Tanya Ali Jalani on Awakening, Mental Health, and the Human Side of Healing

This week, I sit down with the luminous Tanya Ali Jalani: breathwork facilitator, sound healer and the founder of Riise. Tanya’s story is one of profound inner awakening, cultural reinvention, and the courage it takes to dismantle the conditioning we inherit.

Tanya grew up in Iran before migrating to Australia at age six, carrying the weight of cultural expectation, displacement, and early mental health struggles. At twelve, she knew something inside her felt different: but didn’t yet have the language for depression, trauma, or the emotional storms that shaped her early life.

Her life changed dramatically six years ago during a deep meditation retreat, where she experienced a spiritual awakening so powerful it rewired the way she thought, felt and moved in the world. Today, she teaches breathwork and sound healing through a lens of responsibility, integration and emotional safety: and she speaks openly about the days she still has to work hard not to dip.

In this conversation, we explore:

• How cultural and family conditioning shapes identity

• Tanya’s profound “before and after” awakening experience

• The difference between sadness and clinical depression

• The hidden emotional load carried by immigrant and Middle Eastern families

• Why breathwork can activate dormant energies — and why responsible aftercare matters

• Why spiritual highs mean nothing without staying human

• The rituals and practices that help her remain grounded

This is a conversation for anyone who has ever felt wired differently, struggled in silence, or longed for a deeper connection to themselves.

A special thank you to our sponsor, Aestheticá Byron Bay: the female-founded, nurse-led medi-spa redefining natural, ethical cosmetic treatments.

David the Medium on Intuition, Healing and Life After Death

What comes to mind when you picture a psychic medium? Incense? Crystal balls? Whispery voices?

David is none of those things.

Before becoming one of Australia’s most sought-after mediums, he was a corporate counter-terrorism analyst — logical, sceptical and deeply uninterested in “woo woo.” Then a single reading in suburban Melbourne changed everything.

In this conversation, David shares the story behind his unlikely spiritual awakening and the trauma that sharpened his intuition. We talk about what the afterlife really feels like, why he believes nothing is a coincidence, and his beautiful philosophy that life on earth is a classroom for the soul.

He opens up about growing up as a highly intuitive child without realising it, coming out as a teenager in conservative Melbourne, his parents’ separation, and how grief, heartbreak and “real life” became the very experiences that trained his spiritual gifts.

We also explore:

  • How to strengthen your own intuition (and why everyone has it)

  • What it feels like to receive messages from spirit

  • Reincarnation, soul contracts and the “waiting room” he calls heaven

  • Why trauma often unlocks psychic gifts

  • How to recognise signs, synchronicities and déjà vu

  • The surprising connection between spirituality and self-development

It’s a grounded, thoughtful and surprisingly practical look at intuition, energy, grief and what it means to be alive. Whether you’re deeply spiritual or gently sceptical, this episode might change the way you see the world — and yourself.

Sacred Six: The Rituals & Practices Helping Me Heal From Burnout

At the end of 2023, I hit a wall. Anxiety and burnout forced me to slow down and rebuild (you can hear more in earlier episodes). Out of that experience came Beautiful Inside — a space for honest conversations about mental health, healing, and redefining beauty as something that starts within.

In this solo episode, I share my current Sacred Six — the six rituals and mindset shifts helping me heal, reset, and find balance.

1. Creating a Sacred Space

It includes my:

• Infraredi red light: here’s my discount code. Here’s the article about it

• Dyson Supersonic R

• My 5 Minute Journal

• My Pulsetto device: here's another discount code '

• Fragrances by The Ayu and Shemana, candles, incense, crystals, prayer beads, and a photo of my grandmother

• Tools like my De La Heart lymphatic tool and Lonvitalite dermaroller

The space itself, with a Viola marble benchtop from Allambie Marble Crafts and VJ panels, feels beautiful and intentional. It reminds me daily of the power of ritual and environment in healing.

