Tell us about who you are and what you love to do in your professional and personal life.

[Faridah] My name is Faridah Jamal. I am a Singaporean with an Indonesian heritage. I am the Founder-Director of Ethnique Musique Connections; Angklung music instructor/conductor and arranger/composer.

I have always loved to teach. My two major loves are the English Language (EL) and Performing Arts (Music and Drama). I graduated with a Bachelor of Education (TESL – Teaching of English as a Second Language) from the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia in 1990, with the hope of teaching English in Malaysia, as there was a great need for EL teachers there. After graduation, however, I decided to return to Singapore to serve as Creative Writer and then, Senior Editor and Head of Art and Editorial Department of the Bookworm Consultants Pte Ltd, working on fiction and non-fiction works for children. Meanwhile, I was teaching angklung part-time on Saturdays in my alma mater, Raffles Girls’ Secondary School.

[Syazana] In case you’ve never heard of it, Angklungs are Indonesian bamboo rattles.

[Faridah] The realization that there was not a single full-time angklung music instructor in Singapore and the passion in this unique art pushed me to carve a totally new career for myself to serve schools and the community.

[Syazana] Ooh!

[Faridah] Thus, in 1993, I became the pioneer in Angklung music-teaching, helping schools to establish angklung ensembles, to develop my own brand of angklung-teaching methodology and music resources as well as to train new instructors. In 2003, I established my business entity: Ethnique Musique Connections to formalize my music business.

[Syazana] Wow! I know from experience that it takes a lot of courage for anyone to start his or her own business. In case you’re curious to know about Angklung, you can listen to some of the Angklung Ensemble performances by schools taught by Miss Faridah Jamal on YouTube.

Check out this link to listen to two famous Indonesian songs, Dayung Sampan and Lenggang Kangkong conducted by her during a performance by the Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (Primary) at https://youtu.be/k4xjnE7WxzQ. Enjoy!

[Azimah] How about your personal life, Miss Faridah?

[Faridah] In my personal life, I continue with my music interest: listening to various musical genres, sourcing for musical ideas and music scores, arranging others’ works and composing new music.

I love physical activities and the outdoors too. I swim at least once a week, go to the gym or do my fitness work at home and in the parks; as well as walking and hiking. Being in tune with nature is most

therapeutic, inspiring and rejuvenating.

I also love attending performing arts events, especially to support my friends’ performances or productions and to learn from international performers.

As one of the charter members of the Rotary Club of Kampong Gelam (RCKG) and the Community Service Chair, I am happy working with my fellow Rotarians to serve the community in various ways.

[Syazana] Hmmm… I think you have such an exciting personal and professional life, Miss Faridah!

[Azimah] Awesome! Bravo! Woohoo!

[Syazana] Do you know what I love most about her?

[Azimah] Hmmm…Her smile?

[Syazana] More than her genuine smile, I love her warm, bubbly personality and the way she taught us: firm yet kind!

[Azimah] Yeah! She is kind with compliments too! I remembered when we were chatting over lunch, Miss Faridah said: “Azimah, you asked a very smart question!”

[Syazana] Oh yeah! I was so delighted to hear that! It means so much coming from her! It makes special needs teens like Azimah feel more confident of herself!

[Azimah, Syazana] To find out more about Miss Faridah and her career as a performing artist-entrepreneur…

Stay tuned to the next episode! Woohoo!

[Intro to Segment I]

ARE YOU READY to listen to inspirational stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility from multicultural families and special needs communities? Sit back, relax and be inspired by the awesome people that we highlight in the first segment of the podcast…

Segment I | Home Trip to Singapore

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] We’re still in the first season of the podcast and hey, you are listening to the 30th episode of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

We’re back in our new mini studio in Ballston Lake, New York and we’ve said goodbye to the cold, winter weather and welcomed the warmer spring!

[BGM] Jet plane

Did you know that we took a 5-week break in late January to February 2022 to go on a home trip to Singapore? We’re so grateful to be reunited with our one and only boy turned firefighter, Azfar, who is also our podcast co-host.

So Azimah: Did you enjoy our trip back home?

[Azimah] Of course! It was a blast!

[Syazana] To all our listeners: Did you travel overseas during COVID-19 when most borders are now open?

If so, why not share your experiences traveling during the global health pandemic on our podcast?

[Azimah] To continue with our 1st year anniversary celebration, TWO entries from the U.S. will each receive a $20 Hannaford Supermarket Gift Card.

And another TWO winners from Singapore will receive a mystery gift worth $20.

[Syazana] Send your travel story with your NAME, MAILING ADDRESS plus an AUDIO file recorded via Voice Memo or Voice Note OR TEXT to our email: HELLO@ASKTRIOWELLO.COM.

You could also send a DM or PM to our Instagram, Facebook or Twitter accounts @ASKtrioWello by April 15th, 2022.

We had a fabulous time during our home trip to Singapore.

So in this segment, we’d like to show some love and promote social responsibility by coming up with a summary of travel tips to keep in mind if you’re planning to go to Singapore…

[Azimah, Syazana] Okay! Here we go…

  1. Check out for the latest updates on COVID-19 regulations in Singapore regularly. What we went through at the Immigration Checks in January to February 2022 might likely be different in the coming months;
  2. Book a Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) flight ticket with world class airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, ANA as EARLY as possible to get better fares, seats and especially to avoid being quarantined upon arrival in Singapore;
  3. Get ALL travel-related paperwork done BEFORE your flight departure and get it ready in a handy file. Download the Trace Together app and the HealthHub app as these apps will be useful when you want to visit places that require proof of your vaccination status and for contact tracing purposes;
  4. Get your PCR/ART (SWAB) test done according to the current requirement at least within 24 hours BEFORE your departure and upon arrival in Singapore;
  5.  Check for weather forecasts and prepare for possible flight cancellation such as snowstorms and others;
  6. Pack your luggage several days BEFORE your flight departure and not at the last minute. Make sure that you weigh all your luggage for check-in and hand carry so that it does NOT exceed the weight limit. For hand carry luggage, do not bring any liquid or prepare a Checklist so that you do NOT miss any items that you want to bring along such as passport, Green Card or Visa, vaccination certificates, wallet, neck pillow, pens, a set of clothing for change, medication or vitamins etcetera;
  7. Check-in to your flight online wherever possible and at the counter at least THREE hours before your flight departure;
  8. Put on your mask at the airports and on the plane except during meal times;
  9. Upon arrival at Changi Airport, check for relevant information regarding any PCR/ART test requirement. In January 2022, travelers were required to pre-book a PCR test to be taken upon arrival at Changi Airport before the flight departure to Singapore.
  10. If you plan to visit Singapore and stay for more than 30 days, you might want to get your vaccination records ingested into the National Immunization Registry. So, you’ll have to go for a serology test at a clinic that can assist you with this. Many requirements have changed or had been lifted recently so check back on the latest requirements with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on their website at www.ica.gov.sg.

[Syazana] Now, let’s move on to your travel stories. What did you like most about your home trip, Azimah?

[Azimah] Hmmm…the best part of the trip was to spend quality time with my one and only brother, Azfar, my grandpa, my uncles and aunts as well as other relatives and close friends.

[Syazana] Yeah! We’ve not been back in Singapore since the first quarter of 2020 and two years is a long time so we had lots to catch up with our loved ones.

[Azimah] Let’s listen to a few outdoor recordings that we managed to do while we were in Singapore!

[Syazana] Yup! In this episode, you’ll hear about the various modes of transport that we took to reach Singapore, especially public transportation such as the plane ride, subway or MRT train rides and bus rides.

You’ll also find out about our dining adventures in this episode.

In the next few episodes, you’ll hear about places of attractions in Singapore that are fun and exciting from Bukit Timah Nature Reserve for hiking, to Gardens By The Bay in Marina, East Coast Park, Changi Village.

