A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro, by Heather Norman Smith

Today, Roberta talks to Heather Norman Smith about her new book A Simple Kindness in Flatsboro, available from Kregel publishers.

A small dose of kindness can go a long way

Andy Clark has always been different. But it isn't just the tumorous mass covering half his face that sets him apart—it's his quiet kindness. As an anonymous do-gooder in Flatsboro, North Carolina, Andy lives out what his mama taught him, even though she's no longer there.

Della Rose Miller, a well-known former beauty queen, escapes her crumbling marriage to arrogant Wade Miller and moves back to her hometown in hopes of finding reprieve. She and her daughter settle into a little Flatsboro apartment and quickly learn that they’re in the same complex as a childhood classmate whose heart Della Rose broke in third grade.

With her life turned upside down, Della Rose is uneasy about starting fresh, but when unassuming Andy turns his generosity toward her daughter, an unlikely friendship rekindles. When a heroic act suddenly pushes Andy into the spotlight, he risks his anonymity and quiet day-to-day habits to stand up for what's right.

As Della Rose navigates the end of her marriage and Andy continues his secret philanthropy, they navigate grief and trusting God. Heather Norman Smith weaves a charming and heartwarming Southern story to remind you of the power of simple kindness.

Overwhelmed Mom, by Jamie Erickson

Today, Roberta talks to Jamie Erickson about her new book Overwhelmed Mom: Quiet the Chaos, Mind What Matters, and Enjoy Your Life Again, available from Moody Publishers.

Is there a happy medium between Pinterest perfection and chaos culture?

Moms hear a chorus of competing messages. One minute, we’re told we can do it all, and the next, we’re encouraged to be “real women” who live as “Hot Mess Mombies.” Both anthems—perfection and chaos—leave us feeling burdened.

In Overwhelmed Mom, Jamie Erickson shows us how to push back against the weariness epidemic that plagues so many women on both ends of the spectrum. Through biblical principles and flexible solutions, she’ll help us learn to adjust our homes, schedules, and attitudes so that we may experience right-now relief and forward movement in common stress areas.

The Try-Hard gospel of the world assures us that if we just got up earlier, stayed up later, and micromanaged every waking moment, we can outrun our overwhelm. But no amount of running on empty will ever help us catch up. Reshaping a harried life is long-game, soul work.

Overwhelmed Mom equips women to edit their lives with intention, find purpose and vision in the work God has called them to, and create daily rhythms that will help them steward their days with delight, not drudgery. Each chapter ends with questions and prompts for readers to consider as they unmoor themselves from the relentless to-do list that plagues them.

We don’t have to keep living as overwhelmed moms—Jamie invites us to experience freedom and enjoy the gift of motherhood.

The Sword, by Marty Machowski

Today, Roberta talks to Marty Machowski about his new book The Sword: Magnus and the Mystery of Romans, available from New Growth Press publishers.

Best-selling author Marty Machowski leads young readers on an adventure to unlock the mystery of the swords of Magnus while exploring Paul’s letter to the Romans.

Following the format of his popular storybook studies, Machowski weaves a Bible study of the book of Romans with a fictional story. The Sword shares the story of Katana and Brant who find a wooden sword and ancient journal belonging to Magnus, a one-time gladiator who became a guard who watched over the apostle Paul while he was under house arrest. Their discovery leads the siblings on a quest to reveal the mystery of the swords by studying Magnus’s journal.

The Bible study portion of The Sword is presented as the study notes of Magnus. It was through his study of the gospel from Paul’s letter to the Romans that Magnus received the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. Readers will learn alongside Katana and Brant the bad news of our sin and the good news that rescues us through the cross of Christ.

  • Vivid, full-color illustrations by Flavia Sorrentino keep the attention of younger readers.
  • Written for upper elementary age level readers (ages 8–12) and designed to be read out loud as a family.
  • Encourages families to read and study the Bible together as they develop regular family devotions.

Redemption Song, by Sean DeMars

Today, Roberta talks to Sean DeMars about his new book Redemption Song: A Primer on Singing for the People of God, available from Christian Focus publishers.

Experience True Worship: A Fresh Look at Singing God’s Praise

Drawing from the ancient Song of Moses, this transformative guide takes you on a journey to discover the heart of authentic Christian worship. Moving beyond the tired “contemporary vs. traditional” debates, the book explores eleven powerful insights that will reshape how you think about singing in church.

Whether you’re a passionate worship leader or someone who struggles to engage in corporate singing, this book meets you where you are. Through careful biblical analysis and practical wisdom, it shows how singing isn’t just a warm–up for the sermon―it’s a vital act of worship that engages our whole being: mind, heart, and imagination.

You’ll learn why God’s people sing, how to sing with both joy and reverence, and what it means to truly worship in spirit and truth. The author skillfully addresses both “artists” and “engineers” in the church, showing how God’s Word speaks to different temperaments and personalities in worship.

