In this episode, my best friend and I chat about her obsessive writing process, how she published her book, animal training and K-Pop bands. It's such a joy to chat with her and share her book!
Especially since I was the very first reader, and I told her that "It doesn't suck!" I promise that is a big understatement!

There is so much pressure these days to do it all. This is why Dianne decided to conduct the Mary experiment. She decided to focus on being, instead of doing. This book was so helpful to me! I am so excited to share our conversation with all of you.
Hard-working. Dependable. Consistent. Reliable.
These words appropriately describe Dianne Deaton Vielhuber. Raised on a small Wisconsin dairy farm, her parents instilled these and other traditional Midwest values. Dianne earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Agricultural Journalism. After working in communications and marketing within agriculture for many years, she felt called to serve overseas as a missionary. After a life-changing year teaching English at a university in Almaty, Kazakstan, Dianne expected to return to the business world. Rather, God called her into pastoral ministry. Dianne earned a Master of Divinity from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary while serving as a student pastor. Ordained an elder within The United Methodist Church, Dianne served five churches over a 20-year span.
These days, Dianne yearns for new words to describe her: Grounded in God. Relatable. Practical faith journey. Assisting others to journeying with God. She writes regularly for her blog, Simple Words of Faith, where she explores finding God in our ordinary lives.
Dianne journeys through her life with Hubby Rick. They have six grandchildren and Rick’s adult children. A self-proclaimed recovering over-doing Martha, Dianne incorporates Mary-like attitudes in her life through gardening, reading and exercising. They have remodeled a 110-year-old Victorian farmhouse in south-central Wisconsin.

About Natalie tells one woman’s heartbreaking story, one that is played out in homes across the country, and reveals the rollercoaster of emotions that loving an addict unearths. There is despair and joy; denial and acceptance; rage and tranquility. Christine’s reflections as she traces her daughter’s life are interspersed with Natalie’s compelling poems that tell the unvarnished truth of her side of this struggle: “I have handcuffs on/And no one can see them/My screams are so loud /Yet no one can hear ‘em”.
By sharing the difficult days of isolation, pain, and humiliation that being the parent of an addict can bring, Naman offers comfort and consolation to others in similar circumstances. Ultimately, About Natalie is a story of loving no matter what, keeping the faith, battling hard, and getting back on the right road.
In our conversation, Christine and I talk about addiction, family, her book, mental health, and more. As you listen, remember be kind and gentle because everyone you meet has a battle you know nothing about.

In Not Without Yesterday, we follow Claire from high school to marriage and career, to big changes and surprises. Today I chat with the author, Rachel Trusty, about how this book allowed her to process life events, how she writes full-time, and the power of her title.
Creating characters that reflect actual human thoughts and emotions is Rachel's favorite part of writing. Rachel wrote very little until her senior year of high school when she realized that she could fill a sheet of paper with her own words. When that discovery was made, the pretend and imaginary that lived inside her head could finally come out. Her first book was published in June 2017 when Rachel was only 18 years old. Since then, she has written contemporary and historical young adult fiction. Exploring the world around her, learning about cultures and places, people watching, and taking long drives brings new inspiration to her every day.

Today, we are chatting about the book, Teacher Dropout. It's a book that is brutally honest about the realities that students and teachers face in some schools. Lack of money, resources, time. The hardships of poverty, abuse, abandonment.

Today, I wanted to share one of my favorite books with you. Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith & Art by Madeleine L'Engle. It talks about time, the beauty of life, creating, and becoming who you are meant to be. This book is about the idea of what does it mean to be an artist? Any kind of artist: writer, musician, painter, illustrator. I think it goes even beyond that into what does it mean to be a human? Let's walk through these ideas together. I can't wait to share it with you!

There has always been something special about The Chronicles of Narnia. It's captured the imaginations of generations and inspired joy for many of us. But what if there was even more to the story than meets the eye? That's what we are talking about in this episode! I am joined by Dr. Michael Ward, author of The Narnia Code, Senior Research Fellow at Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford, and Professor of Apologetics at Houston Baptist University, Texas. We talk about the secret atmosphere and clues that Lewis left in Narnia, and how it can help show us more of who God is.
This was such a fun episode to record! Michael knows so much about Lewis, as he studied his writing for his PhD. He even spent a few years living in Lewis' house, the Kilns. His PhD was published as Planet Narnia, and it became a BBC documentary, The Narnia Code.
To find about more about Michael, visit his website and you can find his new book, After Humanity, here.