[Azimah] Plus bowling and a lesson in traditional archery…

[Syazana] …with the Singapore Traditional Archers which was inspired by the excellent archery club inherited from the Ottoman Empire in Turkey.

[Azimah] Woohoo! Enjoy!

[Audio Recording]

[Syazana, Azimah] Before we end segment one, we’d like to invite you again to support the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast by shopping at our NEW online shop!

Check out ASKtrioWello Shop: Apparel for Women and Kids in America at https://asktriowello.shop.social. Free shipping for delivery in the U.S.A. for any orders above $59.

[Azimah, Azfar, Syazana] Stay tuned to segment one in the next episode…

[Azfar] …and listen to stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility.

Segment II | Occupational Wellness With Author-Publisher Hidayah Amin IV

[Azimah] Welcome to segment two of the show! Today is the last and final episode on Occupational Wellness with Hidayah Amin!

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast!

[Hidayah] Thank you!

[Syazana] In the last episode, Hidayah had shared the stories behind her children’s books.

Azimah, we mentioned that you should talk about the books you’ve read and share any learning points with our listeners, right?

[Azimah] Yeah, sure!

[Syazana] While we were in Singapore, we managed to visit Wardah Books, a bookstore located in the historic Kampong Glam that sells many books written by Hidayah Amin.

So, we bought several books including the book on Malay Kuih and the children’s book inspired by Singapore’s legendary tales, the Malay Annals.

In the future, we plan to have a new series on Heritage: Traditional cakes, cookies and desserts as well as a Read & Review series for children.

But that’s for our future episodes and we will restructure our podcast episodes into shorter durations and series format.

But now, let’s hear from Hidayah Amin on what advice she has for teens and parents in helping teens pursue their dream careers or jobs.

Take it away, Hidayah!

[Hidayah] For those who are keen to learn writing or want to become an author-entrepreneur or to even want to be in the publishing industry, what advice would I give?

Tip #1 Be very clear about your intentions and purpose

First you need to be very clear why you’re doing this.

I can only advise you based on my experience because I was rejected. And I was determined to have my story out because I know how important my book is…I mean, the Gedung Kuning book.

Even now after what I’ve gone through, if I had to go through it again, I will go through again because I see the importance, right. So, you need to be very clear about your intentions: Why are you doing this?

Do you want to do this because you think you want to be the next J. K. Rowling?

Do you think you’ll make lots of money? So if you’re going in for the money, you’ll be disappointed. Even J. K. Rowling was poor for many, many years, struggling when she was writing. You know, you’ll face rejections and all that.

But I think the first thing you need to ask yourself honestly:

Why do you want to be a writer?

Or if you want to be like me: Set up my own publishing company? Then you see there’s also the business aspect you need to think about.

It’s not easy: you need to ask yourself really, really honestly and sincerely why you want to do this.

If you want to do this for money, I will tell you to forget it. If you want to do it for fame, nobody is gonna care, nobody will know you. There’ll be lots of wannabe writers. You need to know what sets you apart from them.

So because I have to take care of my father at home, it gives me the flexibility to be my own boss. I can arrange my own time so that I can take my father for his medical appointments and all that. That’s why I’m also doing this…partly.

My great grandfather was very successful. I actually asked my grandmother:

What are the secrets to his (my grandfather) success?

So I’m sharing this with you and I’m also trying to emulate (him).

Tip #2: Try NOT to be in debt

He said: You try NOT to be in debt. Don’t have debts. If you cannot afford it, you don't do it; you wait!

He paid, for Gedung Kuning in 1912, cash SGD$37,000. That’s a few millions in today’s world. Because you know during that time in 1912 there was no bank loan and all that.

So he said “Try not to be in debt because if you don’t have debts, at least you can live. If you have debts and you don’t have a job, how are you going to pay for all these?”

If I don’t have enough resources, I don’t do it first. It’s okay, I’m not in a rush.

Why are you in a rush? You have to ask yourself that, okay! Don’t be in debt.

Tip #3 Be ethical in your dealings

You need to be ethical in your dealings.

My great grandfather paid his staff well. In fact, when I did the interview for my book, right, when they knew who my great grandfather was, they were so respectful because my great grandfather treated their family or those who work with them well. So you need to be ethical. You need to pay your staff well. You need to treat people well. Be ethical in your dealings.

Tip #4 Have integrity

To me, the most important value—the six values of T.R.A.I.L.S. (Trust. Respect. Acceptance. Integrity. Love. Social responsibility) is INTEGRITY. You need to have integrity.

You know my great grandfather? If you read the Gedung Kuning book, there are people who stole his designs and made their own belts!

During that time, there was no trademark logo, patent or whatever. So how did he deal with these people? So things like these, you must have that integrity (again).

Ah yeah! The other thing my grandmother said, my great grandfather told her that if you want to start your business, you have to tell yourself that you’re willing to be poor for the next five (5) years.

If you think you’re ready, if you think you can handle being poor for the first five years of your business life, then you go for it.

If you think you cannot hack it, then forget it!

So, when I really rehash or rebuild Helang Books, I told myself:

Look! I don’t think I’m gonna make money. I asked myself: Am I prepared to be poor for the next five (5) years? Am I willing? And the answer is YES. So, during that five (5) years, (you know) when I did all my books, and (you know) I said “It’s okay if the books don’t sell but we must ensure there is a certain standard, you must do the branding well because these things are important. (These books) It has a message.

Tip #5: Know the importance of showing emotional support (for parents)

As parents, you may not agree with your children’s decision but you know, if your children managed to convince you that they are doing the right thing, I think you should give them emotional support.

And if, even if they fail, please do not say “I told you so.”

Just your emotional support, being there for them means so much!

Like my family, they will come. They will all come, they will sit there and they will support. They will even buy my books!

I said “Don’t need to buy; I will give it to you.”

They said “No, no, no! We want to support (you)!”

So I think it means a lot!

Tip #6: Don’t compete with anybody but yourself

Don’t compete with anybody please! My advice to you is don’t compete with other people. You compete with yourself. That’s all. And this is not a 100m dash. This is a marathon. Life is a journey. When we are born, we don’t automatically run. You crawl first and then you run. It’s okay. Take your time.

Tip #7: Remember the THREE basic rules (IIP)

You know I tell my students:

You can do whatever you like as long as it is not (i) illegal, (ii) immoral, (iii) against any religious belief, against your principles. You just do it. So these three (3).

Go for it!

[Azimah] That is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing your stories and your useful advice on occupational wellness, Hidayah!

Stay tuned to the next episode…

Segment II | Occupational Wellness With Author-Publisher Hidayah Amin IV

[Azimah] Now it’s time to welcome our special guest...Author-Publisher...Hidayah Amin.

[Azfar] Welcome to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast!

[Syazana] Welcome to segment two of the show on Occupational Wellness with Hidayah Amin!

[Hidayah] Thank you!

[Syazana] In the last episode, Hidayah had talked about

the non-fiction books published by Helang Books. Azimah, let’s move on to the next question for Hidayah…

[Azimah] Hi, Hidayah! Can you tell us more about the stories behind the children’s books that you published?

[Syazana] Yeah! We’ve heard about The Mango Tree, The Cure..

[BGM] Sounds of Nature/Tweets

[Hidayah] So I did not like the Mango Tree, Minah Meets Cambridge.  Minah Meets Cambridge is basically about my journey,  experience as a Malay girl—a Malay girl from Singapore who studied at Cambridge University. So I wanted to write about my experience but it’s in a whimsical, imaginative adventure to inspire other girls, you know, to aim high and go for their dreams.

The other books I did is the “Little Kids, Big Ideas”.

That is an inclusive book where we incorporate braille and tactile and of course the fonts that we use are suitable for people with dyslexia. In fact I think I’m the first author, the first publisher, to use this.

We approached the designer of this font, we actually called Holland and, you know,  we talked to him and we said “Hey! We would like to use your font!”, you know, and he said “Okay.”