Written with pastoral warmth and theological depth, this primer on congregational singing will help you move from merely mouthing words to experiencing the deep joy of praising God alongside your brothers and sisters in Christ.

Your Wilderness is Not a Waste, by Dustin Crowe

Today, Roberta talks to Dustin Crowe about his new book Your Wilderness Is Not a Waste: God's Purpose in Suffering and Struggles, available from Moody Publishers.

The wilderness can be scary—a place full of peril and desolation. And it can feel meaningless. But when we read the Scriptures, the wilderness is also the place God reveals Himself and cares for the people He loves. Pastor Dustin Crowe explores the biblical theme of the wilderness, helping readers counter the harsh, seemingly hopeless seasons in their lives with hope and courage.

The wilderness is often the place where God grows our faith and proves His faithfulness. But to grow, we must be intentional about listening and leaning into His provision. Looking to wilderness stories of the Bible—including Hagar, Moses, David, Eijah, and Jesus—Your Wilderness Is Not a Waste shows who God is and how He’s at work. Readers will find encouragement in His good purposes as they experience God’s sustaining and shaping grace in their lives.

The wilderness has a dual nature, with both threats to our faith and opportunities to grow in faith. As we depend on God, we discover how to worship in our wilderness rather than waste it. Whether you’re in a season of significant transition, spiritual apathy, heartbreak, waiting, or a time of trial and testing, God invites you to come close—to experience His provision and power—Your Wilderness Is Not a Waste shows us how.

War orphan Jackson TerKeurst’s remarkable story of adoption and faith teaches us to notice God’s presence in our lives so we can look toward the future with hope.

The son of a town chief. The grandson of a witch doctor. An orphan, a war statistic, a nameless boy trying to survive gunfire and starvation during the Liberian Civil War. Jackson TerKeurst used to find his identity in scarcity and trauma. Today he finds it in knowing he is a child of God.

Gus Gets Badgered, by Julie Lowe

Today, Roberta talks to Julie Lowe about her new children's book Gus Gets Badgered: When You Meet a Bully, available from New Growth Press publishers.

In Gus Gets Badgered, children will learn how recognize and navigate when someone is mistreating others, and with God’s help, speak up for what is right and good.

Gus, Jax, and Manny have become friends with Wesley, the new cub in town, but Wesley doesn’t always treat Gus kindly. Wesley likes to tease and pick on Gus. This makes Gus uncomfortable, and he asks his dad what he should do. With his dad’s advice, and the help of his friends, Gus is able to speak up the next time Wesley is mean to him.

Edited by counselor Julie Lowe, Gus Gets Badgered offers concrete, grace-based help for recognizing and responding to bullying and is part of the Good News for Little Hearts series that brings gospel wisdom and biblical counsel to families. Based on CCEF’s model of hope and help, each story focuses on an animal family’s real-life issues, encouraging young readers toward a growing relationship with Jesus during challenging circumstances.

  • A special section at the end of the book guides parents in helping their kids express when they are uncomfortable and respond when mistreatment occurs.
  • Children ages four to seven will be captivated by Joe Hox’s colorful, fun illustrations that bring the animal world to life.
  • Teaches children and parents about bullying and how to treat others kindly and with respect.

Sacred Surrender, by Jaimie Jamgochian

Today, Roberta talks to  Jaimie Jamgochian about her new book Sacred Surrender.

“After long seasons of believing and waiting for precious promises from God to come to pass (that have yet to), I realized that it was time to start living to the fullest in the in-between and empty places. It has become my life mantra that it is still possible to find joy and live fully even in the most barren places. I finally booked the dream trip solo, recognizing that Jesus is the best date since He knows the deepest desires of my heart. I finally started seeing myself through His lens instead of how the world perceives me.

Although I have had the honor of achieving career goals and dreams, that has not come without a cost. But that is all part of this walk of faith. Trials will threaten to knock us downfrom time to time, but we can choose whether they crush us or refine us.

Marked by Joy, by Jared Mitzelfelt

Today, Roberta talks to Jared Mitzelfelt about his new book Marked by Joy: Discovering the Joy that Defined the First Believers, available from Lucid Books publishers.

Do you long for a life filled with joy? You're not alone-joy is a desire shared by everyone. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be people of joy, even in the midst of trials and suffering. When we look at the early church in the New Testament, we see a community marked by overflowing joy, despite facing intense persecution and societal pressures. They were a people marked by joy.

But what about today? Does joy still mark Christians in the twenty-first century? Too often, we find ourselves weighed down by anxiety, depression, anger, and discontentment-far from the joy that should define us. What has happened to the joy that once set believers apart?

What about you? Does joy mark your life, or have other struggles taken its place?

In this book, we'll dive into Scripture to uncover the root of our joy deficit and seek practical ways to restore joy to our lives, even during challenging times. My prayer is that, after reading this, you will be equipped to cultivate lasting joy and live the joy-filled life God has always intended for you.

Fearfully and wonderfully made—some truths transform us, body and soul.
