I sit down with Emma Godfrey to share her extraordinary story of motherhood, survival, and resilience.
Emma was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia (APML) the day after giving birth to her second daughter, a moment that should have been filled with newborn bliss, but instead became a fight for her life. As Emma navigated intensive cancer treatment while adjusting to life as a new mum, her journey took another devastating turn when she went into kidney failure. While she is now thankfully in remission from her leukaemia, Emma is living with chronic kidney disease and facing the reality of needing a kidney transplant once she reaches a certain remission milestone.
In this episode, Emma speaks honestly about the shock of diagnosis, and the physical and emotional toll of treatment. She opens up about the heartbreak of being separated from her newborn, the guilt and grief that can come with being unwell as a mother, and the darkest moments that tested her strength. We explore how kidney failure changed her day to day life, her relationships, and her sense of self and what it looks like to rebuild hope after everything you thought your life would be is turned upside down.
Emma also shares the coping strategies that carried her through the unbearable days, the role her partner, family, and friends played in her survival, and what she wishes more people understood about cancer and chronic illness when you’re raising young children.
This episode is for anyone navigating illness, motherhood, or a season of life they never asked for and for those who need permission to take things one breath at a time.

I’m joined by the extraordinary Carol Lefevre. In a world where conversations about ageing so often centre on mid-life or decline, Carol offers something rare and powerful: an honest, hopeful exploration of later life, told from an older voice, for all generations.
Framed by the turning of the seasons in her small suburban garden, Bloomer documents the year Carol turned seventy and invites us to reconsider everything we think we know about ageing. In this conversation, Carol speaks openly about ageism and the harmful narratives we’ve been conditioned to accept, the grief and loneliness that can accompany later life, and the quiet resilience that grows alongside them. She reflects on losing her mother, living with a cancer diagnosis, and the shift that comes when you realise there is no longer a buffer between yourself and mortality, all with remarkable honesty and grace.
We explore the idea of “ongoingness”, that life doesn’t stop or shrink with age, but continues to unfold. Carol also shares insights from her conversations with people in their 70s, 80s and 90s, each offering wisdom on resilience, kindness, grief, nature, purpose, and embracing life as it is.
This episode is gentle, profound, and deeply grounding. It’s an invitation to slow down, challenge age-based stereotypes, and remember that becoming older does not mean the end of growth, it can be the beginning of a golden age.

I’m joined by the incredible Krystal, a woman whose strength, resilience, and honesty will stay with you long after the episode ends. Krystal’s journey with endometriosis began when she was just a young girl, facing years of pain that was dismissed, misunderstood, and overlooked. After finally receiving a diagnosis at 23, her life shifted in every way : emotionally, physically, and mentally.
Since then, Krystal has undergone eight excision surgeries, faced a premature emergency c-section, and made the heartbreaking decision to have a hysterectomy by the age of 28. Her story is one of unimaginable pain, but also of unimaginable courage. In this conversation, she opens up about navigating fertility challenges, the moment she met her miracle daughter Amelia, and how motherhood reframed her purpose, identity, and advocacy.
This episode is a testament to the strength found in vulnerability and the power of fighting for answers, for care, and for yourself!

In this soulful episode of Before You Bloom, Hayley sits down with beloved Play School presenter, actor, writer, and author Rachael Coopes to explore one of life’s most profound and challenging lessons : forgiveness.
Rachael’s new book, The Art of Forgiveness, is a comforting and practical guide that invites us to look at what it truly means to forgive: ourselves, others, and the stories we’ve carried for far too long. Rach unpacks how holding onto resentment affects our minds and bodies, what ancient wisdom can teach us about letting go, and why self-forgiveness is one of the most powerful (and often neglected) acts of healing.
Whether you’re navigating heartbreak, disappointment, or the struggle to release old wounds, this episode is a tender reminder that forgiveness isn’t about forgetting or reconcilling, it’s about freeing yourself to live with more peace, compassion, and grace.

Welcome back to Before You Bloom. In today’s episode, I’m joined by Chris, who lives with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a condition that disrupts how the brain sends and receives signals to the body. Often misunderstood and misdiagnosed, FND can impact every part of life, from physical movement to emotional wellbeing, yet it remains one of the least talked-about neurological conditions.
Chris bravely shares his story to shed light on what it’s really like to live with FND, the challenges, the misconceptions, and the small victories that come with navigating such a complex condition. We talk about the journey to diagnosis, the impact on identity and relationships, and the tools Chris uses to care for both his physical and mental health.
This conversation is an eye-opening reminder of the resilience it takes to live with an invisible illness and the importance of compassion, understanding, and advocacy.
Chris’s honesty and courage will leave you with a deeper awareness of FND and a greater appreciation for the power of sharing our stories!

This week on Before You Bloom, I’m joined by the incredible Lael Stone, educator, speaker, parenting counsellor, co-founder of Woodline Primary School, and author of the beautiful new book Own Your Story.
Lael has spent over two decades guiding people through emotional healing, with a particular focus on the unconscious imprints we carry from childhood and how they shape our lives as adults. In this conversation, we explore what it really means to “own your story,” how childhood imprints influence our behaviours and beliefs, and the signs that you might be living in response to old patterns without even realising it.
Together, we dive into practical tools for beginning the process of rewriting those old stories, the importance of self-compassion and forgiveness in healing, and how to take gentle first steps when you feel overwhelmed by your emotional history. Lael’s wisdom is rooted in compassion, connection, and the reminder that it is never too late to create meaningful change.

Out of this journey, she created Endo45, a science-backed app that’s now empowering thousands of people with endometriosis to track their health, understand their bodies, and reclaim their power.

In this episode of Before You Bloom, Hayley sits down with Danielle Donald, whose life changed in an instant after a devastating high speed car accident on March 27, 2018. Danielle and her one year old son were rushed to the Alfred Hospital, her son thankfully unharmed, but Danielle sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, including a left temporal haemorrhage and intraparenchymal haemorrhage.
She spent four months in a coma, endured post-traumatic amnesia, and faced a long road of recovery with permanent vision loss in her right eye. Despite these enormous challenges, Danielle has refused to let her injuries define her. From feeling invisible and misunderstood after her accident, to now chasing her dreams and competing in ICN bodybuilding competitions. Her journey is nothing short of inspiring.
Join us as Danielle opens up about waking from her coma, the reality of living with a traumatic brain injury, and how she’s turned unimaginable adversity into fuel for strength, resilience, and purpose.

I’m joined by Jenny Valentish, Walkley Award-nominated journalist and author of the new book The Introvert’s Guide to Leaving the House. Jenny speaks the language of the overthinker, the aloof, and the awkward, drawing from her own journey as a self-described reformed sociophobe.
Once terrified to speak into a microphone, Jenny has since transformed her relationship with social anxiety, taking bold leaps like bodybuilding, boxing in front of a crowd, and delivering confident keynote speeches. In our conversation, she shares what social anxiety looked like for her, the small steps that led to big changes, and the science backed strategies that can help anyone navigate social situations with more ease.
We dive into everything from the “spotlight effect” and overthinking, to imposter syndrome, control, and neurodivergence. Jenny also highlights the unexpected superpowers of introversion that deserve to be celebrated.