I’m proud to say that we explored, we are the first publisher to explore it and to come out with this inclusive book which no other publisher in Singapore do it because

#1 It’s expensive!

#2 There’s no market and nobody could be bothered to help come out (with) inclusive books where the blind and people with all abilities or disabilities can read together.

We have three titles:

  1. Hang Nadim and the Garfish
  2. Sir Maguang and the Giant Jar
  3. Siti Wan Kembang: That’s about an orphan princess from Kelantan, who later on became the queen of Kelantan.

These are series that actually tell kids that they may be little but their ideas matter. You know even (though) they are little kids, they have big ideas.

[Azimah] Oh wow!

[Hidayah] And of course we have The Rain Tree.

The Rain Tree was written by my editor actually because she was inspired after reading my Mango Tree.

So, The Rain Tree…because Singapore has lots of rain trees and this tree planting campaign…

Because like I said, I love gardening, I love the environment, I love trees.

[Azimah] I mentioned before that I’ve read the book, My Name is Mikail. I have Cerebral Palsy.

[Syazana] I think that book was from the I Am Unique series.

[Hidayah] The other pride and joy is the I Am Unique Series. It’s about kids with disabilities, special needs kids.

[Azimah] Woohoo!

[Hidayah] I think they are forgotten in Singapore or they’re hidden somewhere, nobody sees them.

It started three years ago with the book, My Name is Nadia. I have autism. It’s actually bilingual. I got to know a friend of my brothers who have special needs kids. In fact, she has four kids and all four are special needs.

You think you’re unfortunate but then again, there are people with worse off condition.

We recently launched, in conjunction with World Down Syndrome Day, My Name is Alicia. I have down syndrome, also based on a real child.

And I didn’t even think about this series to go on and then somehow it kinda snowballed and people got to know about it.

[Azimah, Syazana] Oh wow! How exciting!

[Applause]

[Azimah] Woohoo! Thank you for thinking about special needs people and making us feel welcome in this world!

[Syazana] Masha’Allah! I love your sense of purpose behind your chosen career as an author publisher.

Azimah, let’s get a few of those children’s books by Helang Books for your class library.

[Azimah] Yeah! I think they’ll love it because they love to learn something new everyday and also about other cultures.

[Syazana] That’s wonderful! Special needs teens learning new things everyday…good job!

[Azimah] Thank you, Hidayah, for sharing the stories behind your children’s books.

[Syazana] Azimah loves reading books that represent her. Do you know how challenging it is to be someone like Azimah?

[Azimah, Syazana] It’s tough but I’ll survive, insha’Allah. God willing!

Azimah is a triple minority who is at a higher risk of discrimination. She is…

  1. A special needs student;
  2. Asian; and
  3. A Female Muslim.

So, let’s give her the special space to amplify her voice! Azimah: Why don’t you talk about the books you’ve read and share any learning points with our listeners, especially those who have children or teens?

[Azimah, Syazana] So stay tuned to the next episode with the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast and Hidayah Amin…woohoo! (both Azimah & Syazana).

Segment I | T.R.A.I.L.S To a New Neighborhood

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] You are listening to the 28th episode of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

[Audio recording] *T.R.A.I.L.S. to a new neighborhood

*{[Azimah] It’s a beautiful day in Ballston Lake, NY. It’s kind of like the olden days…we get to see the trees, there’s no cars back then.

[Syazana] Hey! Look! There are so many birds up here in the tree.

[Azimah] Hi! Birdie!

[Syazana] It’s a great Sunday to go for a walk.

[Azimah] Yeah! Wellness walks…

[Azimah] It’s just very pretty, right Ummi?

[Syazana] Yeah, it is. It’s always pretty to be close to nature.

[Azimah] Yeah! Well, let’s…

[Syazana] Let’s continue with our wellness walk…

[Azimah] Not that way…that way is mud!

[Syazana] Alright, this way then. Come! Let’s go!}

[BGM] Footsteps and tweets.

[Syazana] Breathe in…breathe out…Phew! We’ve finally…completely moved to our new house in Ballston Lake, New York. It’s surrounded by trees and nature trails as well as parks nearby for wellness walks.

We’re so grateful because our kind-hearted neighbors made us feel so welcome! Two families came knocking on our door welcoming us into the neighborhood with cookies and chocolate fudge.

[Azimah] Oh! Wow!

[Syazana] This neighborhood is blessed with mutual trust, respect, acceptance and we hope there’s integrity, love and social responsibility too. Alhamdulillah. Praise and thanks to Almighty God, Allah SWT.

[BGM] Jet plane

[Syazana] Hey! We can also hear the sounds of jet planes flying in the air. Oh! We can also hear the choo choo train passing by as we’re not too far away from the railroad or railway tracks.

[BGM] Train

[Azimah] Do you know the latest news about Azfar in Singapore?

[Syazana] I sure do! Our co-host Azfar is no longer a recruit or private at the Lifesaving Force, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). He was selected to be in the Section Commander Course known as SCC. He is now on track to become a junior Sergeant! Ai! Ai! Sergeant!

[BGM] Yes, Sir!

[Azimah] Woohoo! Bravo!

[Syazana] So proud of you, my teen superhero! May you continue to stay humble and achieve success, my boy! Here’s a recording of Azfar and his food adventure dedicated to his one and only sister, you, Azimah…

[Azimah] Ameen! Love, hugs and kisses! Muahhh!

[Syazana, Azimah] Winter break, Christmas and New Year celebrations are coming soon! Here’s wishing everyone a wonderful break and happy holidays!

Coming up next…

In the second segment of the podcast, we’ll learn about productivity and the nine dimensions of wellness—physical, emotional, environmental, spiritual, social, intellectual, mental, occupational and financial wellness—so we can survive and thrive in this unpredictable world.

Segment II | Occupational Wellness with Author-Publisher Hidayah Amin IV

[Azimah] Now it’s time to welcome our special guest...Author and Publisher...Hidayah Amin.

[Syazana] Welcome to the show again, Hidayah!

[Azfar] Welcome to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast!

[Hidayah] Thank you!

[Syazana] In the last episode, Hidayah had talked about the importance of social responsibility and why she published the book, The Cure, written by nine-year old author, Nuha.

In this episode, we want to know more about other books published by Helang Books. Now, let’s rock and roll with the question for Hidayah, Azimah…

[Azimah] Can you tell us more about the non-fiction books that you have published, Hidayah?

[BGM] Sounds of Nature/Tweets

[Hidayah] Oh! I became an author entrepreneur all partly because of (the) situation and also a lot of causes like The Mango Tree–it was in a way to heal myself. A lot of it came out because of causes. In fact, the next book after The Mango Tree, came out from a racist remark on Facebook.

The title is Malay Weddings Don’t Cost $50 and Other Facts About Malay Culture. So then later on I realized a lot of my books came out because of situations and causes. And it is more meaningful that way because we don’t just do books for the sake of doing books; we do books to educate, to correct perceptions, to give the voice to the voiceless and all that. Yeah! That’s the journey of Helang Books and of myself as an author entrepreneur.

[Azimah] That’s awesome!

[Syazana] Amazing!

[Hidayah] I write and publish non-fiction books. At the same time, I also write and publish children’s books. So, these two are very different in treatment, in seriousness, in a lot of things. It’s like really at polar ends.

Why do I write non-fiction? I started out with Gedung Kuning.

[Syazana] Oh yeah! I remembered that you mentioned about your first non-fiction book, Gedung Kuning, in episode #25 of the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast.

[Hidayah] It’s actually creative non-fiction. It is a REAL story, but I wrote it in a children’s book style. Maybe if I had gone to do the Ph.D. right, I would have been an academician. My background is one who likes to do research, who likes to correct narratives, to give an alternative perspective. So, if you look at some of the books that I’ve written, let’s say non-fiction.

