Ski Report for Breckenridge, Colorado
Daily Ski Conditions for Breckenridge, Colorado
Well, friends, it's the start of a brand new year and the conditions at Breckenridge are shaping up nicely for some solid early season skiing. Here's what's happening on the mountain right now.
Currently, the base is sitting at around 15 centimeters of snow with 45 centimeters up at the summit, which means you're looking at decent coverage on the upper terrain. The ski resort has 34 of 153 kilometers of slopes open right now, representing about 22 percent of the mountain's total terrain. You've got 23 of 35 lifts spinning, so access to the mountain is solid for this time of year. The artificial snow is helping fill in the gaps where natural snowfall has been lighter.
It's cold out there, folks. We're talking base temperatures around negative 6 to 4 degrees Celsius (roughly 21 to 39 degrees Fahrenheit), with the summit even chillier at negative 11 to negative 1 degrees Celsius (12 to 30 degrees). This is pure winter, so bundle up accordingly. The good news is there's plenty of sunshine, which means excellent visibility and that classic Colorado bluebird potential.
Looking ahead at the next few days, things get interesting. New snow is expected tomorrow and into Friday with around one inch accumulating, and that snow line should extend right down to resort level. This is exactly what you want to see heading into the weekend. Saturday and Sunday look drier with clearer skies, perfect for carving up freshies from the overnight dumps. Tuesday is another potential powder day with more snow in the forecast, and then there's another chance around January sixth.
The piste conditions are currently ranging from fresh powder to firm, icy surfaces depending on where you're riding. Off-piste is trickier right now since wind and sun can quickly create variable conditions, but with more snow on the way, those untouched stashes should improve significantly over the next week.
As you're planning your runs, keep in mind that January is the coldest month here in the Rockies, with an average of around 10 degrees Celsius (29.6 degrees Fahrenheit), but that doesn't stop the snow from falling. The mountain typically receives over 20 inches of powder during this month, so you're in prime conditions for chasing turns.
Dress in layers and don't underestimate that Colorado sun. With 300 days of annual sunshine at Breck, you'll catch rays even in winter. Bring your goggles and sunscreen because you can get seriously burned up there. Check the forecast before heading out and keep an eye on OpenSnow or OnTheSnow for real-time updates on the next powder push.
The season officially runs through May 10th, so you've got plenty of winter left to work with. Get after it.