2. Energy Healing: The Spiral Soul Healing with Kellie
I recently completed an 8-week Spiral with SoulHealingKellie. Her own story of trauma and transformation inspired me to dive in, and the process combined emotional clearing, EFT, and inner child work.

What it gave me:

• More openness, less procrastination

• Courage to take action

• Cleared blocks around goal-setting and asking for what I want

• Freedom to dream bigger without fearIt taught me one vital lesson: get out of your own way.

3. Spinal Energetics with Dr Sarah Jane

Dr Sarah Jane created Spinal Energetics™, blending chiropractic, psychology, and energy work. In my session, she “read” my pain with uncanny accuracy — at one point, my arm felt on fire. Though my neck pain is ongoing, I saw how physical and emotional healing mirror one another.

4. Breath & Sound Healing with Tanya Alijani

Through her Soulchemy method, Tanya combines breathwork and sound frequencies that shift the body into deep relaxation. My intention was to release parenting anxiety — I left feeling lighter, calmer, transformed.

5. Yin Yoga at Modern Movement

Yin has become my Sunday reset. At Modern Movement, teachers Tim and Rose create a spiritual, still space that balances out the intensity of other practices.

6. Mindset Shifts with Mel Robbins

Mel Robbins’ Let Them philosophy and 5 Second Rule gave me structure and motivation. They helped me clarify my fitness goals — weights, running, swimming — and reminded me that movement is medicine for body, mind, and soul.

And if you love this episode, stay tuned — I’ll be sharing even more rituals, products, and practices in my upcoming Sacred Sixty Selfcare and Wellness Guide.

Jess Sepel on OCD, Healing from Disordered Eating, Grief, and Building JSHealth with Heart

In this raw and soul-stirring episode of Beautiful Inside, Jess Sepel—best-selling author, clinical nutritionist, and founder of JSHealth—opens up like never before.

We go far beyond green powders and skin supplements, delving into the darker undercurrents of her story: the obsessive calorie counting, the anxiety, the panic attacks, and the intrusive thoughts that haunted her for years.

Jess shares the moment her husband walked her to a dumpster to throw away her scales, the rock bottom she hit during her honeymoon, and the OCD diagnosis that finally gave a name to her suffering. She also speaks with aching honesty about losing her best friend to suicide, and the purpose that grief ignited in her life.

You’ll also hear the softer, more joyful rituals that now anchor her—nightly magnesium baths, deleting Instagram at bedtime, and her love of gelato and Real Housewives.

This is a conversation about being wildly successful and still deeply human, about doing the inner work, and about building a brand that nourishes from the inside out.

  • The scale moment: the day she physically threw out her eating disorder

  • What OCD really feels like—and how therapy changed her brain

  • Grieving her soul sister and choosing to speak up about mental health

  • The birth of JSHealth: how a secret blog post went viral overnight

  • Her surprising night routine (hint: it involves deleting Instagram)

  • Why pressure is the emotion we don’t talk about enough

Beautiful Inside by Beauticate
Jessica Maguire on Why Anxiety, Gut Issues, and Chronic Pain Are All Connected

What if the way you experience stress, anxiety, and even chronic pain isn’t just in your head—but rooted in your nervous system? Jessica Maguire, a physiotherapist, TEDx speaker, and founder of Nervous System School, has dedicated her career to helping people understand how past experiences shape the body’s ability to regulate itself—and, more importantly, how we can retrain it to feel safe.

I first discovered Jessica’s work on Instagram during my own deep dive into nervous system regulation. Her insights resonated immediately—she has a way of explaining complex science in a way that’s not only accessible but genuinely transformative. After signing up for her Vagus Nerve masterclass, I knew I had to learn more. So, while in Byron Bay, I sat down with Jessica in the tranquil garden of Three Meadows to talk about the mind-body connection, trauma, and the science of healing.

Jessica’s journey is as personal as it is professional. After tragically losing two brothers, she experienced firsthand how trauma imprints on the body, manifesting as anxiety, burnout, and physical symptoms like chronic pain and gut issues. This led her to study the nervous system at a deeper level, eventually creating the Vagus Nerve Program and the Nervous System Certification Course, which have now helped over 20,000 people worldwide.