As of this year, I’ve published eight titles: Gedung Kuning, Malay Weddings Don’t Cost $50, Kampong Tempe: Voices From A Malay Village. I’m all for social justice, to have a voice included. And you know where Kampung Tempe is now, it’s the most expensive area in Singapore. And if you read the book, you’ll understand how some of the villagers were actually cheated out of selling their lands.

And I also wrote a Malay Language book, Bahasa: A Guide to Malay Languages, where I compile all the Malay languages including Tagalog, that’s the Filipino language (and) because Filipinos belong to the Astronesian family which is part of the Malay, the proto Malay. And also Selita, Selita is the language of the Orang Laut or the sea nomads.

So why I started this book is because I started to rediscover and to embrace my Banjar side of the family. Before this, I used to suppress my Banjar bloodline. You know, I’m a very proud Javanese. And I think the younger generation has forgotten because I grew up in a household that spoke Malay only.

And then of course I wrote about Kampong Gelam: kampong is village and gelam is the name of the gelam tree. In fact, the so-called (this) urban village that I grew up in, it’s a historic district. To think that it’s a historic district in Singapore and there is no book written about it. So, I decided to write. In fact, from the first book Gedung Kuning. Gedung Kuning IS in Kampong Gelam. It is…the building is still there right. Kampong Gelam is a historic district, it’s preserved, designated and yet there is no book…NOTHING…about Kampong Gelam. So, I embarked on this researching on Kampung Gelam; 883-page book about Kampong Gelam called Leluhur: Singapore’s Kampong Gelam. Lelulur is a Javanese word for ancestors: your roots, where you come from.

And then of course last year, I came out with a book about Kuih (kueh) or Malay desserts, Malay cakes.

[Syazana] Ooh! Our family members love eating traditional Malay kuih (kueh). I’ve also tried making Epok-epok also known as curry puffs, Apam Balik or crepes with peanuts or sweetcorn, Nagasari or steamed bananas. I hope I’ll remember to purchase your book when I visit Singapore again. It’s exciting to know that there are 120 recipes of traditional Malay kuih (kueh) in your book!

[Hidayah] This is part of the Malay Heritage series. And again, why kuih (kueh)? Why this book about kuih? Basically, about the stories: the name of the kuih (kueh), the history of the kuih (kueh). I have 120 kuih (kuih) that I wrote. There are still more kuih (kueh), but I couldn’t take it anymore! 120 is a lot! So, I said “That’s it lah! Just stop at 120, okay!

[Syazana] Okay! So, what actually motivated you to write this book which is dedicated to traditional Malay kuih (kueh)?

If you know about Singapore, there are people who kind of claim our Malay food to be theirs. So, I’m just sick and tired of people saying “Oh! This is our food. Even the naming is wrong, the pronunciation, to make it appear non-Malay. So, I’ve decided that…you know what? I’m just going to write a book about it! So again…you can see, right?

[Azimah] Yeah!

[Syazana] Yup! Certainly!

The titles of my books are quite provocative. But hey! The best way to educate is to spread knowledge, right?

So, the next book is about the Singapore last Malay Schools (Sang Nila Utama and Tun Seri Lanang.) I was in secondary school…these schools no longer existed. One of the former principals of the schools actually came and asked me. I have done a book about a charity in Singapore. I traced this Lembaga Biasiswa Kenangan Maulud (LBKM), Prophet Muhammad Memorial Scholarship Fund which I wrote a book about it. I guessed they were impressed, and they asked whether I wanted to write this book.

This is pre-COVID; I had to go to even Malaysia, Brunei to interview the students who used to be in the schools. So, this book is very much anticipated. In fact, I think it’s very valuable. Despite the hardship that I went through, I am very, very glad that it will come to fruition. These are the non-fiction books. I have a vested interest; I feel the importance and the need for these books to be written.

[Syazana] Thank you, Hidayah, for sharing the stories behind your published books. We love your passion to educate, regenerate and elevate the community through book publishing, one book at a time, also one episode at a time on our podcast, ASK Trio About Wellness.

[Azimah] Yeah! Thank you, Hidayah!

How about your children’s books? I have read your book; My Name is Mikail. I have Cerebral Palsy. I want to know more about all your children’s books in the next episode!

[Syazana] Yeah! In the next episode, Hidayah will talk more about her children’s book including books on and for special needs people. This is absolutely exciting because we love talking about what people are doing to build an inclusive world.

[Azimah, Syazana] So stay tuned to the next episode with Hidayah Amin…woohoo!

Hello! Holã!

[Intro to Segment I]

ARE YOU READY to listen to inspirational stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility from multicultural families and special needs communities? Sit back, relax and be inspired by the awesome people that we highlight in the first segment of the podcast…

Segment I | Accepting Special Needs Friends and Cycling Adventure in Singapore

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] you are listening to the 27th episode of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

[Azimah] It’s still the fall season and we had slight snow for several days just like in winter!

[Syazana] Brrrr! We’re starting to put on our winter jackets. We’ve had a super challenging time in the past three weeks! Our small team has been reporting sick and our family is in the process of moving from our rental townhouse to our new home. We’re happy to be able to resume podcast recordings this week. Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah.

How about you, Azimah: What’s up yo!

[Azimah] Before the weather became too chilly, I had a chance to go apple picking. We went to the Indian Ladder Farm in Altamont, New York.

[Syazana] Tell us more about it, Azimah.

[Azimah] Since last September, I joined the Girls Youth Group at Al-Hidaya Center and one of the fun activities is apple picking. I’m so grateful that a special needs teen like me is accepted into the program. My special thanks to sister Aleyna, my teacher, and the mentors for making me feel so welcome!

I went with the girls group in mid-October and we took a private bus. When we arrived there, we ate apple cider donuts and drank apple cider juice. The donuts and juice were yummy!

After that, we got our bags and went to the apple trees to pick the apples. I picked some big, red juicy apples and some green ones to bring home.

[Syazana] Hmmm…Sounds like a lot of fun!

Next, let’s update everyone about our co-host, Azfar, who has started his National Service at the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

Do you miss him, Azimah?

[Azimah] Yeah, of course!

[Syazana] We all miss him! We’re currently living near the Saratoga County Airport so when I hear the sound of the jet plane in the air, I’d wish I could be with him in Singapore too.

We’re grateful that before he started his National Service on October 5th, he had bonded with our families of friends through recreational activities such as cycling. Let’s listen to the recordings from Azfar in Singapore…

[Audio recording: Bedok reservoir, Singapore.]

[Azfar] Okay, guys! Now we’re gonna start our journey to (the) East Coast and Marina Bay!

We’ll keep you updated along the way and we’ll send more pictures and videos, insha’Allah. Assalamu’alaikum!

[Audio recording: Marina Bay, Singapore.]

So now we’re at Marina Bay. Here’s the Singapore skyline.

[Audio recording: Merlion Park, Singapore.]

[Azfar] Now we’re at Merlion Park. This is the iconic Singapore Merlion.

Over there, we can see the Singapore Flyer. And here, this is Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Now we’re in the heart of Singapore!

[Azimah] Awww! Love, hugs and kisses! Muahhh!

[Syazana] That’s it for Segment I.

[Azimah, Azfar, Syazana] Stay tuned to the next episode...and listen to stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility in the colorful fall.

~ End of Segment II ~

Segment II | Occupational Wellness with Author-Publisher Hidayah Amin III

[Azimah] Now it’s time to welcome our special guest...Author-Publisher...Hidayah Amin.

[Syazana] Welcome to the show, Hidayah!

[Azfar] Welcome to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast!

[Hidayah] Thank you!

[Syazana] In the last episode, Hidayah had answered questions that helped listeners to understand why integrity is the most important value to her from the six values of TRAILS (Trust.Respect.Acceptance.Integrity.Love.and Social Responsibility).

[Azimah] Hidayah had also shared her ideas on building good relationships with people of other races and faiths. I like her simple suggestion that we could try to be caring, friendly and willing to strike conversations with neighbors who live in the neighborhood.

