This week on Back & Forth, Dan and Vish sit down with Tom, who opens up about the realities of growing up in the middle of a broken home and dealing with years of emotional, physical and psychological abuse.
He talks honestly about being used as the punch-bag for a failed relationship, how that shaped his sense of self, and what it’s taken to rebuild his life since leaving home at 15. From the struggle to access therapy, to surviving multiple suicide attempts, to learning how to break unhealthy cycles — Tom’s story is raw, grounding and incredibly important.
Dan and Vish also explore the impact of parental resentment, the long shadow childhood trauma casts into adulthood, and why kids in the middle of toxic relationships are so often forgotten.
It’s a tough conversation at points, but also a hopeful one — about resilience, support systems, humour as a coping mechanism, and the possibility of creating a healthier future no matter where you’ve come from.
Listeners are encouraged to seek help when needed and recognise that opening up is a sign of strength, not weakness.
