In this episode, we explore Luke 18:9–19:44, where Jesus challenges pride and self-reliance, calling His followers to radical humility and deep trust in the Father. Through the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, He contrasts outward righteousness with a repentant heart. We see children lifted as models of kingdom faith, while a wealthy ruler walks away—unwilling to surrender all. Yet Jesus promises that sacrificial trust in Him will not go unrewarded.
As He foretells His death and heals a blind man, Jesus steadily turns His face toward Jerusalem. In Zacchaeus’ story, we witness salvation come to a home, underscoring His mission to seek and save the lost. Finally, Jesus weeps over the city that will reject Him, revealing the grief of a Messiah whose path to glory leads through rejection and sacrifice.

Jesus shows his authority over Satan and engages in conflict about the power of God with the Pharisees. Jesus calls out the Pharisees by reminding them of the wicked generation in the wilderness. This whole passage is undergirded by the Exodus and wilderness narratives in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. We cover demonology, how we deal with evil spirits, and we even got a surprise visit from Craig! The clear application of this passage is that what matters is what/who resides inside of you. Are you a representative of Jesus and his power, or are you displaying something outwardly that is not true of you on the inside.

Welcome back to the Mission Hills Bible Study Podcast! For our 11th season we are studying the "Travel Narrative" of Luke. That's Luke 9:51-19:44. It's such a cool, contained section that is unique to Luke. In Luke 9:51, Jesus "sets his face toward Jerusalem," and for the next 10 chapters, he travels toward the cross, under the shadow of his looming crucifixion. We talk though the structure of Luke-Acts: a geographical chiasm. Some big themes of Luke are the dichotomy of feasts, the danger of money, the upside down kingdom and great reversal, Jesus as savior/salvation, and caring for the outcasts and marginalized of society. Interesting things to pay attention to in Luke 1:1-9:50, include John the Baptist introducing Jesus's ministry, the Song of Mary, and Jesus' divine revelation by Peter and the Transfiguration.