[Syazana, Azimah] Yup! Me, too, Azimah! Doesn’t that remind you of how we try to strike conversations with our neighbors including the elderly?

[Azimah] Yeah! I say “Hi! Good morning!” to several old couples when I walk to the bus pick-up point.

I know! Our neighbors told me that youngsters nowadays hardly greet the elderly when they see them.

Did you know that one morning, when I was out at the drive way, one of the elderly couples passed by and saw me? So I greeted them as usual. Then they said something unexpected that made me smile from ear to ear with gratitude:

“You did a good job raising your children!”

I said: “Huh! What did they do?”

And so, they told me about how both your brother and you would greet them whenever you see them taking their early morning walk unlike many other teens. I’m blessed that you and your brother listened to your parents’ advice on how Muslim teens should behave respectfully towards the elderly. Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah, the Almighty God. Thank you, my darling! I’m so proud of you.

[Azimah] Aww! You’re welcome, Ummi! (My mother!)

[Syazana, Azimah] Okay! Let’s quickly recall what else Hidayah shared in the last episode.

Sure!

Hidayah shared her inspirational story of why she started her company, Helang Books and the challenges she encountered.

[Syazana] Through establishing Helang Books and pursuing a dream career as a writer and publisher based in Singapore, Hidayah has achieved occupational wellness and overall wellness.

In this episode, let’s focus on social responsibility and overall wellness.

Question #4

[Azimah] Okay! The next question for Hidayah:

What is your contribution to the community as part of your social responsibility during COVID-19?

[Hidayah] Singapore had a “lockdown” last year for a few months. We don’t call it “lockdown”, it’s such a taboo word so they call it “Circuit Breaker”.

What happened last year was I couldn’t organize my book launch and some book readings but life goes on. I’m also an adjunct lecturer in one of the polytechnics in Singapore so we actually conduct our classes online.

It’s a bit unfortunate because I miss the interactions with students so we only see them on the computer screen, not able to see them face-to-face.

So, last year, one of my relatives who lives in Abu Dhabi actually got in touch (with me). I mean, we’ve been keeping in touch, but she asked me if I could read a short story.

They submitted the short story for a competition but they were disqualified because one of the judges actually thought that the mother wrote the story for the daughter, which is NOT true!

[Syazana] Oh no!

[Azimah] I would be so upset!

[Hidayah] I know how fragile a child’s feelings and confidence level can be, especially when you have an adult who told you “You’re no good! This cannot be your work.”

I have seen the girl. Her name is Nuha. Whenever she’s in Singapore, she’ll visit me and she writes me letters, I’ll give her my books and all that. She writes well for someone her age.

And then I told the mother we don’t need some competition to let the world know that we have arrived or we have achieved this. We don’t need this. And I believe that this is what the daughter wrote and so I said “Let’s publish it into a book.”

So, we have a chapter book. I got an illustrator to illustrate it and I’ve published it. It’s called “The Cure.” It’s basically about reflections, about COVID-19: you know the confusion, the desperation. When we did this, we decided to donate all the sale proceeds to the migrant workers in Singapore.

Last year at the beginning of COVID-19, the migrant workers in the dormitories were badly hit. In fact, there were a lot of clusters, a lot of people were sick because they were in overcrowded dormitories and maybe their level of sanitation isn’t very good. It was a very sad situation.

[Syazana] We heard about that heartbreaking news last year, right Azimah?

[Azimah] Yeah. So sad...

[Hidaya] They are a part of Singapore as well even though they are migrant workers; they have contributed to Singapore. They have helped us in building our infrastructure and making Singapore the lovely and developed country that we’re in.

[Syazana] I can imagine how anxious and stressful the families of those migrant workers must have been as they live far away from their loved ones. This is the reality that we, migrants, struggle with. My family often turns to prayers and supplication to God, Almighty Allah, for His mercy to help everyone cope with this challenge. Ameen.

[Hidayah] With this book, we actually raised about $4,400 which we donated to the charity that helps the migrant workers. So, in a way, these are the little things that we did to give back to the community.

When you look at the situation, it’s very bleak with the numbers of people dying very high and people getting sick. But at the end of it, we need to also show that we have some humanity left, these are little gestures. Hopefully with the small contribution that we did, especially for Nuha because we did ask her “This is YOUR book.”

[Syazana] Hmmm...so nine-year-old Nuha agreed to donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of her book to the migrant workers?

[Hidayah] She said “Yes.” In a way, I think this is a better deal for her: to have many people read her story and to have the ability to also give back to our migrant workers.

[Syazana] Wow! Impressive!

Thank you for sharing your story of social responsibility and overall wellness on our podcast.

[Azimah] Thank you so much, Hidayah!

[Syazana] There’s a famous saying or quote that you probably know already and we would like to highlight as a reminder first to ourselves then to all our listeners:

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” So, remember that…

So, to all teenage and young adult listeners: Have you thought about your career options? Are you making your plans now? I hope you all are making some solid plans early on.

In the next episode, Hidayah will continue to answer more questions and offer more tips for you to achieve occupational wellness and overall well-being.

[Azimah] So stay tuned to the next episode with Hidayah Amin...

Hello! Holã!

[Intro to Segment I]

ARE YOU READY to listen to inspirational stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility from multicultural families and special needs communities? Sit back, relax and be inspired by the awesome people that we highlight in the first segment of the podcast…

Segment I | Love and How To Be A Socially Responsible Student

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you! Welcome to our favorite season of the year: Fall of 2021! Woohoo!

[Syazana] Yeah! We love the colors of fall. We’re still in the first season of the podcast and you are listening to the 26th episode of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

[Syazana, Azimah] The green leaves of the trees in our neighborhood are bursting with colors! Yeah! We see lots of red, yellow and orange in the beginning of fall or autumn.

[Syazana] Guess what, everyone? We’ve been missing our co-host Azfar who is now in Singapore to serve the country, National Service or NS, for two years.

Honestly, our family’s emotional wellness has been on a roller coaster: sometimes we’re good, sometimes we’re down. We’re trying our best to cope with this separation anxiety and uncertainty especially because we are thousands of miles apart. We’re making daily du’as or supplications for Allah SWT to protect him and help us cope well with the 2-year separation.

Alhamdulillah, praise and thanks to Allah SWT for He has gifted us with extended families and close friends who are kind, loving and making sure that Azfar does not feel too lonely there.

Now, let’s listen to a short video of your brother, recorded by your dad and dedicated to you, Azimah!

[Audio recording: Dinner at East Coast Beach, Singapore.]

[Azfar] Hello, Azimah! I’m at (the) East Coast, makan (eating)! I’m having Satay and also other food. I have with me: uncle, aunt and Amirul...

[Uncle Azan] Hello, Azimah! We eat Satay here. Come to Singapore faster!

[Aunt Aini] Hello, Azimah! We’re enjoying ourselves!

[Cousin Amirul] Hello, Azimah!

[Azfar] Love, hugs and kisses! Muahhh!

[Syazana] Wow! Satay! My favorite! Satay at the famous East Coast beach.  Malay-Indonesian Satay is grilled meat on bamboo sticks such as mutton and shrimps. Thank you to my brother-in-law, Azan, his lovely wife, Aini, and son, Amirul for your kindness. May Allah SWT bless you and reward you for your good deeds. Ameen.

Next...do you remember what we talked about in Segment I last week?

[Azimah, Syazana] Yeah! We talked about being socially responsible.

[Syazana] Excellent recall! It is always important to be socially responsible and even more so during the current global health pandemic of COVID-19.

So the new school year for the Ballston Spa School District has started in the first week of September two days after Labor Day. Azimah: Can you tell us how students like you can be socially responsible when attending school in person?