In this episode, we explore how the nervous system affects our emotions, why so many of us feel stuck in fight-or-flight, and what practical steps we can take to move from survival mode to a state of calm and balance.

What we cover:

– How trauma reshapes the nervous system—and how to retrain it

– The three nervous system states and how to shift between them

– The connection between stress, gut health, and chronic pain

– The role of the vagus nerve in emotional resilience

– Simple techniques to self-regulate and feel at home in your body

Beautiful Inside by Beauticate
Jane Wurwand on Overcoming Adversity, Finding Purpose & Building a Billion-Dollar Brand

Jane Wurwand is not just the founder of Dermalogica—she’s a force of nature. A visionary in the beauty industry, she built a billion-dollar global skincare empire while championing financial independence for women. But behind her success is a deeply personal story of resilience, reinvention, and sheer determination.

In this episode of Beautiful Inside by Beauticate, I sat down with Jane at Dermalogica’s headquarters in LA to hear her extraordinary journey firsthand. She opened up about losing her father at just two years old, growing up in Scotland with a single mother who instilled in her an unshakable drive for independence, and the challenges she faced as a young woman navigating an industry dominated by men.

Jane shares how she escaped a toxic marriage, started over in South Africa, and later took a bold leap to California—arriving with nothing but a plan, unstoppable determination, and a vision that would change the beauty world forever. She explains how adversity shaped her work ethic, why financial empowerment is at the heart of Dermalogica, and the mindset shifts that helped her turn setbacks into stepping stones.

We also dive into the power of intuition, the role of magical thinking in success, and the daily rituals that keep Jane grounded while leading a global brand. Her story is one of reinvention, courage, and unwavering belief in the power of purpose-driven business.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, faced personal or professional setbacks, or wondered how to truly build something meaningful, this episode is packed with insight and inspiration.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

• How childhood adversity shaped Jane’s drive and independence

• The bold decisions that led to the creation of Dermalogica

• How to reframe trauma and setbacks into fuel for success

• The power of visualization and intuition in business and life

• Jane’s daily rituals for balance, resilience, and creative thinking

This is a conversation about more than just skincare—it’s about reinvention, resilience, and the courage to bet on yourself.

Vedic Meditation Teacher Gary Gorrow on Designing Sacred Spaces

In this transformative episode of our Sacred Spaces series, sponsored by King Living, we delve into the story of Gary Gorrow—renowned meditation teacher, Vedic master, and the visionary co-creator of Soma, a wellness retreat nestled in the Byron Bay hinterland. Soma is a sanctuary for healing and transformation, set across nine hectares of lush tropical countryside. Its design, a stunning collaboration between Gary, his brother and designer George Gorrow, and Balinese architect Rieky Sunur, seamlessly blends modern minimalism with Balinese influences. From the iconic geodesic yoga dome to the serene bamboo garden and lotus pond, Soma’s beauty serves as a perfect backdrop for mindfulness and connection. Gary’s own home, located on the Soma property, reflects the same ethos, with floor-to-ceiling windows that invite nature inside and create a deep sense of tranquility. It was in this space, with the rain falling outside and Gary’s cat Leopold purring nearby, that we sat down for this heartfelt conversation. Gary shares his journey from growing up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, struggling with depression and burnout in his early career in film and TV production, to discovering meditation as a tool to heal his nervous system and change his mindset. He speaks about his “calling” to become a meditation teacher, working with A-list stars and CEOs, and the profound lessons he’s learned along the way. In this episode, Gary also provides practical insights into building a meaningful meditation practice and creating spaces that foster inner peace—lessons I’ve been applying in my own life with transformative results. With gratitude to our Season Three sponsor King Living, who share our belief that home is a sanctuary. Their innovative furniture designs and Sleep Collection prioritize wellness and adaptability, making your sacred spaces even more inviting. Don’t miss upcoming episodes where I share my own experience with King Living’s customisable mattresses in my Sleep Diary.