[Azimah] Sure! Here are my DOs and DON’Ts of attending school in person:

1️⃣ ✅ Check that you are free from any symptoms of common illness. That means before you hop on the school bus or get in your parent’s car, you know that you have no signs of

  • fever
  • coughs
  • running nose
  • sore throat etcetera.

2️⃣ ✅ Consult your parents if you are not sure about your health condition before going to school.

❌ DON’T ignore the symptoms or go to school when you know that you are not feeling well.

❌ If you are NOT having any symptoms or any illness, DON’T fake it or pretend to be sick.

3️⃣ ✅ Remind your parents to read the latest emails on school updates and guidelines including the Coping With the COVID-19 guidelines.

4️⃣ ✅ Be alert, observant and check on your friends’ well-being too. For example, inform your teacher if your friend looks unwell.

5️⃣ ✅ Always strive to put on your best behavior whether you’re on the bus or in school premises. Know exactly when you have to put on your masks and when you can take it off.

6️⃣ ✅ Have faith and trust that the school staff are doing their job with integrity and have your best interest at heart.

❌ If you are symptomatic and was sent home during the day, do NOT be disrespectful or disobedient.

❌ DON’T make things difficult for your school teachers and staff to do their job.

[Syazana] Thank you for your suggestions, Azimah!

Did you know that we receive feedback on our YouTube channel and the Podbean Podcast App & Player recently?

[Azimah] Oh really? That’s awesome!

[Syazana] On our ASKtrioWello YouTube channel, someone with the username “Cedrick” made a positive comment:

[Azimah]

“Great video! Looking forward to seeing more uploads!”

[Syazana] Thank you so much! We appreciate your feedback and will continue to upload more audiograms and short videos in the future.

On the Podbean Podcast App & Player, we received more comments from our loyal listener & fitness guru, Coach Zarina aka “sunnysideza”:

  1. Episode 20 with Author-Architect Ivy Ngeow: Thank you for sharing the link. My teen daughter and I are looking forward to do it. Love the quote, thanks, Ivy (Ngeow).

  • Episode 21 to 24 with Social Work Consultant Brother Mohamed Ali Mahmood:
  • Interesting! Looking forward to hear more from Brother Ali
  • Great tips! Thank you.
  • Thanks, Brother Ali! Great tips for the family.

[Azimah, Syazana] Bravo! Hey! We’re close to crossing the next milestone of 1,000 all-time downloads! As of   September 24, we’ve recorded 894 downloads and it looks like we might achieve this by the end of the year, insha’Allah, God willing!

[Syazana] That’s it for Segment I this week.

[Azimah, Azfar, Syazana] Stay tuned to the next episode...and listen to stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility in the colorful fall.

~ End of Segment II ~

Segment II | Occupational Wellness With Author-Publisher Hidayah Amin

[Azimah] Now it’s time to welcome our guest...Author-Publisher...Hidayah Amin.

[Syazana] Welcome to the show, Hidayah!

[Azfar] Welcome to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast!

[Syazana, Azimah] Hey! We’ve heard the recent hot news! Let’s congratulate Hidayah Amin for winning the prestigious NUS Singapore History Book prize award for her book, Leluhur: Singapore Kampong Gelam.

Bravo! Bravo! We are very proud of your latest achievement, Hidayah! You, go, girl! Yeah! Girl power!

[Hidayah] Thank you!

[Syazana] Once upon a time, Kampong Gelam was the centre of trade and commerce connecting Singapore to the rest of the Malay Archipelago. It served as a religious, intellectual and social hub for the Malays in Singapore and functioned as a Pilgrim Hub for pilgrims bound for the Haj.

Okay, let’s move on to the questions for Hidayah this week...

Question #3

[Syazana] Which of the six values of TRAILS (which stands for Trust, Respect, Acceptance, Integrity, Love and Social Responsibility) is most important to you? Why?

[Hidayah] I think all these values are important: trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility but the most important to me in my professional life is integrity.

People want to get ahead, earn more money, gain power and standing.

If you have integrity, you will

  • NOT cheat people;
  • Be professional in your work;
  • Treat people fairly;
  • Not plagiarise; and
  • Be ethical.

I wouldn’t say I make a lot of money in my professional life. My books and the things I do, I do it with a high level of professionalism: I do it properly, I pay my staff, I don’t shortchange people I do know people in the industry where they will take all the money and pay their staff pittance (a tiny payment or small reimbursement for work) and they’ll say “Oh! Business is bad! Business is bad! But hey, you still drive the Mercedes 200 class!

If you have integrity, it shows the kind of person you are. You live by a certain moral code, ethical way. In that way, you’re setting a standard of conduct for people and people know that.

Even for me, when they look at Helang Books and when they buy my books, they know that they buy quality work. I don’t shortchange anybody. We put in a lot of effort. So to me, once you have integrity, the rest will fall in(to) place. If you have integrity, people will trust you, people will respect you, people will love you. Your readers will appreciate because readers are not stupid. When they look at a book, they know…

“Oh! I got shortchanged!”

“What kind of rubbish story is this?”

“How come it’s so expensive?”

I would like to think that when they read my book, they know that it’s worth the money that they spent and worth the time that they spent reading it, then they will actually appreciate and they love what you do. Some of our books have a lot of content and the theme is about the community. Once you have integrity, the rest of the values fall in place.

[Syazana] How can you build good relationships with people of other races and faiths?

[Hidayah] In my professional life and even personal life, I do meet people of various ethnicities and faiths. So how can we build good relationships with people?

Be a decent human being yourself. If you’re a good person and you don’t judge someone by the color of their skin, by what they believe in and you embrace the differences, I think that is the start of a good relationship. You don’t see that person superficially. You respect the person as an individual.

By being a good role model of your community meaning that you don’t discriminate, you don’t look down on people. You don’t have to do major things to build good relationships.

By respecting the other party and by having conversations, I think that is a start. Like where I live, there’s a lot of old Chinese families, sometimes you’ll see them.

“Oh hello, uncle! How are you?”

Just talking or asking them how they are. *(And) All these conversations, it maybe small but it actually is the start of something, you know because I think everybody is so busy, so engulfed in their own world, best is to start small and just don’t judge someone for the color of their skin or for what they wear: whether they wear hijab, whether they wear a cross.

By being good decent human beings ourselves first, that’s the start for us to build good relationships with other people.

[Azimah] What inspired you to become an author and entrepreneur?

What challenges did you encounter in your journey to achieve occupational wellness?

[Hidayah] I love my job as a producer. I’ve always liked creative things. This writing and publishing came just by accident. What happened was I wanted to write a book about my childhood home that has been in our family since 1912.

It was taken away by the government under the Land Acquisition Act that gives them the right to take away freehold lands from families for purposes of national development. So we had to leave the house. The house is now so called historic just because we used to be part of the Malay Royal grounds. In fact, our house was beside the Istana or the palace of the Malay Royalty.

When we had to leave, I was devastated, and angry, and hurt. Nobody could be bothered about my family who lived there. Nobody knew about my great grandfather who was one of the earliest pioneers and entrepreneurs and philanthropists of Singapore. Nobody knew about us and it was as though we were written off. There’s no story about us in the whole Singapore narrative. I was devastated! In fact, I wrote a book!

[Syazana] Oh yes, everyone! The title of the non fiction book that Hidayah wrote is Gedung Kuning: Memories of a Malay Childhood.

[Hidayah] This was about 11 years ago in 2010. I finished the book in 2009. It’s basically 28 stories of the family which has a lot of themes. I wanted to preserve all my childhood memories, and the history of the house and of my family, of my ancestors.

I sent it (the manuscript) to a well known publisher. I can take rejections but you don’t have to take a year to say “no”! So knowing how argumentative I can be, I actually asked “Why can’t you publish my book?” I think it is well written. They had their reason and they said that it’s not commercial. To me, I don’t accept that especially when the publishing house was not for commercial; it was a university press. And I thought being part of the alumni would help me but NO.

Nobody knew me in the literary circle so I collaborated with the Singapore Heritage Society. My friend who was a member said, “Look Hidayah. Why don’t we help you publish this book?”

So I met the President of the (Singapore Heritage) Society. The book is about history and heritage and they will gladly support (it). I didn’t know anything about publishing. It was a very steep learning curve: very, very steep. *(And) Of course the processes are the same in any creative line in the production. You have pre production, editing and writing, and research.

Then, I didn’t have a lot of money to get a graphic designer—friends designed the cover. I learned design software. Me and Dr. Kevin Tan, the President of the Singapore Heritage Society there, worked on it for many weekends and until past midnight.

Nobody knows Hidayah Amin. And then Kevin asked me “So Hidayah, what shall we have as your insignia? We need to have an insignia.

[Syazana] You might be wondering:

What is insignia? According to Cambridge Online Dictionary, insignia is “an object or mark that shows that a person belongs to a particular organization or group, or has a particular rank.”

[Source: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/amp/english/insignia]

[Hidayah] I was thinking: Hmmm. What shall my insignia be? I remembered, outside my house at the gate, there are two stone eagles. I was a very imaginative child. I used to imagine these stone eagles guarding the house and I used to talk to them. And then I thought: Hmmm. I want to bring as much (SIC (many) memories of my childhood in this book. So okay! Helang!

[Syazana] Oh, in case you don’t understand the Malay language, Helang is the Malay word for “eagles”.

[Hidayah] Instead of Eagles Books, right, so Helang Books! That’s how Helang Books was born.

[Syazana] Wow! That’s awesome! Thank you, Hidayah!

[Azimah] Thank you so much, Hidayah!

[Syazana] In the next episode, Hidayah will continue to answer more questions and offer more tips for teens to achieve occupational wellness.

[Azimah] So stay tuned to the next episode with Hidayah Amin...

Hello! Holã!

[Intro to Segment I]

ARE YOU READY to listen to inspirational stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility from multicultural families and special needs communities? Sit back, relax and be inspired by the awesome people that we highlight in the first segment of the podcast…

Segment I | Why Is It Important To Be Socially Responsible?

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] You’re listening to the 25th episode of the first season of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo, Azfar and Azimah.

In Segment I this week, we’ll talk about social responsibility and why it is so important especially during the health pandemic triggered by the Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

During the summer vacation with mother nature that we talked about in Episode 24, what did we do to fulfill our social responsibility?

Azimah: Tell us about it.

[Azimah] We had done our part by NOT littering at the camping ground and at the beautiful Saratoga State Park.

[Syazana] In fact, I personally paid extra attention to the cleanliness of the facilities there. For example, on the 3D/2N camping trip at Adirondack Safari in July, I had informed the camp staff to clear the waste bin in the women’s restroom because it was already full to the brim! Also, the shower area needed more cleaning so I told the camp staff about it.

I could have chosen to let it be and just ignore it but because I wanted to do my part in being socially responsible, I informed the staff who were roving around to check on how things were going on.

[Azimah] For the entire school year, Azfar and I chose fully remote learning instead of in-person learning as a way for us to quickly help stop the spread of COVID-19 in New York.

[Syazana] Yeah! It was a really, really tough decision. Our family felt it was the best way to show our support for New York state. We needed to cope with all the uncertainties and frequent changes relating to school closures and school re-openings, social distancing and of course mask-wearing measures.

We prayed for everyone’s safety and for Almighty God to help find a solution to this pandemic. So when the vaccines were ready and rolled out to the public, we did not delay in getting ourselves vaccinated, right?

[Azimah, Azfar] Yup! Oh, yes!

[Syazana] I remembered your Dad was the first in the family to be fully vaccinated in May this year. As an engineer working in the semiconductor industry who is classified as an essential worker, of course he wanted to do his part to fulfill his social responsibility, the sooner the better. Then Azfar and I were next in line to be fully vaccinated and finally you, Azimah, the baby in the family!

[Azimah] If you’re still not vaccinated, we hope that you’ll be open to getting yourself and your family vaccinated as soon as you qualify.

That depends on your age and health condition.

[Syazana] We hope and pray that New York state as well as all other states in America and other countries will achieve its desired goal of getting more than 80% of its total population being vaccinated!

[Syazana, Azimah] Ameen. Ameen.

[Syazana] That’s it for Segment I this week.

[Azimah, Azfar, Syazana] Stay tuned to the next episode...and listen to stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility in the late summer.

~ End of Segment I ~

Segment II | Occupational Wellness With Author-Publisher Hidayah Amin

Coming up next…

In the second segment of the podcast, we’ll learn about productivity and the nine dimensions of wellness—physical, emotional, environmental, spiritual, social, intellectual, mental, occupational and financial wellness—so we can survive and thrive in this unpredictable world.

[Syazana] As promised, we’ll talk about Occupational Wellness in Segment II this week.

We’re happy to introduce another guest speaker from Singapore. She is the award-winning Author-Publisher and Founder of Helang Books, an imprint of Archipelago Consultancy...Hidayah Amin.

[Azimah] Welcome to the show, Hidayah!

[Azfar] Welcome to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast!

[Syazana] First of all, let’s get to know a little more about who Hidayah Amin is. Hidayah is a Singapore-born award-winning and multi-lingual author. She had her first short story published when she was just 11 years old. It was only when she lost her childhood home that she resumed writing and published the book, 'Gedung Kuning: Memories of a Malay Childhood' in 2010.

Do you remember that in Segment II of Episode 24, our guest speaker, Brother Mohamed Ali Mahmood shared some tips to deal with rejections in life?

[Azimah, Azfar] Oh yeah! Yeah, I remember!

Did you know that Hidayah was inspired to set up Helang Books, her own independent publishing house, after an established publishing house rejected her first book?

[Azimah] Oh Wow!

[Syazana] Masha’Allah! How things have turned around for Hidayah! She has written eight non-fiction books and eight children’s books since 2010.

Question #1

[Azimah] Tell us about who you are and what you love to do in your professional and personal life.

[Hidaya] Hi! I’m Hidayah Amin from Singapore. I’m an author and I’m also the publisher of Helang Books. Helang Books is an independent publishing house in Singapore.

If I could find time, what I love to do is gardening. I like plants so I grow all these plants at home. I like to go for walks. I used to run and do yoga but I’m still recovering from a muscle injury.

I’m also the caregiver for my dad. He is 88 years old and he’s not well. A lot of my free time (is) taken up caregiving. As we all know, caregiving is the most difficult and challenging job there is. It's very, emotionally draining as well so because of all these, I think I have very little free time. I’d like to think that when I sleep, (that is) the only time that I get to completely rest.

Question #2

[Azimah]

Did your work shift to on-line work from home or remote only during the COVID-19 health pandemic?

[Hidayah] COVID-19 threw us off our comfort zone. I’ve always been working from home, at least for the last few years, so it’s the same for me. The difference is a lot of my meetings are now conducted online either via Zoom, Google Meet, Hangouts or even Skype.

[Azimah] How did you cope with staying at home, practicing social distancing and no overseas travel? What are you doing to ensure that you and your family members are staying healthy and engaged during the pandemic?

[Hidayah] Sometimes what we do is we go for walks. We each have our different outlets. Like I mentioned, I like to look at my plants, I have a little garden, and see whether or not my avocado plant is growing well.

COVID-19 actually allows me more time to be reflective and appreciate my family more because we shouldn’t take anything for granted and we should try to spend as much time with our loved ones. Yeah.

[Syazana, Azimah] Thank you, Hidaya! Thank you so much for sharing your story, Hidayah!

[Syazana] In the next episode, Hidayah will offer career tips for teens to achieve occupational wellness.

[Azimah] So stay tuned to the next episode with Hidayah Amin...

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast! This episode is co-sponsored by Hardi Kamsani and my dad, Azman Repin. Thank you and may God bless you.

[Azimah] Hello! May peace be upon you!

[Syazana] Hey! You’re listening to the twenty-fourth episode of the first season of the podcast with me, Syazana, and the Astro Duo: Azfar and Azimah.

In segment one of Episode 23 last week, we mentioned about taking a long break from podcast recording to enjoy the summer vacation.

Azimah also attended the Extended School Year or summer school for special needs students in person for six weeks. What was it like, Azimah? Did you enjoy yourself?

[Azimah] Summer school was fun! I met my teachers, classmates and the bus driver too! What I liked most about it is that I get to swim in the indoor pool and watch movies with my buddies!

[Azfar] Yup! I know!

[Syazana] Whoa! Good for you! Now, let’s talk about trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love, and social responsibility within our family and friends.

How about our summer camp at the Adirondack Safari, Schroon River in Warrensburg?

[Azimah, Azfar] Hmmm...We had lots of fun with Zuhayr’s family from Clifton Park. Both families brought what we had promised to bring for the camp. We showed respect, acceptance, integrity and love (by putting on our best behavior.) We had two days of barbecue: chicken on bamboo sticks, lamb kebabs, pasta, beef burgers, marshmallows and chocolate, roti paratha or flat bread. Slurp!

[Syazana, Azfar] We were grateful to Siti and Badrul for the delicious home cooked Malaysian style meat curry plus Ayam Masak Merah or Chicken in Red sauce and Nasi Hujan Panas or Flavored Colorful Sunny Showers Rice. Siti even surprised everyone with a special made-to-order Happy Graduation cake for Zuhayr and Azfar!Oh yeah! I remember!*

What’s your favorite part of the glamping which is short for glamorous + camping?

[Azfar] Just relax and it’s of course very good for your mental health and overall wellness.

[Azimah] The beds in the tent and kayaking!

[Syazana] I agree with you, Azimah! Kayaking was the best! Thanks to Siti and Badrul, Zuhayr’s mom and dad, for lending us their kayaks and life jackets. It was our first time kayaking at the tranquil Schroon River. Luckily, your dad was in the Singapore Police Force dragon boat team during his National Service in Singapore. It helped us to steer the kayak back on course after going round and round in circles at the start! Hahaha!

[Azimah, Syazana] Hehehe! That was too funny! The only thing I didn’t like was the mosquito attack during movie night! Ouch! Ewww, that’s true! We had donated blood to over 50 mosquitos! Yikes!

[Syazana]

Where else did we go, Azimah?

[Azimah] Oh! We went for a nature walk at Saratoga State Park. We went there with sister Zahia and her husband, our friends from Watervliet.

[Outdoor recording #1: Intro Azimah]

[Syazana, Azimah] We were happy to discover the natural Orenda Spring: the water was so refreshing!

[Outdoor recording #2: Orenda Spring]

[Syazana] At Geyser Creek, the water was so clear and calm that we just had to remove our socks and dip our feet in the water!

[Outdoor recording #3: Geyser Creek]

Hey! Remember we saw a deer in the bushes behind the fence on our way home.

[Outdoor recording #4: Hello, deer!]

[Syazana] Before the nature trail, we had the pleasure to host a lunch for sister Zahia and her husband.

[Azimah] I really loved the Arabic food you cooked! Lamb Kabsa with rice, Green Lentils soup, Egg-potato Veggie Salad. After the nature walk, we had some coffee  and tea with muffins...

[Syazana] … and Croissant de Raisins. Oh, I loved it when we spent quality time close to nature and all its beauty, without the mosquitos please!

[Azimah, Azfar] Of course!  Yeah!

[Syazana] That’s it for segment one today.

[Azimah, Azfar, Syazana] So stay tuned to the next episode and listen to stories of trust, respect, acceptance, integrity, love and social responsibility in the late summer.

Segment II | Wellness With Social Work Consultant Mohd Ali Mahmood IV

How to deal with Rejections in Life

[Azimah] Now, it’s time to welcome our special guest, brother Mohamed Ali…Welcome back to the show, Brother Ali.

[Azfar] Welcome back to the ASK Trio About Wellness podcast.

[Brother Ali] Thank you.

[Syazana] Teens have creative, wonderful ideas and suggestions that they think are super or great! However, others might not agree with them and might reject their ideas or suggestions.

[Azimah] What are some ways to cope with rejections in life?

Golden Tip #3: Separate the event from the self

  • Rejections can easily be seen as another form of failure. It is also a part of life.

  • We grew up with rejections since we were very young.

  • I believe we would have experienced countless times of not being chosen to be a part of the  winning team - That’s rejection.

  • We might not be the one chosen by the teacher to lead a project, or the projects we put our heart and effort might not be chosen as the best - That gives a sense of rejection.

  • Or, we might not get picked by the coach for the school team even though we are good - that is rejection.

  • Later in life, we will also face rejections, college applications, job interviews, business loans, even marriage proposals.

  • The problem with rejection is when we equate that to a deficit on our self - what is wrong with me? Why am I not good enough? What am I lacking?

  • When these questions keep surfacing every time we encounter rejections, they will chip away into our self-confidence and self-esteem.

  • The trick is to separate the event , which is ‘the rejection’ from the quality or attributes that are within you - your self.

  • It may be difficult at the start, but as you practice this more and more, then you will discover that each event is actually a necessary step towards you reaching success.

  • When you face rejection, again, look at the ‘WHAT’ that you could work on to improve your ideas, your suggestions, your proposals.

  • And by being able to separate the event from the “self”, you could also discover that it may not be about that your idea is not up to mark. It could also be that the ones that are rejecting could have their own preconceived ideas about the ideas or even towards you as a person and these are beyond your control for you to be preoccupied.

Bonus Question

[Syazana, Azimah] Next: Our last and final bonus question for Brother Ali.

Misunderstandings or conflicts are often a result of communication breakdown or ineffective communication. What are some communication strategies that teens can learn to avoid misunderstandings?

Golden Tip #4: Effective communication starts with understanding

  • This is a BIG topic by itself.

  • There are many strategies we could use to communicate effectively.

  • And we need to be able to use them consciously to prevent misunderstandings and conflicts.

  • It will take me several sessions if I were to do this.

  • So, I think , for this round, allow me to share with you this wonderful quote which I usually share with my students:

    • Listen to understand, not to respond.

  • Sometimes we get too preoccupied in putting our arguments across, so much so that we cannot listen carefully to what is (was) being said.

  • We only hear selectively, looking for ways to rebut, or formulate (formulating) our responses as we listen to the other party.

  • Good communication starts with really understanding:

    • What was being said;

    • How it was said;

    • What feelings accompanied these words - in terms of the tone, the choice of words, the non-verbal and gestures;

    • All that requires our attention.

  • So, careful listening avoids misunderstanding and hence, unnecessary conflict.

  • Another tip is for you to CHECK your understanding.

  • Professionals call it PARAPHRASING.

  • Simply, it is to reflect back to the speaker what you have heard and understood and check (checking) if they are correct.

  • This really helps your own understanding so that YOU do not misunderstand.

  • So, you might say… “ Mom, I heard you wanted me to go to the store this evening to pick up some groceries after my football practice, Is that right?’  OR ‘Dad, you said you could not spend this weekend at home because of a business trip your company has scheduled last minute. Do I hear you correctly? Then, can we find a new date?

[Azfar] Do you have any other advice?

[Bro. Ali] Relationships take effort and we need to be open to listen in order to understand each other.

[Syazana, Azimah, Azfar] Wow! Great tip(s)! Excellent tip, Brother Ali. Bravo! Thank you, brother Ali.

If you are a teenager or even an adult trying to cope with rejections in life or communication breakdowns, we hope that you’ll find the tips that Brother Ali shared relevant and useful.

That’s it for segment two this week. In the next episode, we’ll bring on another guest speaker from Singapore to talk about occupational wellness for teens.

[Azimah, Syazana] Stay tuned to the next episode. Bye!
